SE W580i - "Insert SmartChip for T-Mobile (US) SIM"

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

i bought a SE 580i from Cingular/AT&T and also received the unlock code from AT&T. i think it was unlocked successfully. i can see unlock symbol next to Network, Network subset, SP and Corporate in the Personalize menu.

when i insert a Tmobile SIM, it says 'Insert Smartchip'. i have also tried inserting another AT&T active SIM and get the same message. however, there was SIM which came with the phone and when i insert that SIM it says 'Inactive Smartchip'. It has a 3G on it. i noticed that the contact plate (golden area) of the Tmobile SIM and the SIM which came with the phone are of different size...

any idea what i am suppose to do ??? i initially thought that the phone might have been faulty but i cannot say now...

Well, the Inactive Smartchip means that that SIM card no longer contains your Subscriber Identity on it as it has been transferred to another SIM and/or has been deactivated.

As for the "Insert Smartchip" message, i have only gotten that message when my SIM has been damaged.

can you put the T Mob SIM in another phone and have it work fine? can you do the same with the active ATT SIM?

I don't know the answer but you need to start eliminating possibilities so you can narrow it down to the exact problem.

If both SIMs work in other phones, it kinda point to the phone being the issue.Put an active ATT sim in the 580 and see if that works

thanks for your replies.

i ended up calling SE support right after posting this thread. after explaining the lady the situation she wanted to ensure that i was properly inserting the SIM card. she walked me through the steps one by one ( i felt stupid since i knew that could not be the problem ). however, when she said 'insert the SIM till you hear a click' i was like i was not doing that...

after inserting the SIM properly (with the click), the phone worked fine. i was soooooooooooooo relieved since i had already requested a return shipping label from AT&T and was ready to send it back. this phone (white one) was actually for my gf. we have had it for about 3 weeks now but were not able to use. soo she was really happy about it.

Yeah, why SE can just make SIM trays or slide in slots like everyone else, is beyond me.
The whole "click" thing has stumped a few people on here before so don't feel bad.

omg, thanks, i just had this problem, i thought it was because i had to have a 3g sim chip, but thanks for helping me before i would have made a fool out of myself at the cingular store tomorrow.
