Do you need access to a wi-fi to check and read your email on an iPhone or can that be done through the data plan?

Yes, you can check e-mail through EDGE and/or GPRS as well, no Wi-Fi needed.

Ok, that's what I thought. I just sent someone an email that owns an iPhone and she said she wasn't able to receive the email cause she can't access the wi-fi at her place of work. I told her that she should be able to access all of that through her data plan.

Maybe she doesn't have a data plan (jailbroken and fake activated without iPhone data plan), who knows?

She's gotta a data plan. Turns out that the phone defaulted to a wi-fi source. But, the wi-fi source required a password. So, it wasn't connecting through EDGE. I told her to turn off wi-fi and she was able to connect to her email.
