No data package - worth it?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,
I just ordered a Blackjack for myself. I am not a business user, I just wanted the qwerty keyboard for text messaging and I thought the design was really slick.
I decided not to add a data package, as I do not plan on using GPS, internet, etc. I usually do not even download ringtones or anything like that.
Was getting the BlackJack worth it?
Also, is there a way to turn off internet/etc features on the BlackJack so that I am not charged for data?
Let me know thank you.

To block data, hange the GPRS settings so that the access point is gibberish, changing one character is enough. (settings - connections - GPRS)

i.e. change wap.cingular to wap.cingularx, easy to remember so you can change it back should you ever have a need.

I think its 'worth it' I have a BJII with no data package and although I do sometimes wish I had one I can't justify spending that kind of money on it. ATT does not have a phone with a qwerty keyboard that isnt a smartphone/pda and the BJ/BJII is the smallest smartphone/pda with qwerty that I know of(on Att). Are you using all of its capabilities, no, but as long as it does what you want who cares?

heck ya the blackjack ii was worth it, for the keyboard and gps alone. you can install tomtom (at cost) and have gps functionality without the internet if u wish to use GPS.

i jsut got mine and is it true i can only go as low as 40 bucks a month for internet?! or can i use one of the media net bundles? ps im new to modding samsungs been around for the motos and psp, that was my quick intro

pda plan minimum is 40, minimum for regular phone unlimited is 20, which will still work fine on a pda, but is forbidden.

There is a PDA Personal for $29.99 which gives you twenty megabytes of data per month.

Well I'm using my sim card from my iPhone which has the data. You don't necessarily need to get the PDA plans, wink wink. Get a media max 200 for 19.99 and you can have unlimited data + 200 messages.

For just texting I would have opted for the pantech duo.

Hm, thanks for the responses guys.
I got the BlackJack II because I've been eye-ing a friend's BlackJack for a while with a lot of interest.

Do not turn off data completely with Customer Service or you cannot order a messaging package. Also be careful of clicking on programs or links which use the Internet. Your phone will connect whether the Access Point Name is correct or not. This will be at pay per use. Since Windows Mobile programs do not close, you could be connected for weeks refreshing a web page.

AT&T does not consider the ROKR E6 a PDA since it does not have an external QWERTY keyboard. Touchscreens do not count. You can use any of the MEdia Max bundles on it. You cannot hide a phone from the carrier. The phone announces itself each time you connect.

I don't believe that to be correct (that it will connect even if you fudged the apn)

If it does, you either changed the wrong setting, or the phone ignored you and used the right APN anyway.. afaik the only way you're getting data without an APN is through CSD.. and all of 5 people probably still have that on their acct.

Do you guys think a BlackJack II or Blackberry Curve is better for just text messaging?

Try it and see for yourself. It will not connect with a dedicated MEdia Net button but it will go directly to a URL not reached by the Cingular proxy. How do you think that Blackberries connect?

Just tried it, worked as I expected.

Seeing as how you need the blackberry plan to get network access at all on a blackberry, my guess is the APN is hard coded in, or the system handles bb accounts in a different way.. reference this post, for example: http://howardforums.com/showpost.ph...2&postcount=151

I've never owned a bb, so I could be completely off the mark. However other phones certainly don't behave that way.

Having the BJ II and having had the curve, I felt the curve was better for text messaging, especially out the box. Threaded SMS is the best, in which the Curve has out the box.

Can someone confirm this issue. I would like to sent text and picture, but would like to block all internet traffic so i am not billed. Is it as simple as changing the setting as mentioned above?

Currently I have two options ATT IMS and MediaNet.. What does what?is one for text and one for pictures? what do i need to change to block anything I wlil be billed extra for (i have free mobile to mobile text and pictures plan @ $9.99..

Also under these settings it has several options: The Internet, Secure WAP Network, WAP Network, Work..

can someone explain these settings as well as the other issue?

Thanks,

BIll

Bump, can any one answer way11's questions? ^

Please and thank you!

I believe if all Internet traffic is stopped, regardless of the method, MMS will quit working as well. As I see it, even if I accidentally download data on pay-per-use, it's only $0.01 per kB. My wife had some data usage on her line last month and it totaled a whopping $0.03. It only gets expensive if you start surfing, or use an online mapping service.

I have the Blackjack II. With some surfing I found a nice little program that lets you turn the data on and off. So I leave mine off and send text messages all the time (I have the unlimited text and no data plan). Then when I need to send data (like looking at Google maps), I just turn the data settings back on, surf the web, then turn them back off when I'm done. I have to pay for the amount I surfed, but at least I control it, and I don't accidentally send data when I don’t' want to.

No Data program

Or do a google search for this program.... nodata.cab
