Phones you can't charge via USB

I can't stand this. By USB, I mean USB in a car or a generic wall charger. No, we have to use proprietary crap and spend a load more money. I can't charge my V3 or i607 in the car or through a generic charger because they want me to spend more money and have to carry more crap around.

I could carry one USB car charger, one wall USB charger, and a USB cord for each phone. No...I have to carry two wall chargers and two car chargers. And if I need to sync, I still have to bring along the USB cables.

yeah. I just got an LG 150, I need an USB cable, which is going to be very hard to find.

The V3 doesn't use miniUSB? I thought it did.

Your other model is aka the Blackjack, right? Yeah that one is proprietary.

My old V3 had a miniUSB connection. All of them including the V3, V3x, V3xx have minuUSB.

Yes, it is miniUSB. However, you cannot use a USB cable to charge it via a wall or a car charger. Something about a fourth wire.

Unfortunately, my new 8525 does the same thing, and worse, can't charge via all the Moto stuff.

I hate cell companies.

I don't know if I am getting what you are trying to say.

Yeah, I have read if it uses the same port for charging and sync cable, you can mod the wire to push voltage. I know you can do it with the e900. Not sure what other phones.

But if charge port and sync port are different, not possible.

That's not necessarily true on my end. Some manufacturers will let you, even two you mentioned. HTC and Motorola.

I interchanged an 8525 and a Moto charger(it was from the Ming though). Works fine. Also any miniUSB sync cable works as long as it's, I think, 5-pin. You can even use an MP3 sync cable if it's standard miniUSB(Creative, Insignia). I have when I once misplaced my sync cable.

I also used a Blackberry Pearl miniUSB charger on a Moto V3xx and vice versa.

You can also buy an aftermarket USB charger plug, then plug in the miniUSB cable to charge the phone from the wall or computer. As long as the connections are standard USB in the charger plug, and standard miniUSB on the phone, you may get away with using generic or aftermarket. At least in my experience.

I learned a lot about substituting cables and chargers when some idiot decided to steal my charger and cable from my 8125. I took a chance and discovered that I really didn't NEED to use HTC cables and chargers, but standard miniUSB would work in a pinch. And I realized that it's sometimes a rip-off to pay extra for the manufacturer's specific cables and charger IF they use standard connections. The exception would be if you're worried about your warranty, bad aftermarket parts could blow the phone.

As for the Blackjack, that I can agree on. I want the 2nd model and they say you can't even use the first model's cables and charger. That's even worse since one is just a simple upgrade of the older model. It's sleeker, but there's no good reason not to keep the connections the same IMO.

That's exactly what I'm referring to, and it hasn't worked for me. I suppose I will more closely examine my many miniUSB cables when I get back home.

Try a Blackberry Pearl or Motorola miniUSB charger if the generic one doesn't work. Those 2 worked on several phones with miniUSB ports.

Stupid N95-2 and N95-3 the n95-1 does but the newer variats don't WHY!

It seems like none of Nokia's newer high end phones supports USB charging. I would love to pick up the N95 or E51 but neither charges via USB, and they use proprietary connectors. What a drag, I have pleasure in carrying around extra USB cables with me. They should all use standard mini-USB, props to Motorola on that front.

The LG Voyager can be charged via USB. Unfortunately, they use a nonstandard connector on the phone side -- defeating the whole purpose of charging that way. If you are at work, a standard cable would allow you to recharge, with the nonstandard crap, however, you're screwed unless you carry around a cable. Stupid.

I'm sure this sh*t was decided by their marketing division, "let's make everybody spend $20 to buy a spare cable that should cost less than $5."

I just returned my brand new voyager to the store about an hour ago. Screw proprietary and locked down gadgets!

On the train it would be nice...

I think the key points to keep in check are voltage and current output, assuming the connector is matching.

The key concern is matching voltage. The current rating only indicates the maximum current the adapter can provide. Example: your phone requires 500mA at 5V. Any adapter that is rated at 5V can successfully charge your phone, but the proper adapter would be able to provide you 500mA.

In other words an adapter rated for 1A at 5V would work, 800mA at 5V, etc. (anything greater than or equal to your current requirement). You could also use a charger rated for 250mA at 5V, but your phone would take twice as long to charge. You may also end up killing the power adapter (or shortening its life) since the phone would want to draw more current than the adapter can provide.

However, you would not want to use another adapter rated for 500mA at some other voltage. Example: 500mA at 9V or 500mA at 3.2V ... that's not compatible with 500mA at 5V.
