Hello everyone,

I am looking to upgrade to a newer Sony Ericsson phone from Rogers, for what Rogers offers in standard phones they seem to have the best rep around here. My delima lies in deciding which phone to get. Unfortunately Rogers doesn't offer the latest and greatest of SE's product line, and I have a fairly good corporate deal on subsidized prices. Therefore the current options are:

K790
W580i
W810i (with free 8gb memory upgrade)

I have heard good things about all three of these phones, and have played a little bit with each one, however not extensively. The K790 and W810i feel a bit more solid than the w580i, although they are a bit bulkier. I like the nice camera in the K790. I probably wont use the mp3 player too much. I am coming from an old Treo 600 so I will have to adjust for text messaging on any of these phones. I have heard of the w580i cracking on some people, which worries me a bit about that phone. I will probably be debranding the phone to get mp3 ringtones and such.

Which phone do you think is better? Which do you think would be better for me? How does the real life battery life compare for these phones. Thank you in advance.

Aside: What are the main differences between the K790i and K800i?

since you won't use the mp3 features too much then the walkman features on the w810 and w580 arent very important. with that being said, they are both still great phones.
between the two phones i'd pick the w810 but thats just me.
Like you said, the k790 has a nice camera and if you wanna take great pics, then the k790 is for you. although it may be bulkier, its not that hard to get used to.
I can't really tell you what phone you should choose, but hopefully my descriptions help you decide

Im in the same boat. I dont use the MP3 player as much as I take pictures...

The mp3 player on the k790 is fine, i've had it for about a year and it works fine for me...the camera is also good although not as good as i expected it to be.

The main difference is K800 can support 3G networks.

In North America, the one from AT&T should be K790a, which has the 850 mhz band instead of 900.

- K790i 900/1800/1900 MHz for Rest of the world
- K790a 850/1800/1900 MHz for Americas
- K800i UMTS/900/1800/1900 MHz
- K810i UMTS/900/1800/1900 MHz

Anyway, 850 is not a must in NA, 1900 is the default for NA, but in some areas, you might get better reception with the 850. If you travel around the world a lot, then get the "i", you can still use the "i" in NA since it has 1900. If you stay mostly in NA, then get the "a" for the optional 850 band.

If you decide to get the K800i, then get the K810i instead. K810i is the newer/slimmer version of the K800i.

Out of your 3 choices, if music is more important to you, then get something in the W series. But I'd go for the K790 for the better camera and xenon flash. You can still use the K790 as a mp3 player.

definitely K790a, but since you mention you'll get 8GB card with W810i, then the latter is ideal too
the main different of K790 and K800
K790i: GSM/EDGE 900/1800/1900
K790a: GSM/EDGE 850/1800/1900 note: K790i fw can be used on K790a without losing 850
K800i: GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900, UMTS 2100 (same as K810i)

I decided to get the K790a. After calling around half the city I managed to find a rogers that actually has them in stock. So far I have been amazed with this phone. Its definitely the best phone I have used yet, and I am very happy with the decision. I unbranded mine so that I can get mp3 ringtones and a better mp3 player. Amazing phone, highly recommended!

been in love with the k790/k800 since watching casino royale. have heard mixed reactions about the k790's camera though. which is surprising, cause i loved the camera on my w810, and that was only a 2mp, figured the 3.2mp on the k790, would be very impressive.

Post up a pic that you took with your new phone!

The 810 is great but the lack of a true flash is bad news....

the 'flash' that the w810 has is a lot better then the lack of a 'flash' on the w580. although the thing i miss most is auto focus.

I vote for W810 as a great all around phone, best 2MP out there, I use it over the K790 becuase of it's smaller size, and because I text a lot and it is a bit more comfortable and faster to text with, also it's extremely durable, I've lost count on how many times I've dropped it and it still performs flawlessly! and IMO stock W580 pics suck unless in you take the pic in optimal conditions, what's the focal length on a W580 3.8mm like the K550? the W810 is 4.8mm, the K790 is 5.2mm, bigger the focal length = better the pictures in most circumstances

yeah, the w810 can take a beating. in a drunken stupor, i threw mine across a parking lot last new years, and the phone still worked, with only a couple minor scratches, that were barely noticeable, even with knowing that they were there.
