Keyboard for touch disapearing in text message entry

When I am viewing all of my text messages in the inbox and I click on the touch keypad entry mode it has a full sized keyboard that I love. When I go to actually reply to a text message that keyboard is transformed into a keyboard with three letters to a button... How do I get back the individual letter keyboard.
