E-mail and MMS to Japan on 802sh

Hello all,
I'm hoping that I can get some answers and advice from some experienced ex-pats, or people that send e-mail to Japanese phones, from North America

My wife has a v802sh that I had unlocked some time ago. I only payed for unlocking, but when I recieved the phone back it had the euro firmware installed. The phone-call functionality itself works just fine in Canada on Rogers, but my wife would like to be able to send e-mails and mms back to Japan from this phone.

If I can somehow get the phone flashed back to the Japanese firmware, can I then still use the phone on the Rogers GSM network?

And once the correct WAP/MMS/Internet settings are setup will it then be possible to send Japanese text MMS and E-mail to an ezweb.ne.jp cellphone e-mail address in Japan ?

If it is not possible to do this with the 802sh that I already have, can someone recommend a phone that can do this?

Thanks for your help!

no. this has been covered before. the japanese carriers **** up the encoding and all your friends in japan will get is garbage. YOU, however, will be able to read japanese emails they send to your phone.

MMS can be sent to Japan, but they cannot reply - in my experience.

I would recommend getting Euro firmware and using POP email. It's almost as if you've got a Japanese handset.

If you want to input Japanese, there is no easy way. [apart from getting an iphone]

Aesculanus and Martindesu, thank you for your prompt replies.

The POP e-mail idea will probally have to be the one if I stay with the 802sh.

That being said, if I had the 802 flashed back to Japanese firmware, I could then do Japanese text entry into a web-based e-mail client and then that way there should be no issues back and forth, correct? I would have to do it this way because there is no support in the japanese firmware for POP3.

Does the encoding issue go away with the 902, or other newer phones ?

martindesu,
Are you saying that the iPhone can do proper messaging back and forth in japanese from Canada to Japan?

Thanks again!

The Iphone has the ability to type using japanese characters, I think its possible with some sidekicks and most smartphones. All you need is a phone that push's e-mail as that's how messaging in japan works. There is SMS but it can only be sent between phones on the same carrier. Also make sure your friends in japan have their spam setting on their phones set to accept your e-mail address.

Absolutely. I do it about 20 times daily! (using IMAP email)

I hope I don't sound too abrupt. I am playing XBOX live

iphone does not "do" japanese input. it's an ad hoc workaround, and requires the use of a web app and a lot of copying and pasting. don't make it sound like it's a built in function when it's actually quite cumbersome.

Actually, mine has built in functionality. It isn't cumbersome in the slightest. I just put the Japanese language plist onto my iPhone - a very simple process.

This is how it looks. No copying and pasting.

For the record, I didn't like your tone.

well it would seem you have managed to get japanese input on the iphone. i have no idea how you hacked it, but it seems you have. i have gone on several occasions to the applestore in soho inquiring if japanese input support has been add, only to be referred to an archaic webapp at best, or simply told a flat-out no, as recently as last week. even the iphone forum on this board said japanese will come "eventually." don't know why they would appear oblivious to some hack to get it working but the sharp forum does.

now apple simply needs to address the 3g and form factor (brick ≠ phone) issues and i will buy one. hopefully apple will take a cue from some of the larger lcd flips on docomo and au for the inevitable "nano-iphone"

i assume any hack though will be broken in the new update?

Posted by: martindesu

Apple probably won't ever authorise the hacking of the iPhone (the SDK is out in Feb anyway) and I can write instructions down for what I did for anyone that wants them.

Form factor sucks, but I can't see Apple having a flip phone. Multitouch would be less effective. This is why I am keeping my 770SH and when I move to Japan will be getting a SHARP.

The hack is not broken in any update I have performed so far.

martin, can you hack sharp's japanese lang kit onto the 770sh?

Posted by: martindesu

I'll see what I can do when I go home later this week.

hey martin another question: is there any application, even something hacked, that can recognize kanji strokes like the japanese clie? even with the **** form factor and lack of 3g, if i can use an iphone as a kanji dictionary i'd buy one tomorrow morning....

My friend is actually making an app that does just that. Shouldn't be too hard to do as there are softwares that use WACOM tablets. I think I am selling my iPhone and getting a 903SH again though

martin i went out and got an iphone today, and i am following the instructions for jailbreaking, etc to install japanese. i'm at the point where i've already downloaded erica's utilities and am running the vt-100 terminal. the problem comes up when i try to run vi to edit the .GlobalPreferences.plist file. i use the plutil -c xml1 .GlobalPreferences.plist command which seems to go without a hitch, but then when i type

vi .GlobalPreferences.plist

to edit the file and add the japanese string, all i get on the screen something that looks like this:
~
~
~
~
~
~
~
~
~
~
~
~
~

it looks completely trashed. the only way to clear the screen is to press the home button and quit the terminal. much less see the file and string i'm looking for .... any ideas?

Hi dude,

Let me see what I can do. I did mine over 4 months ago, but I will do my best to get some instructions for you. However, I did use a Mac when I jailbroke mine.

Martin
