Tilt red LED of death

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

In the event this has happened to others as it did me, I wanted to share this thread from XDA developers. It seems that some tilts (and other HTC Kaiser devices) have been experiencing a hardware failure in which the phone dies, refuses to charge, and the LED that normally turns orange during charging and green at completion turns solid red. The failure in and of itself isn't that odd, that hardware fails now and again is a fact of life. The fact that, so far, 6 people (including me) had their phones fail within hours of eachother last night, on different parts of the globe, is a little....odd? A link to the thread is below. I was lucky in that my phone was less than 30 days old and I did a painless swap in the store. Anyone else notice this behavior (especially last night)? Gremlins? haha

I just read through the thread at xda... aparently 4 of them were using the same build... might be a group of bad Tilt.

Posted by: sparkles61785

This happened to me about three weeks ago. I had to swap my tilt for a new one. And the store manager was being an ***. He didn't want to swap it. But eventually the jerk did. My tilt was less than 24 hours old when it happened to me. I was pissed. That was my second tilt exchange.

Posted by: kareem9nba

It's not really his decision. He HAS to swap it for you.

Posted by: BradleyH

We currently have 6 Tilts in use, and about a month ago, 1 of them failed this way after less than 1 week in service. The others have been just fine (knock on wood).

Posted by: TitsMagee

Yeah, seems it was a bad batch looking at production dates...crap....

Posted by: ilvla2

It seems all the bad ones have that build date-

36H00563-00M
181007(RC01)/US

Mine is-

36H00563-00M
DATE:061107(TB02)/US (June 11th, 2007, I bought mine in early October when they first came out with AT&T.)

So far, no problems, and everybody else with that data seems to be okay.

I bet there is something not being told in that story.

Mine just fried itself too. It was sitting on the USB sync cable synced with ActiveSync, just sitting idle. Then Windows did the ActiveSync disconnect sound, the Tilt went dark, and then the red LED of death came on.

Charger:
Phihong PSAA05A-050
HTC P/N: 79H00055-01M

Battery:
Samsung KAIS160

HTC P/N: 35H00086-00M
Product of China

Kaiser:
KAIS100
HTC P/N: 36H00563-00M
Datecode: 181007(RC01)/US
Kaiser Mainboard:

Serial: HT749G006030 T02

Unfortunately the AT&T store only had the same manufacture date in stock with the same Samsung battery so I might very well have the same problem all over again.

Here's hoping.

Out of curiosity, was anyone who's phone got toasted using BandSwitch?

Hello I to had this problem with my PPC6800 from Canada on the Bell network.. Get this though they want to give me a refurbished phone and bell says thats part of HTC's manufacturer's warranty policy.. I fail to see how I purchase a phone, it is defective, but yet i get someone elses fixed broken PPC. The only thing I have left to do is talk to HTC themselves and tell them to look at this forum and their own HTC wiki forums as well because people describe this problem on there also. Everyone needs to let them know about this problem.

I recently experienced the red light of death on my Tilt. I had it for 3 months and had no issues with it. Two days prior to the red light of death I installed 1-Calc Lite. I received a replacement Tilt earlier this week and installed all the programs I had on the previous Tilt (including 1-Calc Lite). A day later I discover the Tilt was not charging. I shut it off, removed the battery, put it back together and restarted the phone and it still would not charge. I uninstalled 1-Calc Lite and rebooted the phone and it began charging.

I don't know if 1-Calc Lite is the sole cause of the problem but it certainly was a contributing factor on my Tilt. 1-Calc Lite is a nice program but I will no longer use it at the expense of bricking my phone.

I'm about to buy a Tilt online along with a two year AT&T voice and data plan. If I bought it from Amazon, Letstalk, or Newegg and it dies like this, am I correct in assuming I'd have to mail it back in rather than swap it out at an AT&T store?

So you're going to have to pay for a replacement?

I'm getting a Tilt soon. Maybe it's a good idea to get the insurance.

Darn it! I just got my Tilt yesterday and it has that date code of 181007. I wonder how long before it dies?

No I did not have to pay for the replacement. I did a warranty exchange. Three days ago I updated my Tilt with the new ROM found on the HTC web site and reloaded all my programs to include the 1-Calc Lite program. All is well so far. My current Tilt is the 3rd one I've had (2 warranty exchanges) since November 2007. Hopefully the new ROM solved all the issues. Time will tell.

Where is the date code?

You have to open the battery compartment to find it.

Thanks!!! I'm lucky, mine is not that date!!!

My best friend's Tilt became tilted - stopped charging after only one week of use. I bought mine on the same store last Saturday, so now I'm seriously waiting for mine to be the next one to die. My friend got his exchanged by a new Tilt at the store this evening, but the new one has the same date code.

Posted by: bigsherv

so mine just red lighted this weekend. Comm guy called in and they are replacing it. Do they send you a refurb or a new phone if it is past 30 days. i had my tilt for 3 months

Posted by: CeluGeek

It will most likely be a refurb. You can take solace in the fact that the refurb may have been returned because of that issue and will be fixed this time.

I think it is time for me to hit the sack.....but this just struck me.
Instead of the Red LED of death, wouldn't it be better if the
screen just blinked in giant red letters TILT

That's what a friend of mine said when his Tilt went TILT with the red LED of death.

They sent me a refurb which had a bent up usb port so it would not charge or bunch. our telecom guy chewed out our ATT rep for them sending such a horrible replacement.

Next day FedEx had a NEW tilt for me. Swish!

Posted by: removed

Same thing happened with my Tilt today. I was sending a text while the phone was plugged in and charging... the screen went black and red light of death came on. I was able to get the phone going again by rapidly pulling/inserting the battery, but it made a loud pop and got very hot. I can't make or receive calls or use the Internet connection anymore, so it looks like this one is toast.

I talked to AT&T's warranty people, who agreed to overnight a replacement first thing on Monday. I'm using my trusty old Cingular 2125 for now and although I miss my Tilt, it sure is nice to have more than a few hours of battery life...

Oh well -- back to recharging 10 times a day soon. Let's see how long the next one lasts.

To be fair to the rep, I doubt he had any control over what AT&T sent you out.

I just got my new At&t htc tytn II tilt. I insert the battery and din't work.
Let it charge for a while, all night! In the morning at&t at the display and worked for 10 minutes. The battery area was hot.
I'm sad I bought in US, and now back at home in Europe, let's see how will work warranty.

For those who think to buy a new one check for production number 36H00563-00M date 181007(RC01)/US, these are the bad ones.
