Could you please tell me where I need to send my S40 for a software upgrade, I am living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at the moment.

Could you also tell me what I need to upgraded to? I am on software version 2.9.

Thank you.

you need to call the siemens office in your country and they will give you instructions on where and how to send your phone in. software upgrades are done free of charge. you can find phone numbers for international offices in your user manual or on the siemens website (www.my-siemens.com).

the most current software version is v.5.0

About firmware upgrade. I just called to US Siemens office and they said, that one can't upgrade the firmware freely. E.g. if you the customer of Cingular (bunch of moro..s), then the only authorized firmware version is 3.1.0. In case of VS - 3.2.0. Version 5.0 is current for Europe phones only. Basically, if you would bring your phone from Europe over here, then it gonna work. But Siemens wasn't autorized to do such upgrades for Cingular customers :-(

Really? where you get this info? Is it available everywhere or just in Deutschland?

(Frank, confirm?)

i know the engineers were working on 7.0.0. i'm not sure it's out yet. the crap about provider dependant sw versions shouldn't be believed. my buddy's s40 with 5.2.0 works on voicestream just great.

You can use whatever version on whatever provider you want.

However, Cingular has not approved the use of any other version and, by contract, Siemens cannot upgrade your firmware beyond 3.1.0. Siemens is bound contractually by what Cingular approves for use. If you send it in requesting an upgrade Teleplan International (daughter company that does the work) will re-flash it to 3.1.0 and no other.

I'm not sure why they want 3.1.0, I think it has something to do with the way Cingular blocks the Network and WAP options.

It's stupid, I know. Gripe at Cingular for being idiots.

If you have VoiceStream, Fido, or who ever you can get the newest they are flashing to.

There's some confusion about the current SW version. I was told you get 8.0.0 in Poland, in Germany it's still 5.0.0 according to Siemens even if you get 7.0.0 when updating.
It's a very country-specific thing and the engineers themselves seem to have lost oversight.

I'm not sure I understand. So what you're saying is that any given country may have their own version of the software? I just assumed they were all written at Siemens' HQ in Germany. They just decide to make different ver. for the hell of it? (Or are their actually different engineers working on it in different countries?)

Anyone know what the newest version available in North America? In Texas, I believe. How about Asia?

As I said, it's very confusing. The SW is written in Pandrup/Denmark, that's for sure. But the different versions seem not to be released in all countries for some obscure reasons.
