Yes.

Put the ringtone in the \windows\ directory.

Go to: START - SETTINGS - SOUNDS & NOTIFICATIONS - NOTIFICATIONS TAB -

Now select the drop down for Messaging: New Text Message

Now go to the second box and use the drop down to select your tone.

Done.

You don't need to put it in the windows folder. In my sig there are several spots you can put your tones (ring and otherwise).
