Motorola Rokr Z6M - Cannot connect to PC

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: deadbolt

I just got a new phone, i like it so far except for the past 2 weeks ive been unable to connect to my computer using my usb cable. I cannot locate whatever drivers it seems to think are necessary, my mobile phone tools software will not transfer anything to my phone, and the only thing i CAN do is transfer music via bluetooth using my mac laptop.

Is there something im missing? ive use audacity to change music formats, yet MT says mp3 is not a supported format. No image is successfully transfered, and i cannot see the phone in my device list once connected.

Am i missing something? am i not supposed to able to customize my phone despite the labeling on the pacakge?

Posted by: deadbolt

After several more hours, the only progress i can make is that when i add a new phone to mobile phone tools, i can get it to recognize everything but the model of the phone. Z6M is not listed under the three main categories. i feel like this is the last problem im facing, i hope at least.

any ideas how to get past this successfully?

Posted by: nfaze

is mobile phone tools updated to the latest version? it's not gonna show the phone if it hasn't been updated to include it in the list of phone's......

Posted by: deadbolt

tools is updated fully i beleive, it took a few updates but its more accurate it seems. Unfortunately im still having problems. Through various errors, i found my way to the model listing menu mentioned before, this time Z6M was found. However it still says my phone is not connected (though it is, since it found it before and its even charging from my computer as i write this).

So i have this cool new UI that resembles my phone now, but it just says "initializing" still, and that my phone is not connected.

anything?

Posted by: deadbolt

it appears that the first problem encountered has something to do with selection of the modem, that the port is unavailable or already in use. eventually it asks me to select my phone. so with this im even further over my head...

Im pretty much at my end with this. I cant understand why the hell i can just plug my phone in, drop a few songs on, and be on my way.

a $200 dollar phone and the only thing that sets it apart from any other now is the fact that it slides open....

Let's see if we can help you get the BP down.

For drivers go here https://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/ (use them even if your system says you have the latest) - Make sure you format your microSD card in the phone then turn the phone off and on again, then once plugged into USB you can drag and drop files (MP3, etc) to it, in the directory's the format creates, from Windows using it as a USB drive - and MPT should work once you install those latest drivers (you already have the lastest MPT from what you've said here) but you can try using it without the SD card in the hanset and try starting MPT and then plugging the USB into the handset, I know it's picky with me too. Good luck.

Did you change your USB settings to Modem/COM?

I have tried that actually, im not sure if i went through the entire process with that setting but ill give it another shot.

I have all the drivers d/l and installed, i dont have a sd card so i geuss i cant format anything. basically its smooth sailing until i have to pick a modem or whatever. It says its already in use or unable to connect and thats the first error i encounter.

Posted by: deadbolt

Man i have no clue now. you think if i bought an sd card this would be easier?

It will be easier with SD if you just want to load up pix and MP3's. But if you want to use it as a modem or to backup your phone numbers and all that, definately not. Maybe there's a seem edit software out there somewhere. I just ordered this phone too and I have some people who always have the newest phones hacked when they come out with them. Stay tuned....

will do, thx.

I feel your pain. After about 6 hours with the same problem I found the following message on Avanquest USA Support:
When I open MPT it never goes Ready. It always says initializing.

1. Make sure you have run the Live Updater. Menus, Setup, Live Update

2. If there are no further updates for PhoneTools available, check that the phone is installed in the Control Panel as a modem. Windows XP: Start, Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options(you might see Printers and Other Hardware, then Phone and Modem Options), select the Modems tab. our mobile phone connection should be listed here as a Motorola USB Modem If it is not, you may need to contact your phone manufacturer for a driver or help installing the phone.

3. Make sure the phone is turned on and active, and is connected to the computer. You may want to reboot the PC and recycle the power on the phone as this sometimes resolve the initialization issues.

4. Using the Device Configuration Wizard, make sure the PhoneTools is set to the correct driver. Menus, Setup, General Setup, Communication tab, select Change Modem, click Next, make sure your modem is selected and click Next, check 'Do not automatically detect the driver. Select from a list.' and click Next, choose the correct Manufacturer and Model for you phone and click Next, click Finish. In General Setup, Communication, check the Exclusive Use box, answer yes to the window that appears, and click OK at the bottom.

It worked for me... Good luck.

After a solid week of investigating Thank you everyone here

1. i installed the drivers from motto dev

2.formatted the memory card that came with the z6m

3.turned off phone and restarted it

4.Installed MPT and updated to the latest version (took a couple of tries)

5.Used the Ei85m or iE85m Setting CAnt remember which (one will work)

6. started moto phone tools and sent my files on their merry way so the phone recognized them as ringtones

(sidenote I have U.S cellular and for a while thought it was alot of DRM crap to get my mp3s as ringtones...im not paying 3.99 for a music file I allready own)

thank you everyone for the advice and help im willing to help someone else through this mess if they need it

I want to use my z6 as a modem for my laptop. I have both a bluetooth adapter and a USB cable I can get computer to recognize the phone and all and transfer files with no issues but I want to be able to use the modem function to use the laptop where I can't get wi-fi. I can't seem to find any detailed instructions on how to do this? I know there has to be a way to do it without actually dialing into an access number. Anyone know how this is done?

I got this all figured out thanks to the assistance of a co worker. First, download the drivers for your handset. With ALL GSM phones, you just need to use the USB cable and set a manual dialer to dial *99#. This will activate the handsets GPRS / Edge and you're good to browse away. This is certainly slower than using Opera on the handset.

All I did was just move the MP3's to my MMC card via a card reader and just pick which one to use as a ringer. easy as pie...but I still want to tether my ROKR. So I will try what you suggest. I plan to use it as a modem like I did with my e815.

TYTYTY after trying everything.. I found this note and tried THIS and it worked perfectly for me!!!!

yes i have this rokor z6m with cricket (CDMA)

i tryed flashing it with with this cricket firmware using RSDlite 3.3 and everything went smooth. but after it was done i can't access the microsd as a mass storage device.

the only way i can access my sd card now is with the bluetooth. but moving files "mp3,movies" take like 60% longer to compleate then using the USB cable. other then that everthing seems to be in nice working order.

if anyone has had this problem or knows how to fix this, i would appreciate ANY help !!

Posted by: KNC

I have a rokr & I already had ringtones on my sd card from previous phone. It will let me copy the ringtones to the phone but when I go to set one of them as a individual ringtone they are not there just the stanard alerts that came with the phone so what now?

Posted by: 61.19

I don't think that the rokr will let you use songs on the card as ringtones. Move the song to the phone by opening the "Media Gallery"; select "sounds"; select the song; then "options"; "manage"; "move"; "phone".

how can i get my metro pcs rokr to work as a modem ? step by step please

Posted by: drewdini

has anybody found out how to get metropcs rokr to work as a modem with usb cable or bluetooth ? help

Posted by: mastersonc

Regardless of carrier, this should do it...

In Handset
-Menu
-Settings
-Connections
-USB Setting
Change radio button to Modem

Connect Rokr to PC with USB Cable
On PC (with Windos Vist)
-Start
-Connect To
-Set up a connection or Network
-Set up a dial up connection
-Enter *99# in the dial-up Phone number
-Leave username and passworkd blank

I use this constantly where I am not within Wi-Fi connection range or on the road but I also work for a carrier that doesn't charge me for unlimited data. This should work for you but I would recommend that you add a large data package if you are going to be using this frequently. Repost with your results.

Posted by: richardmotofan

been trying all of this mpt dont even have this phon listed neither does any software for it i have vista is that the issue

Posted by: Finskr16

Not sure if it's the best way, but i set my phone up as a "A840m CDMA" device. Everything works fine besides the phone image is not a Rokr Z6m... But hey, functionality before cosmetics right!!

Posted by: scottmac112

No, *99# is GSM specific. Cricket and metroPCS are CDMA carriers. For them, use #777. Also, it's only on GSM carriers that your data is gauged. You will only use minutes, so I recommend either getting unlimited web minutes, or only using it on your nights and weekends. And, PLEASE, post your separate problem in your separate thread, not this one!!! It Annoys Me To No End!!! And next time you can't see your "ROKR" Z6m, then tell MPT that it's a RIZR Z6tv. They are exactly the same phone.
