as far as I am aware.. there were initially going to be the two branches for UIQ.. one was going to be the P series and the other the M. The M610 was supposed to be the wifi (camera less) successor to the m600i while the P1i was going to be the successor to the P990. I think SE realized that they had alienated so many fans of both series with the memory issues in both previous models, that they just released the P1i to make sure that their already slim market share did not leave them.

I don't think the m610i is really ever going to be released, and Sony is looking to move ahead to a more powerful device as their flagship smartphone.
