Blackberry Connect on Tilt

I just set up Blackberry Connect on my Tilt. Is it normal for emails to take approx 10-15 minutes or more to arrive with Blackberry Connect? That seems excessive.

Is it any faster on a RIM device?

Thanks.

I had BB Connect for about three weeks but decided to go back to my BB 8800. As for the time it takes to receive an email, here's my understanding of what you have:

BES (Corporate Exchange email): instant.
BIS (gmail, yahoo, godaddy(?)): pretty close to instant
BIS (other providers): polls every 15 minutes unless it finds a message, then more frequently until no messages and back to 15 minutes.

If you don't have corporate email, there are other solutions for the tilt that work as well (AT&T xpresess or www.seven.com). One reason I go rid of BB connect is it kills the battery.

I'm using BIS with a pop3 email account. It sometimes takes longer than 15 minutes to come through. I'm seeing another problem. I've sent several test emails from a Yahoo account and they sometimes never show up.

Is there any way to change to polling times for BBC?

Another problem - it stops working when ActiveSync launches. I've done the AS workaround, where you create a dummy Exchange account and set the schedule to manual, then delete the Exchange account, but it does NOT stop AS from running on my Tilt (nor my 8525 for that matter). I hate AS...

This setup is way too unreliable to depend on.

Thanks for the info.

I know BB Connect was a bit slower than my RIM Blackberry. Not sure why you're seeing longer than 15 minute delays, you can probably get more help at www.blackberryforums.com than here. I use an exchange account for work and hosted gmail for personal as well as a pop but never timed any of it. I did notice that exchange email would take a minute or two to show up on my Tilt after I see it in Outlook where, using my RIM 8800, I would always get it before seeing it in Outlook.

As far as I know there is no way to change the polling time. As for the yahoo email not showing up, are you getting these to your pop email account? Do you have any filtering on either your pop account or the BIS account? You can try sending a message to your at&t blackberry <username>@att.blackberry.net. I'd also try resending the service books as that seems to clear things up.

I have the same problem with AS starting when the device isn't connected and I tried the fix too. I don't recall this being a problem with BB Connect through.

If you're not using exchange, there really is no benefit to using BB Connect over other means to access email with WM. I found it was reliable but the 8800 was easier to use and 3G on the Tilt kills the battery, BB Connect was also a big power drain.

i am getting the tilt and giving up my BB8830 from Verizon. My new company has exchange SP2 and will only support WM6 email push. SINCE i am a blackberrry addict can i run the push microsoft corporate email on my device AND run BB connect for my personal gmail/aol/yahoo accounts on my device as well?

Michael,

Thanks for the info. As far as the Yahoo mail, I'm sending it from the Yahoo web page and it reliably (100%) shows up in Outlook on my desktop. With BBC, it sometimes shows up, sometimes it doesn't. It's not always failing, just about half the time so far. I don't have any filtering set up for BBC, so I don't think that's it.

I would actually prefer MS push, but there are three email addresses I need pushed and MS push only supports one. And the problem with BBC is, it disables Pocket Outlook as far as being able to use pop accounts directly.

I'm getting a Curve, so I'll see how that works out. I've never used a Blackberry, so I'm not sure how I will like giving up all the extra features of WM (even though it's a cumbersome OS). I can return the Curve, if it doesn't suit me.

I was just under the impression that the Blackberry service offered immediate email push (as in, less than 5 minutes). Now I realize the "immediate" push is just with an Exchange/BES account. It makes complete sense that the pop accounts are polled. There's no way RIM could immediately push email from an ISP, I suppose.

Maybe what I'll need to use is MS Direct Push for one account and just use 15 minute polling on the other two accounts. It will work, I'm just haveing to adjust my expectations.

Thanks again for all the help!

I believe you'll still need a blackberry plan to do that, so you'd need a pda and blackberry plan. As I recall, you need to disconnect from the BB service to use the standard email clients. It wasn't a big deal as it automatically connected and disconnected as needed. Since I didn't use the standard email clients that much, you should probably check that is correct. Go to www.blackberryforums.com or another site that deals primarily with BB.

The BB not getting Yahoo is odd, I haven't heard that one before. You may want to check on another BB specific forum, I'm just a user and there are a lot smarter people than I out there.

I agree, WM does a whole lot more than the BB and it isn't as easy to use for phone/text/email. My biggest grip with the BB right now is our corporate IT policy disabled the SD card. Even with the Curve you still have the polling problem, although I'd be surprised if the yahoo issue remains. Good luck.

I'm looking forward to trying the Curve. I think they're supposed to have great battery life, too.

Thanks again.

Posted by: mgerbasio

Battery life on the BB 8800 I use is far better than on the Tilt. The only way I can barely make it through a day on the Tilt is by keeping the device on EDGE rather than 3G. That kind of defeats the purpose.

Well, I'm currently trying the Curve. Email is completely reliable. I haven't missed a single email.

There are limitations, though. I've found the Curve has no document reader, so I can't view PDFs, etc. There is also some kind of limitation on email attachments. Can't even receive attachments that are 55k.

Sigh...

I'm using Seven, and it works great! It's still in beta, but it's free-

AT&T's Xpress Mail (among others) is based on Seven, so it's not some unheard of, tiny company.

Real,
You may want to be sure you're using the latest ROM and BB Connect software from the AT&T site. There are also ROMs available for the Tilt running Win6.1 that may work better.
I found BBC, at times, slowed my Tilt to the point I'd have to do a reset.

thanks for the reply. do you need blackberry data plan to use blackberry connect?

Posted by: mgerbasio

Yes, you need the Blackberry Data Plan. That should be the only plan you need on the phone, you don't need medianet or pda plans. I would just take the SIM out of my RIM 8800, plug it into the Tilt and I was good to go with 3G Blackberry access.

Of course, you need to install the software, have it assign a PIN to the device, etc.

Does anyone knows if the Seven beta work/compatible with the new WM 6.1
update?
