Hey there guys,
Well I am looking for an iPhone and once found, I will unlock it and send it as a gift to a cousin in Russia. I was wondering if they will encounter any problems using the iPhone. Also, how will the internet work? Will they only be able to WiFi? If even that...Can I please get some details. Thanks in Advance and sorry if this was discussed, I searched and found nothing.

P.S. MAN! It's good posting on HoFo again, hadn't done it in ages!

if Russia uses GSM, you should be ok. Another thing I had to do when brought my iphone to Taiwan is to install iWorld under Tweak 1.1.2. It "fixes" the iphone to accept SIM from Taiwan. You might have to install that software, run it, and select the Russian SIM. good luck!

Finally, thanks a lot Grooby. Once the iPhone is unlocked I'll install iWorld. Anyone else care to chime in? Thanks again!

Russia uses GSM. Internet access through the phone network is entirely dependent on your cousin's provider in Russia. If he has a data plan, then he should be okay. It will probably be GPRS only, which is pretty slow, but better than nothing in a pinch. He will probably have to obtain the connection settings from his provider and put them into the phone in Settings / General / Network / EDGE. I would recommend getting the phone up to 1.1.2, because 1.1.1 has a bug whereby the EDGE settings are erased every time you reboot the phone. And you probably know this, but do NOT get a 1.1.2 OTB (out of the box) phone because those are not yet unlockable except with a TurboSIM or similar hardware hack.

iPhones.ru - is the best source of iphone-related information in Russia and in Russian, AFAIK. Not sure if you can read Russian but your cousin most likely would be able to, so whatever problem he/she encounters could probably be addressed and helped with on that site.

I confirm. It works without any problem. We have a lot of iPhones in Russia.

The problem will be with the lack of SilverCard in the Russian market. It is hardly possible to find one.
