SE W810i + ATTWS Blue: having trouble sending text messages!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a new unlocked and unbranded SE W810i, and I've been having intermittent problems sending text messages. I've been trying to see if the settings are correct - you would think that they would be if it worked fine on my other phone?

So far, this is what I found on the AT&T website:
Make sure that the number of your service center is set. The number is supplied by your service provider and is usually saved on the SmartChip or you can add the number yourself.
To set a service center number
1>Messaging>Settings>Text Message>Service Center.
If the service center number is saved on the SmartChip it is shown in the list.
2 If there is no number in the list>New ServiceCenter and enter the number, including the international “+” sign and country/region code>Save.

Is the "SmartChip" the same as the SIM card???

The number I have for the Service Center is +1 970 376 9301. I have not received any other number, and AT&T has been refusing to give me any service because they're pissed I didn't buy the phone from them. They're saying they cannot offer me any support.

I have no idea if the fact that I have an old ATTWS Blue SIM means I need to adjust settings accordingly?

I also really can't understand why at times I have NO trouble sending text messages, and sometimes they fail no matter what I do... (with full bars).

Try +13123149810 as your Service Center Number. (See if that makes any difference.)

Also try www.wireless.att.com/device-support and check out what they have in the settings for the w300i. That one should be close enough to yours for it to allow you to get yours configured properly.

Aaaargh! Tried that other number. It doesn't work. The number I already had appears to be the number for ATTWS users, but obviously that doesn't work either.

They actually have a page for the 810i. Support pages for both phones say the following:
Existing and New AT&T wireless services customers

The common message center number provisioned on all AT&T SIM cards nationally is +13123149810. Multiple Message Center Numbers are available for each region; however, each will function the same regardless of what is chosen. If there are problems using the national message center number, please contact AT&T Customer Service for wireless customers for an alternate number.

Former AT&T Wireless Customers

All former AT&T Wireless Customers use +19703769301 nationally.

Hmmmm, maybe you might wanna go to the AT&T forum and post a help topic in the approprate subforum. You might get a better answer there.

Thanks! I'll post back if I find out anything helpful.

Meanwhile, if anyone else has any ideas....?

Happy holidays!

Someone on the AT&T forum suggested the following:
Regarding the settings, besides the message center number (you are using the correct one for a "Blue" SIM) the other thing to check is that your phone is set to use GSM for SMS (not GPRS). On my W580i it is in "settings/connectivity/data communication/SMS access". It should be set to "circuit switched".

This solved the problem. Yay!

For anyone else dealing with this: this is not the "settings" under "messaging". It's the one under the main settings menu. Then scroll over to the right for the header "connectivity".

I tried making sure that the "settings/conectivity/data communication/SMS access" is on circuit switched & have the correct call center number for SMS, but still nothing.

HELP anyone? I can get MEdia Net access through my browser no problem, can make/receive calls & get my voice mail...

TIA

stupid question, but you do have text messaging on your account? Can you receive them? How about sending MMS when you cant sent text?

-- May be a work around if you can send mms -- anything under a certain size in MMS is treated as a TXT in billing.

Go figure...when I called them yesterday (after I posted), I found out from the rep that there were internal reports of incidents of SMS not working in TN, NC, SC & GA.

By 12:30PM yesterday things were fine...

What a coincidence...the SMS died just after I finished flashing my phone from the AT&T bloat-ware to the original SE W580i posted in this fine forum!

I <3 HoFo...making a novice modder into a pro someday...
