CDMA vs. GSM Touch

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Any pro's or cons with each one?

My current provider Fido (rogers) is GSM and I haven't decided if i'm going to stay with them and just upgrade from my Dash (S621) to the Touch or if I'll go on my companies corporate plan with Bell which is CDMA.

I just want to make sure that the device will meet my needs.

I already know that only the GSM versions get the WIFI.

Thanks for the help in advance.

the data network. cdma is 3g, gsm version is 2g. cdma is much faster. I also heard the cdma version was larger, but probably not by much.

If you're going with the GSM version, may I suggest waiting for this here model, it supports north american 3G. (I'm sad with my s730)

hmm..ok. What about network clarity? I know, relative to the provider I'm talking about.

Anyone with experience with Bell vs. Telus then?

Oh, one thing I did find interesting was that each provider has a slighty different colored unit.
Rogers = grey
Telus = black
Bell = dark blue

Overall, if you're just comparing the Touch, get the CDMA version since it's faster (processor) plus the unlimited data. The only real reasons I would choose the GSM version would be because of GSM versatility (which is why I'm on GSM) and if you want wifi.

I prefer GSM network clarity, but it really ranges from device to device. For example, my 3G devices sound much better than the non-3G ones on GSM. You should just ask them to demo it and see for yourself.

There is 1 version that has DDR ram instead of normal RAM as a matter of fact.

At least according to the spec cheets on htc's site.

Not sure if its a typo but faster ram speed > all especially when dealing with bloatware like windows OS

Might wanna check into that to verify before making your choice

JWY - I've asked both Telus and Rogers for a demo and neither of them had a demo.

Boar - You wouldn't happen to know which version (CDMA or GSM) had the DDR ram would you?

I thought you would go look. was easy to find... but here...

listing
http://www.america.htc.com/products/touch.html

only one that mentions DDR ram is the rogers one...all the rest dont seem to have that in the specs.
http://www.america.htc.com/products...ures-specs.html

Now don't hold me to this btw... I said before and will say again - I do not know if it is true or not, but if I was going to buy a touch, I would be prone to verifying this before jumping in. (maybe a call to htc themselves to verify..)

DDR ram is king in this case... will shark the others out of the water. IF it is true only 1 version got it

a quick overclock (if you like danger of it blowing up in your pocket and taking your family jewels with it..) and it will rival an old 486

quake anyone?

EDIT: btw for the demo thing. you dont ask for a demo.. you say you wanna buy it buy want to see if your fingers can use it properly first. get them to get it out of the box for you, then go meh too fat for my fingers I'll think about it.

They dont want to demo things cuz of the holiday rush etc... they want in-sign-contract-out people. bend them to your will, not the other way around

The unlimited data with both Telus and Bell will make a huge difference to your user experience. I do not worry about my data usage at all, using every single app, website, downloading all attachements (even video clips), etc. I used 632mb last month..how much would that cost on Rogers? $65 if you could get the 1gb plan, but if you are one of their regular smartphone plans...$6000+??

The specs are one thing...but your cost to use the device to its full potential should be the most important.

Second that, I am on Rogers network and everytime I check my email on the go I have to be very cautious as to how much I could have incurred on my next bill. I only use MSN in places that offer free wifi...

It's a no brainer. The Bell version has unlimited email and browsing for $5 to $7/month depending on where you live in Canada (but don't use it as a modem for a laptop) while Roger's version would cost you thousands a month.

Plus a slower processor. Got rid of my GSM touch and got the bell touch. I could n't be happier that i got the CDMA touch. 3G,400Mhz cpu,$7 unlimited internet, etc. The size is not that much bigger to be honest i didn't really noticed the difference till i really looked at it. The GSM version didn't have 3g it had 2g,201Mhz cpu (have to overclock the damm thing and still is slow), has wifi but , honestly you can always have internet access buy just going on a $7 ul plan on bell as opposed to looking for a HS. The only thing good about the GSM version is it's usable any where in the world and.......they have cases for the GSM version of the touch NOT THE CDMA VERSION WHICH I AM MAD ABOUT lol. Alwell i got a silicone Touch skin for my CDMA touch and everything lines up in the front, sides, bottom and top but is off on the speaker and the camera mirror. CDMA is the way to go on this one. PLUS BELL AND TELUS has there touch for $0 on a 3yr which is an amazing deal on this pda phone. rogers still has there for $249.99 on a 3 yr. CDMA my friend. Faster,unlimited internet for $7 (bell),3G, GSM...Slower,expensive internet (unless you use wifi but then you have to find a HS),2G.

Thats the thing, I'm weary of the 3-year contract, especially with CDMA. I'm hoping to switch by the end of the month before Bell ditches the $7/month unlimited.

1-The $7/month is only $5/month here in the Maritimes and anything cheaper would pretty much have to be free;-)

2-CDMA is the only game in the Maritimes. Rogers' coverage here is a joke.

3-The current Bell plan is incredible. It's the first time ever in my life that I come across something for which I would be willing to pay 500% more and still be happy... This may not last very long...

4-The current plan is a preemptive strike in anticipation of Rogers' iPhone which will definitely appear sooner or later. The need for a product that offers unlimited web access will probably never disappear but it may cost more than $7 since Rogers will not offer anything as hot as the iPhone for less than what it costs in the US, i.e., $40 for the voice part of the plan, plus $20 for data, and, let's not forget the SAF. You probably won't get the rollover minutes and other goodies that ATT offers in the US either.

When all is said and done signing up for 2 or 3 years at $7/month is probably not all that bad.

Until recently I was using the HTC Apache 6700 with wifi and a sliding keyboard. After a few days with the Touch there is no going back. EVDO on this thing is actually faster than wifi. There is no annoying delay with the handshake, etc., and EVDO is simply available EVERYWHERE. There is no need to hunt down a Hot Spot. Only once I ran into a situation where EVDO was not available and I had to use the old 1X and that was certainly tolerable.

Make sure you use a decent soft keyboard and you'll be a happy camper, e.g.,:
