Test alerts while on a phone call???

Does anybody know how to disable the text/im/email alert sounds from playing while on a phone call. i have noticed that when on a phone call if i receive a text or email or voicemail, that it alerts me with the given sound. this sound is also heard by whoever is on the phone call with me. This seems a bit weird. most phones have a alert sound only you can hear when receiving a text. anyone know how to fix this???
