I hate reexplaining, hoping you guys pay attention - so listen up! Heres how!

Junglizt1210's Guide to ringtone making!

Japanese phones are great, but they are not for the scared. As with many other aspects of owning a Japanese phones, there are hurdles to jump through, such as DRM issues, GPRS issues, Re-provisioning issues.... ringtones are another one of them!

Making ringtones is tricky, but not hard. There are two basic steps. These are: Extraction, cropping and conversion of MP3 to WAV, and secondly, resampling, adjusting and conversion to MMF (SMAF).

One thing to remember, is that on most phones, especially the older ones (there are some exception, these are mainly the newer SoftBank phones - but to keep things simple, this method works in the newer SoftBank phones too.), there is a limit of 300kb for the MMF ringtone.

You need this guide, if:
- You own a Japanese Sharp or Toshiba handset. This method might also work for other brands (haven't tested.)

Download and installthese programs:
- Audacity
- Wave Sound Decorator (WSD) - Scroll down to find it.

Note that BOTH of these programs are available for Mac. I don't own a Mac, so I can't test. I presume the programs work in a similar way. So, adjust my steps where you see fit.

Audacity file processing
Install Audacity - done that? Good! Load up Audacity (Start > Programs > Audacity)

Open your MP3 file you want as a ringtone in Audacity (File > Open). Play it back, and crop if necessary. You can do this by highlighting the sections of the waves you don't want and pressing delete. You can zoom in for greater accuracy. Make sure you play it back to make sure it is the way you want it. It should be around 30-37 seconds at longest. Export it when you're done (File > Export as WAV...) and save it somewhere.

Identifying your MA-type (音源LSI)

Check the following website to identify your MA-type.

For example, the SoftBank 904SH is MA-7 compatible.

Wave Sound Decorator

After you have identified your MA-type, you need to open up WSD (Start > Programs > YAMAHA > MA_Decorator > Wave Sound Decorator)

Select your MA-type in the dropbox in the toolbar.

Open your WAV file: File > Open

You should see a pair or single set of waves. We now need to resample:
Edit > Select All
Edit > Sample Type

For "Resample to", select 16000 [Hz] - this is what I use and works perfectly fine. You may also wish to "Convert to Mono". These two settings work for the Vodafone's and all the SoftBank phones. For newer phones, your phone *may* support higher settings, in which case, feel free to try these out. I don't have that many phones to test at hand so I'm unable to advise any better. Click ok when done, and if you previously had a pair of waves, you should now only see one.

To make it louder, you may want to "Normalize" it: Edit > Normalize

Now, save it: File > Save/Save As... -Note: If you own more than one handset that uses a different setting, you may want to name them separately. e.g. I do it like this: ma3-test.mmf, ma7-test.mmf. That way I know which ones to copy for whichever phone I am using.

You're done!

Fantastic! But it seems like there's a filesize or duration limit for some phones? My 920 doesn't like anything above 300KB

Yes, that's right, thanks for checking. I know the 902SH, 703SHf, 904T, and 911T all don't like anything above 300kb - I guess we can add the 920SH to that list then.

I did make a slight mention about the 300kb limit in my tutorial however i don't have that many new phones to test with (911T is about as new as it gets)

The 904sh does have a 300kb limit on it for ringtones I've tried. So usually 16000 hz with MA7 should be small enough for a 30 sec ringtone. Some songs might be smaller or something so you could go higher in terms of the hz but they probably won't be more then 10 sec long if its going to be under 300kb/s

My ringtones usually end up being either 330kb/s thus being over the limit or be around 230kb for my 30 sec ringtones.

All: Btw, what do you guys think in terms of Mono and Stereo? Normalization and No Normalization? I have 3 files and tried hearing them out...all at 16000Hz btw...

In my case, Mono had a very clear Vocal and could barely hear the background music, Stereo, you can hear the vocal, but the background music is quite loud. The problem is that the background music isn't clear as you play it on your computer. I don't know the difference between Normalization and No Normalization because I didn't really experience any difference, or I'm just deaf.

I'm wondering if you guys choose Mono over Stereo or vice versa

I try to get the biggest bitrate and keep it in stereo if I can. If it won't fit, bitrate gets cut but I usually keep it in stereo unless it's reaaaallly iffy.

Stereo also takes double the file size, and considering the limit of 300KB I just make my files mono so that I can keep a 25sec ringtone under 300KB. I can't justify keeping a sound file in stereo when the speakers are so low quality and I'm probably going to hear the phone ringing amongst a lot of other noise around it anyway.

I did sound tests for a range of sample sizes and settled for 22,050Hz in the end, because even on the 903's tinny speakers it sounded a lot better than 16KHz. At 22KHz and mono, I can usually keep 25secs of ringtone below 300KB. If it's shorter, I'll bump quality up to 24KHz. It really does make a difference (treble sounds come out a lot clearer).

Normalization refers to changing the volume level of a sound file to a predetermined value so that it matches other sound files that you would've made (hence normalizing files to be the same). If the volume of the ringtone you're making sounds fine, then you don't need to worry about this function.

I usually try and do it on 32000hz so I have to stick with mono to keep the size down.
Stereo or mono doesn't really matter to me because I think the sound quality goes down a bit no matter which one I choose >_>

It's probably better if a new thread was started. DoCoMo phones are a completely different kettle of fish - standard SMAFs don't work on them because they use some kind of proprietary version of it (.rmf files or something, not entirely sure).

be sure not to run the setup.exe program as it will screw things up. You can also on the 904t and possibly 803t use this to listen to music instead of using beat engine. Not sure on 902t/903t. No limits on ringtone size eithers and works really nice.
