[TUTORIAL] Customize your phone with Far Manager

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: K Royal

We (HoFo and myself) are not responsible for any damage, hurt, or broken phone.
If you choose to follow this tutorial, is at your own risk. So be careful what you do.

People is always asking how to modd their phones. Improve sound and/or camera, better menus, sounds etc. There are pages specialized in this stuff, but most of them are filled with information and you get lost easily.

I will try to help doing this mini-tuto. We will use a software called "Far Manager ver. 1.07"
Far Manager has a DOS-like GUI, so it's very familiar to most of us.

FM has two windows. Left for mobile files, Right for PC files. You select PC files and copy them to mobile. Pretty simple.

Let's start:
-Do a full battery charge.
-Do your files and/or contacts backup.
-Removing SIM and/or memory stick is not necessary, but it you want to feel safe, do it.

1. You need to install USB flash drivers. There are two ways:
First, go to sonyericsson homepage, then Support/Update service and download its software (SEUS). Once installed, you will have USB flash drivers.
Second, follow this from The Griffin tutorial http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1267845 :

Go into the directory in which you extract the file "setool2lite", and go into the "drivers" folder, there you will find another folder called "usb_flash_driver". Go into that and launch the installer that is contained in it, proceed as you read, nothing major will happen this is just a SE USB Flash driver for your phone.

Once the installation is done proceed to the next step

Go back to the directory in which you extracted "setool2lite" and launch the application "setool2lt.exe"

2. Now we will need to know what CID and DB is our phone. With SETool opened, select your model, then click on "Identify". It will ask to connect the phone while pressing "C" button.
Turn off your phone, remove battery for two seconds, put it again, connect your USB cable to PC, then to your phone while pressing "C" button.

Check the line: FLASH CID detected:
That's your CID.
To know DB, check the next list:

Code:
DB1000: T610, T630, T300, T310, T306, T316, P800, P900, P910 DB2000 [Marita full]: K608, K600, M600, P990, V600, V800, W900 W950, Z800, Z1010 DB2010* [Marita compact]: D750, J300, K300, K310, K500, K510, K700, K750, S700, W300, W550, W600, W700, W800, W810, Z520, Z525, Z530, Z550 DB2011: K300 DB2012: K320, W200, W300, Z550, W810, K310, K510 DB2020: K610, K790, K800, V630, W830, W850, W710, W880, Z610, Z710, K810 PNX5230: Z310 DB3150: K850, Z750, W910, W960

We will work with DB2020 phones. You will notice these are the kinda new ones.
(Note: PNX5230 and DB3150 are not customizable at this time with any method)

3. Open Far Manager. You will see the first image in this post. Do Alt+F1 and a new menu will appear. If your phone is DB2020, select SEFP.
Another menu will appear. Select DCU-60, 921600 and your phone CID as it shows. In this case, as my K790 is CID52, I selected db2020 cid52.

4. Click "Enter the Matrix". It will ask you to connect it while pressing "C" button, like SETool lite. Do it. Do not forget to remove battery and reinsert it before doing this.

5. After this, you will see next screen, so you're ready to get into your phone system. Press FS and wait.

6. Next screen may take a while, so don't worry.

7. Now we are into system. At your right you'll see the directories. What is for each one? I post the routes where is located most stuff we use:

Quote:

Change menu icons:
tpa/preset/system/menu
Copy the icons with their menu.ml (overwrite original menu.ml)

Change Walkman skin:
tpa/system/multimedia/mp

Change Acoustics:
ifs\settings\acoustic
Improve phone sound.

Add clipart:
tpa/preset/system/multimedia/pe/fun layer
Add some new images to your photos.

Replace Cam Drivers:
ifs\settings\camera
Improve quality of photos and/or video.

Change layout:
tpa/system/layout/
Remove operator logo, bars, change hour and date ubication.

messageclick.mid

Change Shutdown Sound:
tpa\preset\system\settings
SHUTDOWN_SOUND_SEMC.mp3

Add Extra Flash Menus:
tpa\preset\system\desktop\flash

If your flash menus are blocked:
tpa/preset/custom/
Copy customize_upgrade.xml on this route.

Remove Locked Java Files:
tpa\preset\system\ams
tpa\preset\default\java

Remove Locked Music/Pictures:
tpa\user\audio
tpa\user\audio\Ringtones
tpa\user\image

Replace Audio Drivers:
ifs\settings\acoustic

Replace Cam Drivers:
ifs\settings\camera

Splash
tpa/preset/system/settings
Splash file is the one that appears right after turning on your phone (SE logo)
If you want to change it, your image must be .png and named SPLASH with no extension.

tpa/preset/system/settings/SHUTDOWN_IMAGE_SEMC
Image that appear on Shutdown. It's a GIF, so upload it but without extension and with same name as shown

tpa/preset/system/settings/STARTUP_IMAGE_SEMC
Same, but in Startup.

a) To expand SMS capacity:

1. Go to /ifs/settings/messaging/
2. Select pref_store.txt and press F4 (edit)
3. Change "/smsdata" for "/tpa"
4. Save changes
5. Exit Far pressing " .. " until "Do you wish to shutdown CSFSloader". Then click Yes
6. Remove battery, reinsert it and turn on your phone

b) Remove camera sound::
Go to tpa/preset/system/sound and delete camerashutter.3gp file
and to delete autofocus sound delete camerafocus.3gp file.

c) Chaneg default SMS sounds:
tpa/preset/system/sound
Delete files and upload the new ones in same format and name. (messagealert1,messagealert2....)

d) Delete low battery sound:
Go to tpa/preset/system/sound/lowbattery.mid y substitute the file with same name, but with no size (empty, 0 kb).

e) Change shutdown sound:
Go to tpa/preset/system/settings
Copy any mp3 as SHUTDOWN_SOUND_SEMC.mp3

f) Increase MMS size:
This size is regulated by carrier.
Edit this file: tpa/preset/custom/customize.xml
Add this on it
<mms>
<message-max-size>4000</message-max-size>
</mms>
Then copy it again in same route and do a Master Reset.

g) Change message sent sound:
Name a .mid of your choice as notification.mid and copy it to: tpa/preset/system/sound

To copy your files you must find them on right side, then select with right-click (yellow) and transfer them to left side on the ubication you choose.

You can't backup files to your PC in DB2020, so you will need to find them while you look for modds.
There are many of them, so I won't post because everyone has their needs.
You can look in Topsony, Se-nse, Esato, Clubsonyericsson, just to name a few ones.

All of this is for DB2020 phones. If your model is another db, or if it fails to connect, choose "just da flasher" instead SEFP (right after Alt+F1). It's similar to connect, so you won't find any problems. If so, we are here to help.

Remember:
After every unplug, remove battery two seconds then reinsert it. If not, you phone won't start or won't be recognized by PC.

I don't like to provide direct links, so I will show you where are located and what files to download.
Go to 4shared.com
Install this:
keyword: Far Manager
file: Far Manager - db2020 supported.rar

With this file, open it, extract "jdflasher" folder, and copy it to Plugins folder in the first Far Manager you installed above.
keyword: JDflasher
file: far_manager_v1.7_jdflasher.rar

Any question or comment is well received.
Just read carefully first.

Good luck!

Great post K Royal, thanks!

I have a question, maybe it's a stupid question, but I'm still confused about something. I've never done this before and I read some other tutorials, is it true we must "emulate" a fake firmware to get into the FS and then we must reflash the firmware at the end after we make all the changes in the FS? Is it possible to just edit/change things in the FS without reflashing the phone? Cause I'd like to keep the firmware I flashed with SEUS. I read through your tutorial, it doesn't seem like it needs to fake a flash process?

Posted by: K Royal

You don't need to flash in order to get into it, or "main fake"
It was in old times.

Alright, that's awesome, thanks!

There are some annoying locked games files that I'd like to get rid of, cause they came with the phone and they're all trial versions I will follow your tutorial, thanks again.

Posted by: valerossi

By the way, what is the JDflasher for? Do I need it, my phone is K810i.

Thanks.

Posted by: K Royal

You don't need it. K810 is db2020 so SEFP will work.
JDflasher is another plugin for Far Manager used when SEFP fails.

Posted by: K Royal

(sorry for double posting)

Here you have original files for several models. Download the one you want and, following the routes I posted above, look for them.

Code:
http://sek750.extra.hu/letoltes/?path=./Directory%20Files/

I think you forgot to mention in your tutorial that we need to download the SEFP plugin...

Anyway, I got it working, and I removed those useless trial version games...

Thanks again...

By the way, I went into the "tpa\preset\system\ams" folder, this is where those games files are located. There are also some strange/weird coded files in there, but I didn't want to touch any of them.

Posted by: K Royal

Far Manager - db2020 supported.rar
This file has the SEFP included.

If you don't know what files are you seeing, don't touch them. That's the first cause to have a dead phone.

oops... sorry missed the filename you posted, I downloaded FM from the original creator's site...

Posted by: Tomcat76

Hey is there a DB for the W580i? Or do I have to use JDflasher?

Posted by: K Royal

W580 is db2020. Use sefp.

Posted by: Tomcat76

oh thank you thank you K Royal. Just got my phone from FedEx about 2 hours ago so i'm messing with it now.

Posted by: denyfate

If your flash menus are blocked:
tpa/preset/custom/
Copy customize_upgrade.xml on this route.

hey, just wanted to ask where can i find this customize_upgrade.xml
i searched the forum with "w580 flash menu" with no luck

thx

Posted by: denyfate

nvm i googled it and found it off some spanish site (thank god to google translator)
for ne one interested... u copy paste this into a notepad

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> [/font] <customization>
<flash-desktop> <settings reg-path="/apps/flash-desktop">
<enabled>true</enabled> </settings> </flash-desktop> <mmi> <settings>
<enable-flash-desktop>true</enable-flash-desktop> </settings> </mmi>
</customization>

then u change the name, including extension, to customize_upgrade.xml =)

Posted by: K Royal

For all those who want to activate Flash themes, here is the customize_upgrade.xml

How to upload it? Read the first post.

Code:
http://www.4shared.com/file/33588352/daab46a6/customize_upgrade.html

I cant wait for some one to find a way to backup from the phone...

Sweet tutorial! I think its the first time iv seen it on HOFO in such a sweet and simple form...

Posted by: Anthony2816

K Royal posted this link for customize_upgrade.xml:

http://www.4shared.com/file/3358835...ze_upgrade.html

However, I installed it in tpa/preset/custom/ , and added a couple of flash menus into tpa\preset\system\desktop\flash , but when I reboot my phone, so far I haven't found a way to enable or choose the flash menus. Anyone know how?

K Royal, I installed the customize_upgrade.xml file in tpa/preset/custom/ , and added a couple of flash menus into tpa\preset\system\desktop\flash , but when I reboot my phone, so far I haven't found a way to enable or choose the flash menus. Anyone know how?

Posted by: K Royal

Did you put the each theme corresponding to each flash menu?
I mean, every flash menu needs its theme to activate.

Ah, no. This is all new to me. Are there any tutorials to explain what you're talking about?

Posted by: K Royal

No problem. Just install the flash menus you want, but look where you downloaded those menus, there must be themes to activate them. They are packed together.

Posted by: mzkaye729

Hi there. Is there any way to extract the original Bluetooth icons off the K800i phone using FAR Manager ? It wasnt stated in your tutorial.. or maybe I missed it ?

Posted by: K Royal

Nearly impossible. For what I understand, these icons are on MAIN, and in hexadecimal, so if you want to extract them, you must be familiar with this term and, most important, where are they located in code.

Posted by: mzkaye729

Oh no... Got my hopes up for nothing. I really liked the K800i Bluetooth icons and I wanted to put it into my iPhone Thank you for your help though, K Royal.

Posted by: MP

I think it is possible. I have not tried it yet but will soon...
Looks like a long process, but the phone thinks it is upgrading something and copies those files as "backups" to usb/other/

http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?showtopic=17170

Posted by: mzkaye729

Hey matts. If it's successful, please kindly send to me the Bluetooth icons through PM. I dont have my K800i anymore since I switched to the iPhone so I have no way of testing. Thanks

Posted by: binqker

Alright.. I believe when I copy the files.. for some reason when I open it.. theres nothing there? whats with that? any help? thanks.

Indeed 0kb's.

Posted by: K Royal

I think you say from phone to PC.
In the tutorial is written: You can't backup files to PC.

You cant just copy from phone to computer with DB2020 (its a 1 way road).
You would have to do this http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?showtopic=17170
and trick the phone into thinking it s upgrading something, it then moves the files you select to the directory you list in the xml generator.

I have not tried it, but looks like other have hand success...

what model of phone? Does it support flash themes?

If so then... this copied from somthing old...

====== Flash Menus ====== **** NOTE that there are 2 steps to this, and 2 different folders.

Navigate to \FS\tpa\preset\system\desktop\flash on the left side.
Navigate to your SWF on the right side.
Highlight "DisableFlashDesktop" on the left side using the right mouse button, and press F8 to delete it.
then copy .SWF to that dir on phone

**** The following part is only if you want to store the flash themes in the phone's memory. You can skip this part and copy them over to your Memory Stick later, or copy them using bluetooth, etc. The .THM theme files do not need to be stored in a particular place, as long as they are accessible from the phone. ****

Navigate to \FS\usb\theme on the left side.
Navigate to x:\wherver you have your .thm files on the right side.
Highlight on the right side using the right mouse button, and press F5 to copy them to the phone.

i see no "DisableFlashDesktop" on the left side.... Btw i have a se w580 Att but unbranded with stool

Posted by: MP

that was from an old tutorial...

if you debranded it it should have some flash themes on it.
Does it?

what firmware, FS, and cust did you flash it with?

Posted by: wheresmy

it does have some flash themes on it, i want to add some more flash themes. is that possible?
# Sony Ericsson W580i FS
# Sony Ericsson W580i MAIN
# Sony Ericsson CID52 ASIA Customisation
it was all from this http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1267845

Posted by: wheresmy

the following i found from topsony forum. i was wondering will this method work ?

"Hello Restivo,

I also debranded my phone with WoTan.

To Upload files to your w580i

Download XS++ 1.68
Place all the flash files (.swf) in the following path (Where your XS++ executable is located):
files_to_upload\tpa\preset\system\desktop\flash
Start XS++
Click on connect and connect your phone
Click on Customize
Go to Settings and click on BreakXS
Go to FSX and click on Start FSX.
Wait a couple of minutes and you're done.

Now you will need themes to use the flash files you've just uploaded.

Download and install TUG ZIP TUGZip - The Free Archiving Utility
Find a theme that you want to modify to use a flash menu on.
rename the file from XXXX.THM to XXXX.tar
Extract the files into a subfolder
Locate the .xml file
edit the file in notepad.
Locate the line: Sony_Ericsson_theme version="4.1"
Enter this after the line:
<Desktop_style Type="File" Source="XXXX.swf"/> where XXXX.swf is the name of the flash theme you wish to use.
Save and exit from notepad.
Highlight all the files you've extracted and right click on a file and click on add to archive.
Select the TAR format and zip the files.
Rename the zipped file from XXXX.TAR to XXXX.THM
Upload the THM to your phone.

Enjoy your new flash theme."

Posted by: MP

I like to use far.

All you should have to do is put the swf's and thrm's and the phone should be good to go.

Posted by: binqker

Hey Matts,

Did you ever changed the font text for your phone?

Posted by: wheresmy

Edit: i finally got the flash themes working. i fixed it by copying and pasting the themes from the computer to the phone without the far manager. since i alrdy put the swf file in there, its working

Posted by: MP

were they in the wrong directory?

Posted by: wheresmy

hm the swf files were put in the right directory through far manager along with the thm files. that didnt work so i tried putting the thm files directly into themes folder of the phone by copying and pasting without the far manager which is going to my computer and then the phone hard drive. i deleted the thm files in the tpa -> preset -> system -> desktop -> flash but left the swf files. now its working. ^^ thanks for your help guys and your work

Posted by: MP

ya the .thm files don't go in the same directory!

swf's go here
\FS\tpa\preset\system\desktop\flash

thm's go here
\FS\usb\theme

Posted by: ThorBlaze Dragon

I got the latest Far Manager, and followed the first post
but Far doesn't see my K790a
did I do something wrong?!

Posted by: K Royal

If you have USB flash drives, and you selected the options as it says in Far, you shouldn't have problems. You have more phones to try, or did you have success with others?

Posted by: MP

I have noticed that AVG thinks there is a virus in the SEFP plugin for far. When that happens SEFP will not work.

I started using JDFlasher because of this (I cant figure out how to disable avg from scanning that file - Theres really no virus)

Posted by: ThorBlaze Dragon

collected SEFP and all updates
now Far can open up my K790a, and copied own_custpack
but I don't see much improvement of earpiece

Posted by: v2kai

No problem at all, at least for me. It doesn't matter.

Posted by: v2kai

cool thanks you were right

Posted by: quebert

my AVG was detecting a virus in the patch file, need to run it because it's telling me I don't have a service cable. I disabled AVG but when I try to run the patch it says it's a bad file and won't run. Any ideas?

thanks

Posted by: MP

Im a computer guy and I have yet to get those files to work with AVG even on the computer (AVG never fully disables I guess)...

I started using JDFlasher plugin vs sefp - It works just as good

glad I'm not the only one, downloaded JDFlasher and going to give it a shot.

FAR works beautifully, no brute forcing needed, was able to add flash menus, new startup image, start sounds, acoustic drivers and a few other things. Pretty easy once I started to figure out the file structure. I don't think I could have handled things in the days when your only option was to brute force your way in, I let it run for 2 hours this morning before I gave up, Luckily I figured out the FAR method.

How long is a while? like 5 minutes or 20-30+? it seems like it just stops and hangs at that screen at 100%, been waiting 20-30+

Posted by: breathe

btw I never get to where it says GDFS sever startup: cmd: 89 04

it hangs where it says:
Filesystem server startup: cmd: 89 03

Posted by: MP

are you selecting a phone model in jdflasher? You should be using the one that just says DB2020

Posted by: breathe

Ive tried following the instuctions here exactly, as well as trying jdflasher and selecting just db2020...still nothing..just hangs. fyi same kinda thing happens in XS++

Posted by: breathe

well, looks like this was a problem with my computer or vista...loaded it up on the laptop and it worked flawlessly

Posted by: breathe

now the problem exists on 3 different computers in the house...i was going to try replacing the speakerphone driver as it stopped working (speaker still works for ringtones, music, etc, just not the speakerphone) but now it just hangs at the same spot on every computer....

Posted by: breathe

so...nobody knows how to correct this?

does the phone work?

Posted by: silvershadow

breathe, seems ur phone is having the same connection problems as me. its seems when u try to mod one phone alot of times without giving it a long rest, it tends to not want to connect. however, if u keep trying about 40 times one after the other, it eventually connects.

Does it connect properly? i dont know...

Posted by: MP

I think they are busted. Try connecting another phone.

Posted by: breathe

the phone works great, so im not sure how it can be broken. it connects correctly, just hangs when it tries accessing the file system. i have only gotten this to work once.

Posted by: MP

Im surprised that it will not work. Im not sure how else we can help.
Try plugging in another "similar" phone and see if you can get into that one. If you can its the phone , if you cant its some kind of configuration on the computer.

Try plugging in another "similar" phone and see if you can get into that one. If you can its the phone , if you cant its some kind of configuration on the computer.

You said you did it once, so we can discard usbflash drivers.
Try SETool lite and do Identify. Or XS++.

Also, did you try connecting to PCsuite or MyPhoneExplorer?

PC suite recognizes the phone..XS++ hangs at the same place as far manager...SETool identifies the phone just fine

I dunno what else to try. Maybe SEUS.

does the phone have to be unlocked and/or debranded in order to do this?

delete the camera shutter sound files from within far (dont forget the focus one too)

Posted by: The0ry

Yeah, I did that, but I'm sorta picky about the focus sound >___<.

I flashed my K800i and my friends K790a...and I can't get rid of the shutter sound from flashing.

My friend's K800i that I tried flashing with the same FW had shutter sound disabled...

maybe when the phone was in silent mode

Posted by: The0ry

Yeah I tried all three in silent mode.

On my K750i, I just customized the file and it worked flawlessly in silent mode.

Oh well...I guess I'm fine with this.

my far manager freezes when i try to connect with ofs. the k810 freezes when it says "starting fs manager" and the error is

SetDirectory(setdir(setmode(doscript(activateloade r(get89data(IBusb::getblock(time exceed)))))))

Question:

Quote:

I have a W850i, flashed etc. but "SEFP" isn't appearing in Far Manager. Saying this, I'm using the most recent version but I don't know what I'm doing once I open the program. Is there a specific way to connect the phone or what?

did you read the tutorial ?

did you press F11?
