Custom Fonts on LG Voyager (hack)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey guys, upon receiving a challenge from a coworker... who is probably reading this thread anyway. I have a goal... I will install my own menu fonts on the Voyager.

I've done some research into the file system of the phone, and I did find some files on the voyager through BitPim that seem relavent.

Some info about the phone I did this research on:

SW Ver. = VX10KV03
PRL Ver. = PRL 50887
getitnow Ver. = 3.1.4.83

I'm not sure, if someone could check on an updated phone to see if these files are still located where they are on mine.

/brew/mod/21568/vzw_font_arial_13_reg.pvf
/brew/mod/21568/vzw_font_arial_11_reg.pvf
/brew/mod/21568/font_banner_arial_11.pvf
/brew/mod/21568/font_arial_20_reg.pvf
/brew/mod/21568/font_arial_18_reg.pvf
/brew/mod/21568/font_arial_15_reg.pvf
/brew/mod/21568/font_arial_18_ban.pvf

/brew/mod/21570/vzw_font_arial_13_reg.pvf
/brew/mod/21570/vzw_font_arial_11_reg.pvf

/brew/mod/268007 -- Also appears to contain font files, beginning with verdana* ending in .bmp and .ubfd file extensions

It appears that these are font files... obviously. I did some digging on the file extension .pvf. Apparently its an encrypted document format used by a (now defunct) program called PageRecall made by Authentica, which was acquired by EMC Corporation in 2006. It appears to be some sort of plugin for Adobe products. I haven't done much research in this area so any help would be appreciated.

Basically, I'd like to find out what these files control and then figure out a way to modify them. A few questions:

1) If I delete these files (backing them up to allow restore using bitpim)... and then switch fonts in the voyager's menu, what is the risk to my device?

2) Is this a logical place for the font files I'm looking for to be stored in the filesystem.

3) Are there any others that could confirm the file locations for me?

4) Does anyone have access to this PageRecall software that could take a look and see what is needed to get into these files?

5) These explain the vzw default fonts in the menus, but where are the LG Serif, LG Edge, LG Joy, and LG Script fonts stored?

6) Is modifying these files logically going to create any problems in using BREW/Get It Now?

Anyone care to lend a hand?

It's very unlikely that you'll be able to change something like that, but I guess we can see if anything can come out of it if you decide to give it a try.

can anyone confirm those file locations? I'm starting to think those control fonts for brew apps... and not the main menus... does anyone know of a way to extract a firmware image from the voyager yet?

i believe the brew folder's contents are brew apps only, not the actual interface, could be wrong though

hey. i just updated the frimware on my phone and it glitches out. the verizon store says that they cant do anything once the firmware is loaded on there. that being said is there any way that i can either...
A. Flash my firmware back to V03
B. Customize the firmware to the settings i like again.
Thanks.
Any advice would help.
Ps. Could someone tell me why BitPim doesnt let me access all these files you guys are talking about.

Don't really think this is the thread for this, but if you are having issues with the phone that is still covered by warranty (and LG Voyager should still definitely be) VZW should either fix the issues or replace the phone. Take it to a VZW corporate store and have them deal with it--either try to reflash it and/or do something else to fix it, or get it replaced with a phone that will actually work correctly.
