Phones that have 1.1.2 OTB cannot be unlocked without the aid of a turbo sim (or some other similar device), or by performing a very challenging and risky hardware unlock. The hardware unlock requires you opening the phone and making some physical connections, while performing certain software patches and code during that time. I would not recommend it to anyone who is not an electrical engineer.

Now, if the phone was a lower firmware version and was updated that is a different story. You see, it actually has nothing to do with the actual firmware, but with something called the bootloader. The bootloader was upgraded to version 4.6 on all the phones that shipped with firmware 1.1.2. So 1.1.2 is unlockable, but that new bootloader is not. The only reason they ask if it was 1.1.2 OTB, is that is the easiest indicator that the phone is indeed loaded with bootloader 4.6.

Does that make any sense? I got distracted several times, so this may just be a garbled mess.

Oh well, gotta run.

thanks for the explaination. its nice to get the know all this so i understand whats happening when im follwing the steps to unlocking the phone. i guess my question didnt get answered, cus what i really want to find out is if i have an older phone that is upgraded to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 can i still do the downgrade/oktoprep method to get an unlocked 1.1.2 iphone? considering that 1.1.3 and itunes 7.6 are the current versions out.

you can always download an older version of iTunes from filehippo or some other site in similar fashion...

what you want is the 1.1.2 .ipsw.restore file, so you can do the shift+right click trick and upgrade to 1.1.2 instead of 1.1.3....

which i would also like, as i have some friends with iphones that i keep up to date for them, and they are still on 1.1.1 (i had such a hastle with 1.1.2 on mine i wasn't about to screw with theirs)....just in case they need to be on 1.1.2 before an upgrade to 1.1.3 can be done, i'd love to have it. i have 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 ipsw files, it would be a nice addition to my small collection.

Use this method for 1.1.2, it's a cakewalk from 1.1.1, took me about 10 minutes.

i know how to do it...

...but now that 1.1.3 is out, if an upgrade to 1.1.2 is required before stepping to 1.1.3 for unlocking purposes, i need the .ipsw.restore file for 1.1.2....
