Anyone else have this problem....with GPRS?

Pardon the "wordiness," but I'm not exactly how to describe the problem I occasional have while attempting to make a T-Mobile GPRS connection.

Here goes:

Last Saturday I was connected for well over one hour to GPRS on my p800 (this is not the problem yet!). The next time I attempted to connect - Tuesday - I "timed-out" several times, in other words, I was unable to make a connection. I turned the phone off and then on again, I removed the battery, and tried several more times. No connection. I was located with 3-4/5 bars signal AND a GPRS signal.

Today, same problem. By chance I placed the SIM in my original T-Mo phone (Motorola p280) and was able to connect nearly instantly to T-Zones. I removed the SIM, replaced it in the p800, and Voila!, a successful connection.

Anyone have any thoughts??

I have a similar problem...sometimes i can surf via GPRS and sometimes I can't. But I get an error message saying that there was "an error with the WAP gateway" after about a minute or so. I try again later, and it will work on and off. I thought it might be the provider or settings, but that doesn't explain why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I'm hoping that the R2A firmware will help on this...

Good luck
Ken

Funny thing...

I am seeing the exact same problem here in Ottawa using Microcell (FIDO). Saturday is was "down" for most of the day. I didn't think to swap my SIM out to another phone.
It is also down this morning. The little "earth" symbol shows up but the blinking symbols that show traffic do not. Eventually I get a message when checking mail that says:
Problem Copying messages
Not Ready

When trying to open a web page I see:
information
http://www.google.com/
Could not connect to remote server

The only thing I have changed recently as far as setup goes is that I have set two email accounts on a automatic download schedule for every hour. Do you do this or get it manually? Have you perhaps recently set the email to automatically check?
What firmware version do you have?

I have R1D

Hehehe

UPDATE:
I just finished my last post then I removed and replaced my sim in the phone
Voila. It is back in action. I would be curious to know what is causing it. I thought it might have something to do with the automatic downloading of mail and my provider. For now I have disabled that feature.

Our experience after long sessions of using GPRS on T-Mobile have been similar. The earth symbol on the bottom of the screen would show activity, but would not receive any new packets. A simple "fix" was to:

1. Shutdown the P800.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Attach the battery.
4. Turn on the phone.
5. Continue using GPRS services.
6. IF it locks up, THEN GOTO 1.

* Similar problems occur when using the T68 WAP services.

I hope this is problem is fixed in the upcoming firmware. FOR REAL!

Hey there...

I did have a long icq web surfing session last night but removing the batt didn't fix it. It required removing the sim. Thanks for all the input.... I also hope they fix it up.

AS a former T-mobile engineer that worked on gprs deployment, I can tell you its not the phones....It depends on what city your in and what switching\site equipment they use, the links back to the main server and a bunch of other things....

When you move your sim from one phone to another it causes a reset in the gsm hlr and vlr to ***. your sim\phone number with the diff. imei of your phone, or when you have been off the network for 20 hours in mosy cases... this reset fix's the gprs hang up... exactly why I dont know...But I know they are\were working on it.....Robb Ke3ee

Robb,

Thanks! It's good news that the problem does not involve the phone itself. Is there a backup battery inside the P800 that can detect if the SIM card was removed? Strangely, if we use a Sierra AirCard, or a Merlin PC Card along with the same SIM card for GPRS traffic, it does not seem to hang as often as the P800 does. But, if it did hang, all we had to do was remove the card, and reinsert it into the laptop to get it working again. Is there any explanation to why these data cards would work better?

Thanks again.

With the pc cards I have no idea, When I left we only had the 1 type of card by novatel and it seems to work great for me in my markets, as did my blackberry and pocket pc... but was he is descrbing did happen often with p280's, t68's and 6310i's,theres quite a bit involved with gprs setups and links between the local markets and the home servers, each city does not have its own gprs server.. which would help alot.....when you power down a p800 and change the sim or simply take it in and out the phone does not take a snapshot of the sim, only the phonebook if you asked it to....so when re-powered up it re-registers with the local hlr and vlr's on the network....

And I say "Thank God for that" waiting 20 hours or so for a reset would be awful!
