I upgraded from a Nokia 6102i to the refurb 8300 curve on Friday. Phone came in on Monday (Wow! That was fast). I've been playing with it a lot getting used to the full keyboard, the BlackBerry OS, and just about everything else since this is way more capable than my older Nokia.

I've read a lot in these and other forums regarding the use of MediaMax vs a BB plan. Right before I activated my BB, I changed my Media Net plan from Pay Per Use to the Media Max 200 seeing how I figured I would use more data but didn't want the $30 BB Plan. My Curve was already configured on the WAP.CINGULAR apn so I didn't have to change it. I also downloaded and installed Opera Mini. I have been able to surf the 'net via both the Media Net Browser and Opera and can also send out MMS. My connectivity icon displays the small "edge" vice all caps "EDGE". I've read that this is because I have not registered my device with RIM. Since I don't have a BB plan, should I still register with RIM? If I do, will that raise a red flag with AT&T?

You can't register with RIM unless you have a BB plan.

That's to be expected with your setup. Why are you concerned that it's not uppercase? Are you having other problems?

No concerns really, just an observation. No other issues or problems so far. I'm still getting use to the device and all it can do. Pretty cool though!

Hello all you RIM heads! I just ordered my wife the red 8310 (Curve) and had a few questions.

1. According to recent changes, she'll be able to use her 200 msg starter ONLY on the phone right? I mean, she won't have to sign up for the $30.00 BB connect just to be able to text message will she?

2. Being that she has never used a BB before (me either for that matter) do you guys think that she should read the manual or just wing it? Keep in mind this will be my wifes first PDA/BB/Smartphone.

Any other advice you guys want to give to this BB novice?

I believe the $5 messaging plan is sufficient and a data plan is not required. If you try to add one later, you may get stuck with the BIS plan at $30/month.

I read the manual as I played with my new phone. Most of the best info I've found has been here, crackberry.com and pinstack.com. The CD has some tutorial videos that were helpful to me as a first time BB user. Overall, I love my BB and can't imagine going back to a regular phone!

Good luck!

lower case edge means no data service on the phone. says so in the manual that came with the phone...

umm, whats the point of getting a blackberry if ur not getting a BB plan?

I have data such as MediaNet, SMS, and MMS. I don't need email push for my personal email account and can't see paying $35 a month for the same data I can get for $20 a month. I got the BB because I like the full keyboard, bigger screen, media player etc, as well as PDA-like functions that don't exist in a regular mobile phone.

read the rebate form when you get the phone. It specifies that to get the $100 rebate on the curve you must either have a $20 or higher Messaging plan or $30 or higher Blackberry Data plan.

If you're not worried about the rebate, then $5 200 message plan is fine

After playing with the Curve I ordered for my wife, I found myself becoming more and more intrigued with this phone.

For 1. The build quality is spot on and isn't suspect like the Q9H
2. The trackball can't be beat and is best for smartphones
3. The GPS on this thing is much much much better than that of the Q9H
4. BlackBerrys software is soooo much more smoother than WM and feels that way when scrolling around or actually using the phone. This is a HUGE plus. I actually enjoy using the phone more now as opposed to it feeling like a chore.
5. This phone is soo good it almost makes you forgive there is no 3G... almost

Long story short I can't believe I've waited this long to try RIM and have denied myself of their MASTER craftminship. No wonder these things are called crackberry's!!!!!

Congrats to me!!!!!
