Firstly, excuse my ignorance as I'm very new to all of this. I have been doing tons of reading though. Regardless, the more I read the more confused I get

Well, my boyfriend bought me an iphone for Xmas. He told me it was new (yet he purchased from some guy on Craig's list). Regardless, everything seems to be new. However, I was told that unless I jailbreak the phone (it's a 1.1.2) none of the features on it would work. However, many of the features on the phone do work (wi fi, google maps, safari, weather, stock info, clocks). I tunes, google, email, and the actual phone don't work. Is that normal? Or has this phone been jailbroken? Finally, should I just keep this as is and wait 'til a software unlock is possible?

Thanks in advance,
Sou

You've got this all wrong.

There's a difference between Activation and Jailbreak

by-passing Activation allows the use of the applications and Jailbreak allows you to write files onto your iPhone.

and since you have 1.1.2, the current state you're in is the best state to be in until the software unlock is released.

Thanks a bunch! One more question: Do you suggest I wait for a software unlock, or do I invest in something like a turbo sim?

Thanks again!

The 1.1.3 firmware needed to unlock 1.1.2 is just now in the hands of the dev team for hacking. I would monitor for their progress for another week, and if they continue to be stumped by the new 1024bit encryption - bite the bullet on a stealth sim. IMHO.
