changing alert sounds on my wm6 smartphone

i want to use my own alerts but can't do it..
do they need to be in .wav format for me to use them as alerts?

they can be mp3 sounds.
using a desktop or your file explorer copy or cut your music file and store it in application data>sounds.

Keep in mind that you can't silence alerts like ringtones. If you get a call, you can hit the end button to stop the ring but not with alerts, so if you have a 3 minute MP3 for an SMS message it will play the whole thing and you can't stop it.
