Want to share my recent attempts to un-brand my Nokia 6126 (AT&T Customized)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jrsmooth

Recently I obtained an unlocked Nokia 6126 customized to US AT&T Wireless. My goal was to removal all the AT&T customization and install a firmware with Simplified Chinese on it.

After much research online, read through countless BBS and forums, including HoFo, Nokia.it168.com (in Chinese) and GSMHosting.com, I would like to share my findings. I hope anyone out there can chip in with your contribution, so that for those still searching for answers can be more efficient, at least save some time:

1. Even though the Nokia 6126 is similar enough to Nokia 6133 and Nokia 6131, I was told by one of the advertisers here at HoFo, that “…Due to differences in chip manufacturers inside the 6126 sold by AT&T, firmwares for phones in other regions are not compatible. The phone will not operate with other firmware.”
2. The Nokia 6126 is RM-126, while the Nokia 6133 and Nokia 6131 is RM-115.
3. By changing the product code using NSS, it is been widely reported that Nokia 6133 and Nokia 6131 can be unbranded (or at least at some cases), but I have yet to able to find a working product code for Nokia 6126, less a working product code with Simplified Chinese language.
4. I was not able to find a single case where a Nokia 6126 was unbranded with a product code change. I think that’s because Nokia 6126 was only available to AT&T Wireless, and I learned through the research that NSU has terminate support of all Cingular/AT&T products.

If anyone has anything to add in, please do, as I would like to ultimately un-brand my 6126.

Thank you in advance!

Posted by: elyk

I've been trying as well, with similar results. I tried changing the product code to 0532575 in NSS, but NSU still tells me it isn't supported. If you do succeed, please let me know - i'd love to have access to all the stuff that att disabled.

Posted by: jrsmooth

After spending another day reading and research, still no luck. I was thinking about installing Phoenix and flash the firmware, but can not find a firmware for RM-126.

With this, I did found out that Nokia 6126 and Nokia 6133b are both RM-126. I would imaging that product codes for the Nokia 6133b should apply to Nokia 6126, or the Nokia 6133b firmware should work on Nokia 6126.

Anybody can chip in? Thanks!

Hi guys, I just joined this forum...

I would like to unlock/unbrand my (ATT) 6126 as well in order to get new FW with the A2DP BT stack to use with stereo headphones.

Thanks for the summary, I guess I need to get mine unlocked first. Any pointers here would be appricated.

Posted by: jrsmooth

Typically, unlocking is the pre-requisite of de-branding using NSU (I needed to unlock my N75 before I can be de-branded using NSU), but I have read feedbacks from HoFoers that unlock is not necessarily to de-brand 6126 using NSU.

I have also learned from Hofoers that the European version of the 6126 (never heard of it before) was able unbrand using NSU with appropriate product code, but that's no longer the case of late.

I am thinking about starting a "RM-126 (Nokia 6126 & 6133b) Product Code Reporting" thread...

For complete instructions, please email me. There were a couple of different ways of doing this, and i combined methods, and deducted from methods, and it worked for me.

Here is a summary of what i did.

i upgraded my nokia 5300 first. everyone tells u to do it last, thats not true. then i checked what my nokias product code was. i ran nemesis, and changed my product code up one number. then wrote to nemesis, and that was it.

the phone rebooted, and came back up without any tmobile branding.
the same thing for the nokia 6086. with the nokia 6086, which is a hotspots phone, it lost all its phone contacts, fortunately we had backed those up, and it lost its instant messaging and icons for my favs. i had backed up the icons for my faves, but have yet to put them back on the phone.

both the nokia 5300 and the 6086 work awesome. everything works. no problems with sound, no problems with connection. we are running ebuddy instead of instant messaging for now, and its an awesome program, far superior to yahoo messenger and the rest. it runs icq, yahoo, aim, msn, my space and a few others simultaneously under one little applet. we are running google maps, opera mini. no apps cannot run.

the nokia 5300 had absolutelly no data loss of any kind. everything is perfect. its just so awesome to start your ph0ne up and have all these hidden menus, like push to talk, and being able to set access options on programs.

i am not an expert, just a determined person, who did a bit of research on here, and found what i needed, and then applied it to two different phones and thank god it worked out ok. my email address chantelle_sa@yahoo.com

Thank you for sharing Beth! I've just emailed you for the complete instruction. Also if you don't mind, can you post it here?

Thank you again!

Hi Beth,

Thank you for sharing your insights, unfortunately that's not what we are looking for. It is not that we don't know how to change the product, rather, it is that we don't know what product code for the Nokia 6126 (RM-126) that NSU will recognize and then upgrade.

It has been reported few times on the Official 6126 thread that few people were able to unbrand it by simply changing the product code. That has stopped working as of late.

Maybe we just have to wait... but appreciate your kindness!

just use nsu to unbrand it. it worked for the people with 6300s so why not the 6126 (rm-126)?

Hello Fernando20,

Thank you for sharing, unfortunately it did not work, used NSS to change code to 0532575.

Phone: Nokia 6126, RM-126, unlocked via subsidy unlock code
NSU: v1.4.23en
Message: Phone is not supported. Connected phone was not recognized. Try Again, Cancel.

I understand that people used to be able to un-brand the RM-126, but not recently. If you just recently un-branded your RM-126, please share when that happened. Thanks!

Hi Paolo,

I had lunch yesterday but I am going to have one today, maybe tomorrow too!

I understand that NSU used to allow RM-126 to update firmware, but not recently. If you did successfully unbranded a 6126 recently, please share with us.

Thanks!

Hi Paolo,

If you read and understand all posts on this thread, you should understand that, it is NOT that I don't know the steps to unbrand this Nokia 6126, or ANY Nokia phones for that matter, as I have already unbranded several Nokia N75 (using the same steps: change product code, NSU). What's changed, is that NSU no longer (at least temporarily) has the firmware available for the Nokia 6126.

The problem is, NSU is, somehow recently, removed, at least temporarily, the firmware upgrade/update/unbrand availability of the Nokia 6126, not matter what product code I tried.

Now when you reply, please post only if you have successfully unbranded a Nokia 6126, AT&T customized, using NSU in the past two week (today if you can), I am sure many of us are interested in knowing what product code did you used with NSU in the last two weeks, to unbrand a Nokia 6126 with AT&T customization.

Nothing personal, but past experience does not guarantee future results/success/performance (heard this a lot about the stock market lately).

According to Nokia:

"Latest available software for Nokia 6126/6133, product code 0532575
Version: V 05.61

Compare numbers
If this version is greater than your current software version, update now to get the latest features, applications and improvements."

Posted by: jrsmooth

Any brave heart want to give this version of NSU a try? It is in Chinese though. So far it is the only I know that won't updates itself when launching it, and it did detect my 6126 with product code 0532575, saying version 05.61 is available, I just don't have the ball to click on that button. If you do try, please post feedback. Of course, use it at your own risk.

Just found another older version of Nokia Software Updater, 1.4.0en, it is an English version:

If you do decide to try it, please report back.

Hi Jrsmooth,

Not only have I read it over, I also understand it. I dont see what the problem is. I did it, it worked. Is that so hard to understand? its a lot easier than you think. You guys are doing it the HARD way unnecessarily and complaining and b***hing and whining about it.. When the answer is right infront of your eyes.

Plug in the phone to the computer, run NSS, hit the magnifying glass, and all I did was check the "Full Factory" check box, and press the RESET button.

This is the EXACT SAME way that they have been talking about unbranding the 6300's in the other threads. There is NO MENTION of flashing, No Mention of changing product code, why? because you DONT NEED TO.. my MP3 rigntones now play properly etc.. but the the menu has less icons (some carrier specific are gone).. which i DID Warn people about.. but you know what? its the same results people WANT.

Hi Paolo,

Thank you for sharing your insight, I was really excited when I saw someone replied to this thread.

But I was really disappointed after I done your reply. It is nothing personal, but it is probably my English is not good enough for you, but on the second sentence, I clearly stated:

"My goal was to removal all the AT&T customization and install a firmware with Simplified Chinese on it."

So please pardon for my ignorance, where exactly in your reply tells me how to install a firmware with Simplified Chinese on it"?

And since you "Not only have I read it over, I also understand it", I had already done the procedures you proposed on all four of my 6126s, and you are correct, it did removed some customization, but it still won't give me the Chinese language I wanted it. So Paolo, please enlighten me, I am really having trouble to accomplish this.

Looking forward for your reply!

Hi,
I've tried to use the 1.4.0 and 1.4.14 versions that you've posted. But neither of them gave me an option of updating to 05.61 . I did change the product code to 0532575 like you've mentioned and did a full factory reset before raunning the nsu. Was the product code the only thing that you've changed?

Posted by: NozeDive

I hope that this is not off topic, but I recently got a 6126 and stopped using it after a few days beause I cannot get it to run unsigned java applications. It's pretty much dead to me unless I can get it to run third party software.

Actually, all I wan't is to run an IRC client on this phone. jMIrc works pretty well on my trusty Motorola V635 (built like a tank, metal case!), but that phone is ancient.

If any one can help me to run unsigned software for the 6126, or at least point me in the direction of some signed IRC clients, I would really appreciat it.

Again, I hope this is not too far off topic.

No I changed the product code and reset a few times using NSU. Something is fishy with Nokia because I no longer have the option to flash my firmware. It was an option the day I posted.

You should've done it while you had a chance. I've tried it a day or two after you posted, and it already wasn't working. The nsu wants to connect to nokia's server while running, so they clearly disabled it (maybe someone monitors these forums).

As far as I can tell, the bottom right hand corner reads "Fan Hui", in English, it is "Return", so you somehow put Chinese fonts on this phone? If so, please share.

YES, that's what I have been trying to do.

Posted by: Lazarus56

After following this thread, I tried to update the firmware in a 6126 several times with no success. Yep, I used all the known tricks, but it appears Nokia is trickier - here's an excerpt from the log of my final attempt:
<snip>
11:59:36.046 Read SWVer
11:59:36.046 USB ID: 04C0 <- This gets important later...
11:59:36.046 Serial number: XXXXXXXXXXXXX
11:59:36.046 ESN number:
11:59:36.062 MEID number:
11:59:36.062 IMSI number: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
11:59:36.062 Product type: RM-126
11:59:36.078 HW ID: 7201
11:59:36.078 Product code: 0532575
11:59:36.078 SW version: V 04.28
11:59:36.078 SIM locked: No
<snip>
11:59:38.031 Parsing 'tpl_M00001_RM-126_v00003_1.fpl'
11:59:38.031 Parsing 'tpl_M00001_RM-126_v00003_2.fpl'
11:59:38.078 GetPhoneInfo: Is terminal blocked
11:59:38.109 [ERR00057] This terminal support is blocked
11:59:38.125 GetPhoneInfo: Run failed
11:59:38.125 NSL version : 2007.49.1.31034
<snip>

And why is it blocked, you ask? Because also part of the download from Nokia are two template files that control what can be updated using the phone's Usb Device ID in conjunction with the phone's Product Code. The USB ID is used to select a file that contains a list of blocked product codes.

If you look through the directories installed by NSU, you can find the template and blocked list files.

All this dreck means that regardless of the product code that you jam into the phone, the determining factor is now the UsbDeviceId given to the phone when the Connectivity Cable Driver is installed - controlled by a binary file that's part of the cable driver package.

An earlier version of the cable driver package may help get around this, but I doubt it.

Gee Thanks, Nokia

Laz

Hi Laz,

Thank you very much for sharing your in-dept log about this, I really appreciated. This explained why I was offered to unbrand the phone at the first attempt, but never later.

I was thinking to pay a visit to one of those stores in Hong Kong in Apr to unlock/put traditional chinese on the ATT 6126.
Reading this thread, looks like it is a dead end now.
Does anyone try those stores?

Would 6085 better? as it is one of the model carried in HK.

I'm not saying it can't be done by a service centre or by someone who has special hardware specifically for flashing phones. But for the average home PC user who only has a Data Cable, NSS, and NSU, Nokia appears to have made it very, very difficult. With the addition of the USB ID selector, ths doesn't bode well for users of carrier-branded phones that have non-branded equivalents, like the 6126 and 6133.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that for USB ID x04C0 (6126), all product codes from 0000000 through 9999999 are blocked from updates. On the other hand, for USB ID x04C1 (6133), no product codes are blocked.

There may be a way for a very brave soul to convince Windows XP and the Cable Driver that the USB ID for a 6126 is x04C1 instead of x04C0, but I haven't had the time to attempt that sort of (very dangerous) XP registry hack. If someone does, and it works, I'd love to know about it.

Regards,

Laz

Hi Laz,

Do you have any update on this issue? Also, what software did you use to do the logging?

Thank you again for sharing!

Posted by: portAh

Checked with a few stores in mongkok hk, 6126 no go for chinese/unlock.
6085 ok. I would say if these guys say no to 6126, it is probably a deadend now.

Thank you for your update. I was hoping to try a few shops in HK when I am visiting, looks like I am out of luck already...

Posted by: abcrndm

i've been trying to do the same thing with my nokia 6133b, but with no success. i've also tried using an old version of NSU, but it still gets recognized as a RM126 phone.

maybe if we can use an older version of the cable driver like you suggested...but it probably won't work.

Posted by: diznanl

If one were a Nokia Service Center, then one could use Phoenix and and a DKU-2 cable and flash with an RM-126 APAC Simplified Chinese firmware. Or if one simply had the software and tools. But only Nokia Technicians are allowed to have it.

Posted by: packratdog

Would any Nokia or 3rd party service center be able to flash the ROM of a carrier "branded" handset? If anyone has contact information on the closest one here in the Midwest, I would greatly appreciate it. I have a Tmo branded 6133 that i'd gladly pay to have unlocked and debranded.

Posted by: jrsmooth

Well, anyone have any update on this? Or we are totally out of luck, for good?!

Posted by: diznanl

I would follow the steps outlined in this thread:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...rand+nokia+6131

... if using NSS and NSU doesn't work, then you need to get it flashed by a Nokia Service Center, or aquire Phoenix, and flash it yourself.
