How to prevent data roaming in foreign country?

In order to avoid thousands in roaming data charges, would it be sufficient to simply change the APN to a non-nonsensical address and correct it upon my return?

That's what I used to do with other phones, but with iPhone there is no need. There's a switch in the more recent iPhone firmwares to disable EDGE roaming. It's ON by default.

Plenty of stories from people who were [i]not/[i] as smart as you were, thinking in advance, and ran up several-thousand-dollar bills with AT&T and then whined about it all over the blogs.

So I'm sure AT&T begged Apple to put that in and turn it on by default.

Settings->General->Network. That's all there is to it.
