Hey all... long time lurker, first time poster.

Just returned my non-activated Samsung A460 to BB since my wife gets a 25% off deal through work. She has also been quite generous and allowed me to upgrade to either a A500 or a 8100!! I think the decision has been made and Ill be buying the 8100 but I have a few questions for the folks that really know what their talking about (not me...)

I know this is a new phone and accessories are a bit light still... but will 5100 or 5300 accessories work with it? I have an iPaq 3955 and would like to connect the devices. On a related note do I have to use the Vision minutes or plan or can I just call my ISP with my phone/CF card modem combo?

Saw the post on holsters... but the St Louis Sprint store(s) dont seem to have any. I found one on line for the 5300 do you think it will fit? The 8100 might be a bit thick....

Games, ringers and screen savers: are these a monthly cost or a one time fee? Any of this stuff come with the phone?

Ill leave it at that!

Thanks!!

Mike

as far as accessories go the 8100 will work with accessories that fit the 4900 and te 5300. to use ur phone as a modem is against the terms of service and can actually get ur account closed or get excess charges for usage. as far as the holster goes the 5300 is bigger than the 8100 so the holster for the 5300 wont fit for the 8100. as a far as games and ringers if u get an unlimited vision plan ur all set and can download anytime of the day without taking from ur minutes. phone comes with pacman no screensavers or animations. hope i answered them all.

Thanks Silentone! Yes you answered everything... checks in the mail!

Against terms of service ehh.... hmmm. Not a very friendly thing now is it? Understand they want everyone to use their "AOLesque" internet but were all not soccer moms that require a dumbed down version.

No offense to soccer moms intended, implied, inferred.

1) Although some fine print in the Terms Of Service rules out modem-style usage, most Sprint reps continue to assure us that light-to-moderate modem-style usage will be tolerated. In any case, Sprint's only recourse is suspension or termination of your account, as far as I know. Sprint cannot simply make up an outrageous fee or rate that is not documented in the service agreement. A couple of new subscribers have reported getting a temporary suspension for immediate heavy downloading (e.g., 180MB in the first 6 days of service). Other subscribers have reported getting charged for data, but such cases have always turned out to be billing errors.

2) Ringers, screensavers, and games are available for free download at various Internet sites and cost nothing (not even minutes) beyond your regular monthly Unlimited Vision fee.

One other thing you should know is that there are no serial cables available for any of the phones you mentioned (Sanyo 8100/5300/4900, Samsung A500). The only type of communication their data ports are capable of is USB (I think). This is pretty much the case with all of the newer phones, and it's a problem because in order to connect directly to your iPaq, you'll need a serial cable.

As lgmayka said, while it also would technically violate the terms of your Vision contract, the consensus so far has been that you probably won't get into trouble as long as you use it sparingly. Of course, that's just "the word on the street."

So, you probably shouldn't count on being able to connect to the internet using your phone and your iPaq. You shoudn't have any problems finding accessories for your 8100, and it's certainly the best buy out there right now, but it's not going to help you with your iPaq's need for connectivity.

(But neither will most of the other Vision phones. There are two that might be able to do it, but I don't think you'd want the first one, and the other isn't out yet. The Sanyo 6400 - the only colorless Vision phone - uses the same $60 serial cable as the Sanyo 5000 and 5150. Also you could wait for the Sony Ericsson T608 and then get a Bluetooth module for your iPaq, but that's sort of stretching it.)

I'd say buy the 8100 and find some other way to get a connection for your iPaq 3955.

lgmayka and Martianviking, thanks!!

I did a quick search for some rings and games and found a couple sites that offer a good amount of "toys". More searching to be done after I actually get the phone.

I hadnt even thought of connecting it by other means!! Bluetooth might just be an option (albiet an expensive one).

Looks like the plan for employees is $11.25 for unlimited wireless web. So that doesnt count against my 300 minutes? If not that sounds like a great plan. That and the $26 for 300 anytime minutes is still less than what Im paying for my no frills Nokia and Cingular.

Thanks for the info!!!

Is it safe to assume that light browsing (with images turned off, only webpages no d/l'ing files) would be safe when using the phone as a modem?
