(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: theroyalhoodnes

I have figured out some new stuff for the V9 (rogers) aswell as some stuff figue out by others. Credits go to those respective peeps.

PM me for more info on programs etc.
Can't post anything on his site as it's deemed "warez or pirated"

<<Moderators... feel free to add this in the guides section etc>>

software needed

P2KCommander 4.9d or 4.9e or better available at

http://s5vi.vxxxstuff.com/commander/

Motorola phone tools version 4.51C or better ( Need help PM me )

USB drivers avail at

http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/

Hardware needed

RAZR2 V9 handset
a USB cable ( supplied with phone )

Before starting any operations first install the USB drivers.
next go in your phone to SETTINGS > CONNECTION > USB SETTINGS
and select DEFAULT CONNECTION of MEMORY CARD if you have one installed.
This allows you to uplaod MP3's to your phone easily with windows explorer etc
Drag n drop ease to the folder ?:\mobile\audio ?= your memory card drive letter
DO NOT put MP3's into MUSIC folder. Motorola Gave me these instructions
put them into the :\mobile\audio folder. UNPLUG phone
then you can browse in your phone to the files and listen via MEDIA FINDER etc
FILES WILL NOT APPEAR IN PHONE UNTILL PHONE IS UNPLUGGED
These will NOT be usable as ringtones etc.

MP3 AS RINTONE TUTORIAL
To upload an mp3 as a ringtone
the drop down boxes are directories one side for phone, one side your computer.

On the left side drop down box select /a P2K Phone system ( below it should read P2K:/a/ )
If something else is listed double click the small hard drive icon just below where it sys "filename"
When the files are listed there, double clickthe folder "mobile" then double click the folder "audio"
this lists the ringtones already on your phone.
DO NOT DELETE ANY OF HE EXISTING PHONE RINGTONES ! ! ! !
On the right side browse to the ringtone you want to add. Highlight it with a single click
Click the COPY button at the bottom right side of the program window.
Transfer of the file will commence.
Pick up your phone and Browse to the sounds or music folder. Your file should now be there.

the same principle applies to other file types. below is a list of locatins for each.
(File types listed in brackets)

**NOTE**
RINGTONES'S must be uploaded to this area in order for them to work as APPLY AS. copying or moving
them to memory card will cause them to not be able to APPLY AS. Keep in mind phones internal memory limits. (Files uploaded may appear in MUSIC or SOUNDS folders on phone)

Top drop down box go to /b P2k Phone tflash if you have a memory card installed (may differ without)
then folder > MOBILE
file list should now have Animation, audio, certs, drmtmpl, email, graphics, kjava, licenses, mib,
mixedmedia, mms, mobile, music, partial, picture, ringtone, settings, sounds, system, temp, video,
voicenotes. aswell as 3 files - media.db, mediaf_pl.db, thmb.db

videos (.3gp) -> VIDEO. this functiononly seems to work with " Motorola phone tools version 4.51C "
Tried uploading video to phone in p2kcommander directly with no results. May work with usb mass storage mode havent gone there yet lol

Audio (.mp3 .wav maybe others) -> AUDIO. you may see another folder labelled "audio" inside the audio folder
(tested placing sounds in the first videos folder)
Now you'll be able to select and "Set" the ringtone or browse to file and select "APPLY AS"

screensavers (.gif) -> ANIMATION. you may see another folder labelled "animation" inside the animation folder 240 x 320 size
(tested placing gif's in the first videos folder)
Now you'll be able to select and "Set" the screensaver or browse to file and select "APPLY AS"

pictures (.jpg .gif. maybe others) -> PICTURES. you may see another folder labelled "pictures" inside the pictures folder 240 x 320 size
(tested placing pictures in the first videos folder)
Now you'll be able to browse to file and select "APPLY AS" or view

Other features available in MPT (motorola phone tools 4.51c)
features include : Synchronization, Phonebook, Calendar, Text message (SMS),
Multimedia studio ( use to upload videos ), and Internet connection ( can be used to connect a computer to the internet Laptop etc)
portable hard drive usage (with memory card)

Other features available in P2KCOMMANDER
SEEM FUNCTIONS EDITING (Advanced users only as one tinymistake can brick your phone)
Portable hard drive usage (with memory card)

To replace the startup and shutdown graphics 240 x 320 GIF format.

using P2K commander browse to P2k:/a/mobile/system/

FIRST BACKUP ORIGINALS to your computer.
highlight and delete the two files
keeping in mind this may be similar for othe carriers

splash_rogers_pwrdn_240x320.gif - shutdown graphic
splash_rogers_pwrup_240x320.gif - startup graphic

Then rename the files you wish to use accordingly.
Upload to the samedirectory P2k:/a/mobile/system/
and restart your phone. DONE. Should even notice your shutdown
has already changed.

To replace OUTTER IMAGE on phone browse to P2k:/a/ and search for a file
called Motomain its a GIF 240 320 with no GIF file extension.
to replace BACKUP original and replace with any 240 x 320 gif renamed to
Motomain just remove the .gif file extension before uploading to phone.
Done.

To Upload new JAVA games and apps etc

unplug phone from computer before starting. make sure phone is in normal mode
Plug phone in again and make sur its in USB: MASS STORAGE mode displayed on screen.
Open folder view of phone typically memory card name followed by(drive letter)
for me it looks like this RAZR2 (I) as I renamed my memory card to RAZR2 and the drive letter is I
for most it will probably be E or F or something
Inside folder view you will have 2 folders MOBILE and MUSIC
Open the MOBILE folder. it shows more folders...
Open KJAVA folder. THIS is where you drag n drop, cut n paste
Place the new JAR ( yourapp.jar ) ONLY. you do not need the JAD file
When you have added the file or files you want to install...
IMPORTANT STEP... SAFELY Remove the USB connection again...
In your phone go to MENU > GAMES AND APPS > [INSTALL NEW]
[INSTALL NEW] DOES NOT appear if phone is STILL PLUGGED INTO COMPUTER.
The newly added apps or games should be listed.. just select and install.
Done.

This is a tutorial I found for CDMA (telus, bell etc NON-simcard) phone models (V9M?). It may or may not be accurate for the GSM Rogers RAZR2 V9 but thanks mrsozso

Adding ringtones using PST and P2kCommander
Make sure all neccessary drivers are installed for these programs to work properly.
Use version 4.9.D or greater of P2kCommander.
Set up P2kCommander, select "Options" from the file menu.
Only Check "Use P2k05 Commands(override autodetect)(V3xx, V6MAXX,E2...)"
Under P2k tuning tick "Safe (slow) 3G-P2k cmds (A1000, V980...)"
Start PST and plug your USB Data Cable to phone. You'll see "Establishing a connection with Motorola Phone...."
You should here a couple dings when it's recognized and the PST main window will open.
Start P2kCommander, you should see on the bottom left in the status window:
"CMD: Answer packet invalid!"
"Volume name fail!"
This is normal for CDMA phones.

Select "/a P2k Phone system" from the drop down box, and click the "Re-Read" button. You'll see the phone files populate on the left.
Copy your ringtone to "a/brew/mod/my_ringers" (may or may be "/brew/mod/my_ringers" It may be the same as above in GSM phones)
Go back to /a and delete the MyToneDB.db file and restart the phone. MyToneDB.db will be rebuilt at this point.(again UNTESTED) this command I now works for older p2k phones like V551 (unsure? research some more and dont "BRICK" your phone.)
Now you'll be able to select and "Set" the ringtone or browse to file and select "APPLY AS"

This is great news...I just tried it using P2K Commander and it works great. I was able to modify my theme and/or ring style and apply the regular MP3 as my ringtone instead of having to convert to MP4 first. Now anyone with P2K Commander can use MP3 ringtones without the hassle of converting.

But like you said, keep an eye on the filesize...there was only about 5MB of space in that folder for me to copy ringtones. If you trim your songs down to about 20secs then you should have enough room for about 10-20 ringtones depending on bitrate.

Sweet!

I got the mp3 ringtones to work following your guide, but for the life of me, I can't seem to get the outter image to change.
I've set the file as "Motomain" and uploaded it, but restarting the phone doesn't yeild a change of the outer screen when the phone is opened.

I tried copying the file back to the computer, to check if the phone has the right file, and it turns out right.
Is there some sort of special resetting thing I need to do to the phone to read the new file?

Posted by: theroyalhoodnes

Hi crossfire, I tried to edit the post yesturday after work but there no EDIT button avail. The instructions for OUTTER image arent correct. I'm looking into finding the correct procedure. Assuming you saved the original before you changed it, place the original back for now to be safe. I'll post the correct way as soon as I have it.

In the SETTINGS in the phone.. go to CONNECTION. Select USB settings. make sure the default connection is set to Memeory card
When you plug the phone into the computer it should ding and the screen will display

What does the Telus V9 outer touch screen buttons do differently?

The Telus v9m has the option of viewing and controlling text messages on the outer screen. The roger's v9 does not have this ability.

I think the unbranded v9 also have the option of flipping through and viewing pictures/videos as well, on the outer screen.

I remember seeing audio visualization once, but it might have been for another phone.

Does anyone know what PST is or what it stands for??

Posted by: Acekiller

I have a FIDO v9 as well. there is no CL.gif, and changing the motomain file doesnt' do anything?!?

Any idea on this?

Thanks

Posted by: Johnny Canuck

Is this the best "how to" and "FAQ" thread for the RAZR2 V9 or should we be linking this thread to another thread that has more information? (If so, what thread(s) do you guys recommend?)

Another question I have is where do you go to purchase P2K commander software? I really want to mod my US Cellular V9M. Also, do you have to become a member of motodev to download the drivers I need?

Posted by: Zorac

i have a v9m from telus, anyone know how to turn the camera sounds off? it appears telus has that menu hidden.

if anyone knows of any other de-telus tricks, id appreciate them as well!

If you convert to MP4 you don't need to use P2K to copy it to the phone...you can put it on the memory card and apply it as a ringtone from there or transfer it to the phone via mass storage and apply.

Have you tried Super or iTunes?

No, it's limited by the OS. If you copy MP3 or MP4 ringtones into the phone, you have a limit of about 5MB of room in the ringers folder. However, if you convert to MP4 without the video codec and put it on the memory card or transfer it via mass storage to the phone, then apply it as a ringtone, you are only limited by the free space available on the card or in the phone.

Yes, if they are MPEG4/H.263/H.264 format.

What I've figured out is that if you upload RTs to the Sound folder, the files will show up in the music library as well. It's kinda annoying when you're playing all the music files on the phone, as ring tones will be played too.

I have a V9M from Bell, I did the stupid Motorola Software upgrade and now my outer button for music takes me to the music store I was wondering HOW TO either go back to the previous version or change the outer button for music to point directly to my MP3 player like before, PLEASE HELP, PM ME IF NEEDED!!! thank you in advance for anyone that helps me here...

Posted by: quadraphonic

I can't get P2k Commander operational. It boots up fine enough but won't detect the phone (yes, other software is running in the background). It just says "No p2k device found". Any thoughts? MPT 5+ is also installed.

Posted by: quadraphonic

NM.. I figured things out and got it working. Thanks for the guide!

Posted by: GW2

ive got the razr 2 v9, and it doesnt work for me. it says it needs to delete files to update media finder. but it wont let me delete any files. what am i doing wrong? alright i deleted the files and it works again, but i still want mp3 ringtones, is there any way to hack the phone to juse let me use my regular ones? becaus ei hate having two copies of the same song on the phone wasting space.

Posted by: quadraphonic

Run P2k Commander without anything else running.. upload the songs to the correct directory and you should be good to go.

Posted by: GW2

i think the problem was i maxed out the phones internal memory. but i cant seem to find the memory card on p2k commander. im running vista if that makes a difference. one mroe question. if i put them on like this can i listen to them in the media finder?

Posted by: GW2

alright im going to try making smaller files in audition and using them. ill see how it goes. alright yeah. making smaller files worked like a charm. ps. can i delete the default ringtones?

Posted by: trickster_qc

humm..

I've tried everything with my Fido V9, with p2k, with mp4, smaller files and everythign else but nothing works!

the only thing i got working is, sometimes, i see a file that I have uploaded in the phone with p2k but only the name is right i.e. the file itself does not contain the correct music. it plays the first ringtone of the list.

any help or hints?

I don't know how to change the outer buttons, but you can try going to a Bell store (a dealer will be faster and easier) and see if they can reflash your phone with the previous software version.

The V9 can play regular MP3 songs from the memory card without issue. It's only ringtones that are an issue and the space available to drop ringtones into the ringer folder is limited to about 5megs.

If you read the whole thread, you would have known all this since it's already been discussed.

Posted by: GW2

are you blind? if you had of read my post you'd know that the mp3 i put in the phone with p2k commander was too big, so i downsized it and it worked, i know the phone plays music from the memory card. i use it all the time. dont criticize someone when you in fact neglected to read the post properly. in the tutorial it said you could do them on the memory card from p2k commander to save the space on the phone. that didnt work obviously. i didnt read the whole thread because the tutorial (you know the part where it tells you what to do) doesnt mention a size limit. your an idiot.

Posted by: jaspericka

does someone knows how to get rid of the top bar (network signal, battery, etc..) while playing games? because i cant use my 240x320 games perfectly. Thanks.

Whatever....using P2K to transfer MP3's is unnecessary and a waste of time. It's faster and easier to simply use the memory card as a mass storage device to put tunes on it.

As for the insults...no more help for you...
