Hey I just got the iPhone! I canceled my Verizon Account, because I was tired of them, (hope it wasn't a mistake.) I haven't opened the box yet, just wondering can I port my number from Verizon to at&t at the same time I am activating the phone through iTunes? Tried to look at other threats for the answer, hope I didn't overlook it.

When you activate the iphone through iTunes it should have an option to port your number.

well, if you truly canceled your Verizon acct and yet want to port that number to your iphone, then you did make a mistake. You cannot port a number once that account has been closed. The proper procedure is to leave your old account activate, request the port with your new carrier and the new carrier grabs the old number and closes the old account for you....

Yeah, what he said. If you canceled the VZW account you can no longer port that number, it's been released back into the pool for reuse.

Welcome to the club. I left Verizon for my iPhone as well

Yup, if you cancelled your account first, your number is lost. You can't get it back.

Your only chance is to call Verizon customer service, and see if they will re-activate your phone, and then do the port through iTunes.

But if he reactivates won't they want him to commit to a new contract?

Probably, but when you sign a new contract, you're supposed to have some time (14 or 30 days, I forget which it is on Verizon) to change your mind, right? You could just... be very indecisive that day
