I have been looking around for a new phone to replace my old dying Razr V3. I am interested in Smartphones and these are the ones I was most interested in.

Overall here is how I feel about them:

BlackJack 1:

I can get this refurbed from Cingular for 40 dollars, which is a great deal and since I like to mod my phones, I can upgrade to WM6 and OC my processor and do other things to make it even better. I like this one because it is cheap and has lots of mod potential.

BlackJack 2:

This one is 100 dollars and I have to sign up for a data plan. It looks like it has alot of new features to it and looks nice, but I am not sure how much better it is then the BJ1.

Blackberry 8300:

I can get this refurbed from cingular for 50 dollars. My dad has this phone and I like it alot, however I am not sure how much modding potential there is with this phone and that is something I definately want.

Pantech Duo:

This 100 dollars with data plan from Cingular. I just saw this today and it looked cool, but I don't know much about it. Any input could be helpful for me.

So if you could please tell me what you like or don't like about these phones or anything I should know about them before I buy one. Thanks for your help ahead of time.

If you want a phone to mod, go for the cheap BJ. It's not an outstanding phone by any means, but it's fun to play with. If you went for the sequel, you'd get GPS and a scroll wheel on front and an LED.

My dad has the 8300, and it's a very nice phone. But as you said, unsure about the modding potential.

Well I am looking at this way, I won't be able to upgrade for another 2 years so I need a phone that will last me awhile. Also is the front scroll wheel a nice addition? The GPS once unlocked what all can it be used for?

Don't know. I got my BJ I in June, and used Premier to upgrade to the 8525 last month.

In all actuallity, the BJ is a decent phone. Great form factor, full (albeit super-tiny) keyboard, microSD... Haven't upgraded to the latest cooked ROM, but it's not too bad. Only complaint is the RSK.

If you're a heavy texter, I can't imagine either one is for you, though. I think I'd rather type on a Razr than it. OM4 wasn't worth the effort, both in screen size and horrible Java platform - but the latter could probably be modded.

The best thing I loved was the size, but if you add a hard case you're up to an 8525 nearly. Without the case, grab yourself a good screen protector and you'd be ok.

Well I am not a heavy texter, I would just say medium usage for that. Also I was looking at the 8525 but I can't find it on AT&T regular retail site so I guess I am out of luck.

BJ II is a nice upgrade if you DONT alreay have a BJ I. What I mean is that I used a BJ I earlier in 07 and loved it, but moved on. I picked up the new BJ II and it is a nice improvement, faster and an has nice features.

I didn't want to start a new thread - I'm looking at similar phones - pretty much the BJ II and the Curve. Currently a longtime Sprint Customer. My goal is a second generation iPhone whenever it arrives - I'm hoping for 3G and GPS.

In the mean time - I'm going to go ahead and jump to ATT. I think I want the BJ II - but sales people for some reason want to push the Curve - but with no major explanation.

What I've found - BJ II - 3G, curve is not - this is one reason I don't just buy the iPhone now. BJ II - very easy to add Google maps and utilize GPS without paying Telnav $10 a month - not sure about the Curve. Plus I like the ability to use Office on the BJ II - included and the quick start guide says you can get your corporate mail on it without IT support.

I know all of these things really point me to the BJ II - I'm just curious- have I missed something obvious about the curve that I should check into or that might sway me the other way?

Prices are about the same - data plans aren't that much different - form factor almost identical, cameras, bluetooth, etc.

Thanks in advance for your help.

the reason why att is pushing the curve is because you have to pay for a 30.00 data plan each month
