can hacktivation update my AT&T acct? strange popup, and my acct shows iPhone...

I tried an iPhone at launch, legitimately activated; but had a lot of issues so returned it. I was a month-to-month AT&T customer before that; and I was put back on a non-contract monthly plan afterwards.

I decided to give the iPhone a try again, but this time did the jailbreak & hacktivation route. I ran into internet connectivity trouble during the process (probably the DSL line), and ended up doing it more than once to get a clean upgrade/jailbreak. This is a 1.1.2 OOB phone; and it is now a 1.1.2 jailbroken iPhone.

The strange thing is that during one "hactivation," I received a popup on the phone telling me it was activated. I didn't think much of it at the time, but today I read online that the popup meant the phone was legitimately activated through iTunes. This shouldn't be the case; I didn't go through iTunes to register/activate, select plans, I'm not aware of being charged an activation fee, etc..

So I just checked my AT&T account online, and it does seem to think I have an iPhone. My phone showed as an iPhone (don't remember what it showed before), and I can't modify the data features on my plan because I "am an iPhone user." However, my plan still shows the Media Max 200 bundle, and not the iPhone-specific data plan.

Is it possible that iTunes was able to "partially" activate me with AT&T? I wouldn't think so; but then, there is my account showing an iPhone. I'm afraid I got saddled with a 2-year contract without realizing it, which is what I want to avoid. (I like not having the contract!) And I'm hoping my account shows the iPhone as a leftover from last July, when I switched back.

Can anyone give me info on this activation popup and my scenario? Thanks.

That's strange...I jailbroke my 1.1.2 OTB and was using it on my BBC plan but the updated image on my account was an iphone. I could still alter my BB plan and it made no mention of the iphone plan but it still displayed the iphone. Perhaps the sim and IMEI broadcast a message to ATT and it updates the picture automatically. Of course it never did this when I was using Nokia S60s but they weren't branded phones?!?!??!?! Very bizarre. I was actually on the phone with an ATT rep altering my account from BBC to media max and she thought I was still using a BB even though the picture displayed the iphone...

The network see's you IMEI, they can tell by that what phone you are useing.

i have att and did the fake activation, avoiding to renew my contract, activation fees etc, and if shows that i have an iphone as well, but just added texting and they didn't even ask for what phone just number, so i don't even think that they know

I figured that but I think it only displays the phone if they carry it. My n95 and N82 didn't show up on my account. The image of a BB pearl still remained. It was only when I popped my sim into an iphone that it changed....

Same thing happened to me. And it displayed that I was unable to edit/manage my features online because I had an iphone. I switched back to the 8310 for a day, and changed my pic to that. The account reverted back to that. I can now update/manage features even though on the iphone (with BIS still on the account).

I'm jealous! If I view manage features, I still get "F999: You can view your current features as an iPhone customer, but you are not able to add or remove features online at this time."

What you guys describe with your accounts and selected phone matches my experience today. I feel better about my hacktivation now.

I swapped back to my e61 this evening (which AT&T doesn't carry), and set my pic/phone to Nokia 7610, and that seems to have stuck. But I still can't manage my features online. Perhaps if I put my sim in an AT&T supported phone, my account management ability would change?

The good news is that I found where my contract is listed as ended, so I'm safe there. If I can't manage my features online, then I'll live with it until I need to change them.

It may only work with a phone they carried. I know thats how it was with T-Mobile.

A quick follow-up -- I set my phone on my AT&T account to a Nokia 7610 last night (while my sim was in my e61 ). Swapped back to using the iPhone last night. I just checked my AT&T account online, and it shows me as having an iPhone again.

So apparently their system does indeed set your phone based on recognizing your device/IMEI.

I wish it didn't affect my plan feature details, but oh well. I wonder if changing those will ever be a problem, if I call in and they see I was using an iPhone?

It won't change your plan features, just your ability to change them online.
