Data plan questions - iphone vs other - Can I???

Ok, I am apparently retarded.
I was on the phone with an AT&T rep last week and was contemplating swapping my data plan from the Iphone (that I have pretty much decided to sell) to the Tilt that I bought.
I only was going to swap packages because I have been told stories of AT&T charging people alacarte for their data while on on iphone plan if anything other than an iphone was used for the data. Ie, me using my tilt.

The rep told me that there is a package for 29.99 for unlimited data and 1500 txt msg for the tilt.

I couldn't switch because I was on the tilt and couldnt give the EMI.. so when I wrote it all down and called back, I was informed that 40.00 was the amount of the package.

I would pay the extra 10.00 a month over the 20.00 Iphone package (if there is a 29.99 package) to be able to use the mms features however, I would be ok with keeping the 20.00 iphone package if I can get away with it.

What gives?

Questions;
1) is it true that AT&T will charge me for using the tilt on the iphone package?
I logged onto my account and it showed the tilt as my phone instead of the iphone. It still had the iphone data package however.
I simply changed it back to iphone.
2) is there a 29.99 plan with 1500 txt and vid/pic msg?

I would appreciate any advice and/or stories/experiences from you guys.

Thanks!

Don

I'm not too sure about the packages, but changing your phone back on OLAM won't matter because eventually it'll check again and show your tilt again.

Either way, I wouldn't think unlimited data should be different based on phone choice, but then again, ATT never surprises me anymore.

Can anyone else chime in on this?

Isn't there a way where you can check your iemi number while on the phone like * something? This should have been posted in the att forum you prob would get more help.

I can't answer the direct question, but I can say that I use an N95-3 with my BlackBerry plan and to date (about 3 months) haven't been charged a la carte, even though whenever the SIM is inside the N95-3, I'm using 3G (which BlackBerry doesn't support). It could be because the BB plan is $40/month. That said, AT&T has a MediaMax plan for smartphones that is $20/month for unlimited data, 200 SMS and MMS (basically the same as the iPhone plan, except with MMS provisioning).

AT&T tries to sell data plans for $30 or even $40 based on whether the phone has a QWERTY keyboard (why that makes a difference is beyond me - apparently Apple was able to convince them not to do the same to the iPhone, even though it technically has a QWERTY keyboard). For some reason, the presence of a keyboard is how they distinguish smartphones from PDAs, and PDA plans run $10 more than smartphone plans.

To me, all these articles about how much data iPhone owners use serves to undermine AT&T's argument for tiered pricing on unlimited data plans (combined with the fact that none of the other national carriers use tiered pricing for data, except Verizon and Sprint charge more if you intend to tether a PC). They don't have much choice with BB since they pay licensing fees to RIM (although T-Mobile charges $10 less), but there is really no valid reason why a Tilt user should be paying $10 more for unlimited data than an iPhone user, particularly since AT&T doesn't have a revenue sharing arrangement with HTC.

Mini-rant over. The networks can tell what phone you are accessing their network with from the IMEI. In some of my correspondence with both AT&T and T-Mobile CSR, they noticed that I have been using an N95, and the T-Mobile rep was somewhat surprised to see the iPhone (obviously unlocked) show up on my call records. My advice is to talk to a supervisor in CSR, and explain what you want to do. For that matter, if you are keeping your iPhone, just explain that you want to make sure the SIM will work on the Tilt, and see if they'll keep you on the same plan.
