Nokia's response to getting the E51 in Canada
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: frank1111
I was trying to find a place to buy the E51 in Canada, so after searching all the stores in Vancouver and not finding anyone, I contacted Nokia themselves.
I should note that I COULD order the phone online, but I wanted to order it through a local store. Old fashioned I guess.
I've finaly found a store that ordered it for me, and thus offers a 'local' warranty, but its still not the same.
Anyways, I wanted to share Nokia's response, as I thought it was rather lame and full of untrue technical details.
any thoughts out there?
My correspondence below...
================================================== =====
Dear Frank,
Thank you for your response.
We understand your inquiry in regards to the availability of the Nokia E51 device in Canada.
Frank, at this time, Nokia does not sell directly to end users in Canada and the availability of Nokia products is based on the service providers and retailers demand, and the available network technologies supported in Canada. There are several considerations to take into account before purchasing a Nokia phone for use outside of Canada:
1. Most Nokia phones are designed for use with a specific service provider's network. This means that a phone's settings are programmed to operate on a designated network, and these settings cannot be changed or overwritten by Nokia.
2. There are four different technologies and two frequency bands used in Canada. For example, Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) operates at 850/1900 MHz frequencies in Canada. The GSM networks in Europe, Asia and Africa operate at 900/1800 MHz frequencies. Therefore, not all Canadian GSM models are compatible with the frequencies used overseas.
3. Most GSM operators in Canada sell their phones with a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card lock. As a result, their phones will work with their SIM cards only and cannot be activated with a different service provider.
4. Nokia warranties are valid only in the country where the product was purchased and is limited to Nokia Original products. Thus, Nokia does not promote the export of Nokia products outside the country the phone was intended for use in.
We are consistently working to improve our phones and their enhancements. We appreciate the feedback that we have received from you with regards to the availability of the Nokia E51 device in Canada. The information you provide will assist us in our efforts to continuously improve our service to you. Your comments were forwarded to the appropriate department within Nokia for evaluation and consideration.
We invite you view our products at www.nokia.ca and selecting the "Phones" link. Here you can view all current and upcoming Nokia phones and the features they offer. Once there, you may select a combination of phones and features. As all Nokia phones are made to the same high quality standards, we recommend that you visit our web site to determine the phone and features that may best suit your needs.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

Hi, thanks for the response, but as you probably already know, its an empty
answer.
I'm sure you are only providing what you can within the "parameters" that
you are allowed to provide, but the reality is these phones are already
available in Canada by importers and all the technical details I want are
available from the other versions of Nokia's web sites. But I'm sure you
already knew that too.
Nokia needs to be allot more progressive about it's availability of their
products in Canada. A phone like the E51 is already available in the
Philippines! So, people like me are well aware of their availability and
are very interested in getting these products. I just hoped to have the
option to get it through legitimate channels (in a timely manner, not a year
later) so that things like warranty and proper support would be provided.
Ultimately, if Nokia doesn't provide their products to Canada in a timely
manner, then their reputation will suffer, as those who do choose to get
their phones (via other channels) won't have the proper support, and create
a bad representation of Nokia for those around them.
Word of mouth, has always been the most effective form and powerful form of
advertisement.. good and bad.
So, tell me something I don't know please. That is why I'm contacting Nokia
directly.

That's how it works man. You want a certain phone, you pay for it. You may or may not get a warranty, and you have to live with that.
Nokia phones rock. But the nokia phones sold by us carriers are a joke. So I have to buy the phone I want from the unlocked market. No problem. Should be happy you can at least get the phone and there is competition to make the price reasonable.

orangewave wireless in vancouver has the phone. I put in an order for it last friday and they should have it by tomorrow or friday latest. It's on granville and 65th I think. They're chargin me $354 cash for it and I had to put down a $20 deposit which will be subtracted when i pay the rest.
Another store in richmond on alexandra can get it in as well at $370 though with a $50 deposit.

Yes, I agree.. you want something, you pay for it. and ya, there's a few places around town (Vancouver) that can order it in, or have it already.
But my point is that Nokia's position on it sucks. (yes, they have great phones) . And the bs they delivered about the technical stuff just gave me a bad feeling. They should know well enough now that there are vendors in Canada selling thier phones. Like there are Canadian vendors selling unlocked iPhones.
So perhaps, through some public mass persuasion, they could come to realise that its ok to share the good stuff legitimatly in Canada. After all, they do have official Nokia stores in the USA where they sell unlocked phones.

At least you go into it know that you have no manufacturer support and dont have to go through the joke that is NokiaUSA's repair center
What I'm going through right now
