does the light turn on for you when you plug it into your computer?

Posted by: martindesu

if it's flat - SHARPs only charge with connection to mains power. USB only tops up charge.

Posted by: AL9999

Yeah if your battery is dead you need an AC charger to recharge it. USB charging only works when the phone is turned on.

920SH does not come with any charger, gotta find one yourself

Posted by: johnmoon

Now my two 920sh's are in mississaga now hehe

Posted by: markol

damn.. now i have to wait till the seller mails me the charger AGAIN -_-

but phew.. that's a relief.. i thought my phone was DEAD

btw.. anyone wanna lend me their charger for a second so that I can boot up the phone first.. so that I can charge with usb for now? =)

Posted by: markol

COOL IT TURNS ON NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my dad thought of an ingenious way to boot up the battery.. he used another charger that was same voltage.. and used a positive/negative wire and put one end to the charger and the other end to the ends of the battery..

it got enough charge to boot up the phone.. and now i'm charging through usb =)

... but the sim hack i got is kinda weird.. he told me it was a hyperSIM.. but it came in one of those PSS sim paper case things... and on the back it says 256M... which from what i heard.. it's a pirated version?........ i think i got jipped

Posted by: johnmoon

256M is the pirated one from China

omg so i got ripped off..................

Posted by: riel

Did the seller state which chip he was going to send you? Coz if he told you beforehand.. then it's not his fault.. you should've done some research. But if he didn't tell you or told you it was going to be another sim.. well then you'll have to work something out =S

Posted by: KBoardBox

Buyer beware....

Remember, currently it's the iNEX HS128 chip that we want on our SIM hacks.

My PSS got the inex hs128, its written in really small letters

Posted by: riel

Uhh I didn't pay attention and just stuck it on. It works though, so.. guess it's all good.

Same here. The PSS SIM site uses these things, and so do the real HyperSIMs, which look like PSS SIMs anyway lol

Posted by: markol

actually they posted on their website that they've been using the 128 cards before... but have been having problems with dropped calls, etc... so they said that they started looking for another solution.. which is the 256 one that they sell now... they know that people claim this to be the "pirated" version.. but he claims he hasn't had any customers complain about any problems.. so they've been selling that until now...

btw.. do you guys notice that your signal bars keep jumping occasionally from 1 bar to 3 bars to 2 bars, etc...??

also.. there's a briefcase next to the signal icon on my phone.. but i've already done a "reset all" and it's still there.... ?

Posted by: riel

The signal bar issue is probably only because you are receiving signals from Rogers only on the 1900MHz band, and not the 850MHz, which is the cause of the unstableness.

The briefcase is a symbol of roaming. Don't worry about that.

Posted by: johnmoon

I dont see any briefcase at all on my 904Sh and 705Sh
however, when my friend tried on his 904Sh with fido
briefcase wont disappear whatsoever (im with rogers)

Try doing this:
Settings -> Network Settings -> Select Service -> Manual -> GSM

Since you're in Toronto, you don't need the 3G. This will save you batteries, and also this change in network might get rid of the briefcase.

hmm.. but i've never really had that problem with my other phones that didn't have 850 MHz either...
but i'm sitting here right now and it's staying at 3 bars.. so its okay for now.. i think

Just got my 920SH dock today! Actually, I ordered one 920 dock and one 904 dock...but some how I ended up with two 920 docks?!?!!? Ugh, I'll have to figure this out. And I was so looking forward to charging my 904 in a dock tonight and not throwing it in some chest pocket of a hanging shirt like I usually have it.

Posted by: johnmoon

Kboard: looks nice man, thinking of getting one now lol

Posted by: aw614

dummy phone on a dock lol

Posted by: yangj08

Or maybe for the HK version that's coming out next month?

Posted by: AL9999

Yep.. it's a carbon copy, it even has infra-red, even though Sharp used to kill the infra-red module in their non-Japan phones. I'm sure the contacts for the dock will remain.

Whoa....SX-862!!!!

somebody (the bay area) states that with 3g network, his hypersim is able to unlock all functions on the 920sh!!! Can somebody confirm that...
Is there a 3g network in Montreal with rogers??

Thanks, waiting for my black 920sh from Kuro, but it takes for ever to come in this village....

Cheers,

Eric

Posted by: SeedDestinys

kuro? it's a store? or someone here in this forum? i want to get one too, but it seems like we have to get a hypersim in order to work right?

Rogers 3.5G is useless to Jap phones, as they have the wrong 3G/3.5G frequencies. Doesn't matter what SIM or USIM you put in the 920, you won't be able to use the 3G, let alone unlock it fully.

Posted by: Reevsaj

i thought you download them to your computer and then transfer them over USB? guess not.

Good luck man, I waited like forever to get phones from him
not happy with his business skills at all
supposed to get black and gold then he said no stock after he received my payment
end up received silver and gold since he said i have to wait forever to get black
funny thing was number of members at hardware zone posted their black 920SH from Kuro
from the batch that I suppose to get my unit
Yes, he ditched me and sold black to others for higher price

Posted by: yoosanlicious

yeah rogers, fido have 3g in montreal metropolitain area
but i cant confirm i dont have any 3g phone with me now
anyway can you post the link for the hypersim?

er yeah rogers/fido have 850/1900 i believe for hsdpa
while everywhere else its 2100 or something else

Posted by: KBoardBox

Yup, that's right, it's 850/1900 for UMTS/HSDPA here in North America, and 2100 every where else.

Posted by: riel

Damn.. Picnic is such a cool theme =)

I hope they come out with more free themes soon

Hi, I've been thinking of getting a 920SC, but I have a few questions before I make my purchase. I'd like to know whether or not this works in the GTA area. Specifically on the Fido service. I'm on a prepaid, so I also want to know whether or not it works with GSM sim cards. I understand that you would need the HyperSim to unlock the features, but I am wondering if the basic functions such as the phone, caller ID, texts, camera, video, etc. are available, or if it would be needed to use the phone. I really want this phone for the 5mp camera, so any information before i drop the money for this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Shin

Posted by: yangj08

If you want to use 3G in North America, get a DoCoMo phone. Those support 850MHz.

Since it's a Samsung, you should probably post your questions there. That being said, I've heard that you can use practically everything on the 920SC with a PSS SIM/Hyper SIM, and it'll work fine on Fido in the GTA (and everywhere else on the planet with GSM, for that matter).

I'm tempted to get this one but it's...not a Sharp.

Posted by: SeedDestinys

if soemoen can confirm this
http://cgi.ebay.ca/Softbank-920SH-S...1QQcmdZViewItem

some seller in hongkong said the 920sh fully unlocked and you can find out from his description if this is true and the dramatic dropped of prices of those next sim and stuff could be related to this.

Posted by: KBoardBox

Well, read his description:

Quote:
@DIAL & RECEIVE CALL, VIDEO CALL, ALARM CLOCK,

SMS, CALENDAR, PHONE BOOK Are OK@

*CAMERA, VIDEO PLAYER, MMS, INTERNET,

GAMES Are NOT READY YET*

Sounds like it's the same old SIM hack solution to me.

Posted by: riel

It's not fully unlocked if there are so many features missing.

Posted by: SeedDestinys

meh that still scks lol my frd was so damn happy whne i told her that. so was the 920 meet over riel?

Posted by: SeedDestinys

btw i got a respond fromt he seller, "Hi, it is fully unlocked the frequency" when i asked if its fully unlocked.

Nah the meet hasn't occured yet. From the looks of it, it won't be a 920SH meet anymore, but a general SoftBank / NTT DoCoMo Sharp meet.

lol wtf? Engrish.com much? hahaha Sounds like he means that voice calls are fully unlocked on all frequencies (dependent on network, of course).

Oh how I love Engrish. I saw a picture of a 240SX with an "EXCITING VERSION" sticker on it.

Anyway, I think the seller's full of it. NEXT.

So yeah...

Is it sad that I haven't even gotten my 920sh yet and I'm already jumping up and down for accessories for it?

BTW, does anybody know anything about the SHEBG1 desktop charger? I'm trying to get my hands on one... but the only one on eBay is like 50 bucks.

I've got one. Got it off of Yahoo! Auctions Japan. Net price around 50 too, but if you're lucky you might get it for less.

No no, 40 including shipping, but it still, it also makes me cry.

Posted by: aw614

yeah my 903sh desktop charger I won for 500 yen, ended up being 18usd in total including shipping, at the time I chose air mail and not ems b/c hey its a charger dock and not a phone, so I guess for cheaper items to save costs dont use ems. But afterwards 903sh docks people had bids on them, mine was new and no one but me bid on it lol

So yeah, my Chinese skills aren't up to par... Does anybody know if anything new has come out of that blueshow forum regarding a software unlock?

Nothing new except for the fact that apparently additional hardware is required to access the internet settings menus, and this software "partial unlock" is approaching release. Oh, and someone is apparently saying that there will be a mainland China release of the 920SH (and even a model number- SH9010C- I'm still skeptical), but that's not really relevant.

Posted by: gunadz

Well, the partial unlock is good news then... right?

i too is a bit skeptical about the sh9019c, china just doesn;t have the majority market, and everyone in china is about nokia. also i don;t think theres a 3g network or at least even if there were, its shanghai and beijing. but after saying all this, the olympic is coming up and it might be possible for a sh9010c because the olympic could possibly open up a market for mobile tv in the chinese mobile industry.

partial unlock is indeed good news, at least let me take advantage of the amazing screen to watch video and let me use it to surf the net. i dun care about camera much. and gunadz was the partial unlock 60% unlocked?

Posted by: kurokun21

60% done, but they are stuck at the code to unlock the camera and the rest of the multimedia function.

http://bluetooth.com/Bluetooth/Prod...?ProductID=4837

It is true

Posted by: gunadz

Well, I'm guessing that with the Jap carriers starting to wind down subsidies, the manufacturers are going to have to find different markets to keep their profits up.
But good news! I know my 920sh is on campus... I just don't know where... on campus it is yet. I'm hoping the mail center. So excited!

Er nevermind. It was my other package from japan that arrived. Go figure.

Oh, and I just want to say that China is *not* all about Nokia, at least not in Shanghai. I think about 1 in 6 or 7 phones I see people use on the streets now is an unlocked or PSS SIM'd Japanese phone. It's a minority to be sure, but a year ago it was only 1 in 10, so the uptake is increasing. But this is a rather big city- I dunno about the outlying parts of this city, actually.

Posted by: riel

I've heard that awhile ago too.. that China is all about Nokia. As yangj08 just said, it is not true, but is it still the majority? What kind of Nokia's do they use? N-series or lower end models?

Most of the Nokias I see are either N-series or cheap, bargain-basement models. It appears that for the middle end most people prefer other brands.

BTW- on Blueshow (the Chinese forum sometimes referred to here) a few people are noticing that 920SH phones made in 2008 are showing "中国製" ("made in China"). Never thought that Sharp would outsource production of a "flagship" phone to China.

Hmm I know Nokia does it. When N95 came out, there were phones that were Made in Finland and Made by Nokia.

but if its gonna be made in china is it a bad thing for us. cuz i am guessing whether the unlock would be easier for the chinese hackers. cause you know how the chinese do business.

Means that it'll work in North American on roaming. 'Tis all.

True... maybe it's not just coincidence that evidence of a (partial) software unlock started showing up around now.

Although... if it just means that it will work in North America for roaming, why not include Europe?

I'm almost sure that's not a 920SH. I'm guessing it's one of the Chinese models that's about to come out (SX862/SX-T92/SH9010C). Dunno which one, though (SX862 is due to be out in March -promotional materials coming out on the 4th- so it's most likely that one).

Yeah I was thinking it would be an equivalent, something like an SX862 as well.

if the picture is true it should be the sh9010? cuz its running on simplified chinese.

Hey 920sh owners i found this on jap auctions site..

Will it let u use the media functions anyone know?? heres da Link.

http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k54220059

And if anyone knows where they found the info that the 920sh is nearly 60% fully unlocked please post the URL here so I can contact the person who posted that original msg as I want to get down to the bottom of this if it is REALLY TRUE OR NOT!! so we really got somthing to look forward too.

THanks!!

Posted by: KBoardBox

That's a dual-SIM adapter, not a SIM hack. It lets you use two normal SIMs/USIMs.

Posted by: gunadz

So... I just got my 920sh and had a real scare. I applied my hypersim to my card (cut the hole out ofr the chip etc etc... But after I inserted it, the damned thing refused to come out and I had to grib it by the chip on the card X-x

Anybody have any recommendations for what I should do? I don't want to break my hypersim!

sand down your sim card, it will help a bit

Huh, really? Did you use the double-sided tape (does yours come with it?)? Mine (PSS-SIM) fits perfectly in there, but I still yank it out by the chip lol

Posted by: gunadz

Mine didn't come with the tape, but I used the adhesive that was on the chip...

BTW, anybody know how to copy numbers from sim to the phone? It doesn't want to work for me. Do I have to sync it with the computer?

i`ve been using a program called 3gp converter . . . though there are many settings, ive only been able to get maybe three to work on softbank phones. the video is fine, just the sound isn`t the best. it works on 920sh if you set it as a ringtone, just cant watch it through data folder. only way can see the video is if someone calls you, hEh.

That pic Yang posted up there is almost certainly a Chinese version of the 920SH... I've gone through it and key features from the JP version - user dictionary and software update - are missing, while the menu is only three tabs (connectivity missing, probably on the main menu replacing something like FeliCa).

Look forward to the 4th.

On the subject of Felica- Hong Kong's Octopus system uses Felica technology, if I remember correctly... Is there any possibility that Smartone-Vodafone might leave the Felica chip in the SX862 and create an Octopus IC-appli?

It might be more long-shot thinking and over-optimism, but then again, people also once thought that there'd never be a solution to the 904SH's lock... (I can see why they wouldn't, though- the phone's already estimated to cost over HK$6000, no Felica would make it a little bit cheaper)

Posted by: KBoardBox

Yeah, I wish I can hack the IC chip on any of my MasterCard PayPass on it...hahah (like your standard FeliCa, but for credit cards). They already give me crazy looks at Tim Hortons (my favoritest loveliest el-ghetto coffee chain here in Canada ) when I wave my wallet over their PayPass terminals, even though they have it at every single Timmy's. I can imagine what will happen when I whip out a JAPANESE PHONE and do the same...haha

Actually, I tried to do that with my 920SH when no one was looking and when the lady was getting my coffee and before I had paid the other day....nothing happened.

Posted by: aw614

there is a video from mobile01 about sticking something similar to felicia on the battery cover on the 903sh and buying this with it

Posted by: SeedDestinys

about this topic of felica and octopus and stuff, a frd told me canada is gonna get it but i think she was lying, can anyone confirm?

Posted by: KBoardBox

Canada has had it for a while in some credit cards, but that's as far as the tech goes at the moment. We don't have a big infrastructure like the Octobus...err...Octopus card has in HK, where it's very, very well designed and integrated into the public transportation system AS WELL AS some retailers.

We will, but it won't be too soon. Vancouver's toying around with the idea of revamping our public transportation with the system, and they're looking at London as inspiration....when they really should be looking at HK.

Posted by: AL9999

I don't think Canada uses FeliCa anywhere, that's why your phone didn't respond when you tried it.

I do think it's a longshot Sharp would've kept the FeliCa technology in the phone. There has to be much widespread support from all the key players in the field for the technology to practically work, not just from Sharp. In HK's case you'd need SmarTone-Vodafone's support and you'd need the support of the transport operator who runs that Octopus card system. Even in Japan, it was JR East who developed the Suica card system, and its adjoining Mobile Suica keitai counterpart, not Sharp or any of the operators.

I don't think the world is going to see m-commerce on the scale of Japan's osaifu keitai (mobile wallet) level until NFC gets off the ground. They just announced yesterday or the day before that NFC has finally been approved on as a standard, so we should at last see some of this stuff take off. NFC is backwards compatible with both MIFARE (Europe's system) and FeliCa, so NFC enabled phones should work with the HK Octopus card system, amongst other things.

Oh, I didn't know that. I always thought that IC-appli were carrier-developed; I guess it makes more sense to have the actual developers create them.

(something interesting I found is that because Suica and Octopus share the same Felica technology some behind-the-scenes deals are going on to try to link the two as well as Singapore's ezLink; then again, I found it by reading the Japanese Wikipedia; anyone can edit it and all that so I'm guessing it's a misuse of words or something like that)

Wonder what will happen tomorrow.

I haven't done a really througal indepth test. I can tell you that the suica system and the octopus system are different. I have both cards and I tried. HongKong couldn't read the suica card at all and Japan couldn't read the octopus card at all.

It may be possible to get the phone to work with octopus but you are going to have a few problems.
1. the media lock
2. probally a lot of programing manipulation to change the suica to octopus
3. something else somewould would know better than me.

Just my two and a half cents.

-----

now about me. Got my 920sh in a really nice brush steel; makes me feel like i'm driving a rolls royce phantom - without actually having to be pompus. The screen quality is jaw droping. I use it as a picture viewer. Plus being able to type japanese really motivates me to learn the language. i noticed that most japanese phones have an English to Japanese (and vice versa) dictionary. I couldn't find one on the 920sh. It has a user dictionary, but that is just a record of common japanese words people type; especially in translating it to kanji.

Does anyone know if it is possible to put in a English to Japanese Dictionary in the tools?

-----

about pss sims. Could someone clarify this for me. with a pss sim I can't run 3g, nor mms, nor modern sim cards. I am being told that the modern sim cards run a higher voltage and the pss sims can't keep up with the increased voltage. Can anyone clarify or verify this for me? Or did I just get a crappy pss sim with my 920sh?

thanks guys

Yes, the Wikipedia article specifically stated that nothing of the sort is happening yet. For now if you try all you're going to get is an error. Lots of hurdles stand in the way- how to do on-the-fly currency conversion, for instance.

For Octopus you're going to need a whole new program (every "card" is stored in the phone in the form of a Java program that utilizes the phone's built-in chip to communicate with the reader). This can't be done by an individual; it has to be done by the issuer. For Suica it was JR East, for Octopus it would be the Octopus Card company (if it happens, that is).

But enough speculation about some long-shot event that may or may not happen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think the 920SH has a built-in dictionary (from what I could find out playing with someone else's). If you want one you'd have to download a Java dictionary or use an online one, neither of which are possible at the moment.

I don't know about the PSS-SIM.

Which carrier are you with Dark.eeyore?

Posted by: chokonen888

I used to be on here when I got a 902SH waaay back in the day, had a 904SH until today (was in Los Angeles but living in Tokyo now) and being in Japan, had to upgrade...add another 920SH user to the list.

BTW, wtf is up with Softbank and that BS monthly keitai fee for their new phones. Would have been like $400~$900 to get one direct whereas I got mine off Yahoo for $200...when I was in the shop today transferring my data from my 904, I asked them and the only answer they could come up with was if my phone breaks, they won't replace/fix it for free...will hell, by the time this thing breaks, I'll want to buy a newer model anyways.

Welcome back! Cheers to another 920SH user

What you said is true. Phones come out too quickly, so most of us will never be able to catch up. Unless the phone has a significant sentimental value to you (yup mine does), you wouldn't spend more money to try and fix it if and when it breaks.

EDIT: I want to meet all of you 920SH users from GTA! Check my sig.

In hong Kong I was using peoples for about a month
In Australia (at the moment) I'm using Telstra.
I haven't been back to Canada in a while; I have yet to try rogers on it.

Yep, this crappy 24 month down payment thing is what kept me from upgrading, too. So I did the same thing, got my sweet new 920SH off of Yahoo for something over $200. Why would I pay double that and be stuck with the same phone and carrier for 2 years? Or even worse, pay a penalty of up to $700 if I change the phone before the 24 month are over?!

I hope more people will realize they are better off getting their phones thru other channels than directly from Softbank which in turn will hopefully cause some competition and lower prices here in Japan.

One can always dream, no?

Hey 920SH owners, I have a question.

I have the opperitunity to exchange my 920SC for a 920SH, but at this point I'm wondering if it is worth it? Is a full unlock guarenteed? Is it worth it for me to trade my 920SC?

Someone let me know >.<

Posted by: KillTime111

after reading this forum for quite a while concerning the 920sh, i finally gave in and bought a metallic black one. this phone is.. more than i expected in terms of awesome-ness! ideally, with camera and media capabilities it`d be more cool, but i can wait (^-^b. very glad i bought~.

as of now, the only thing i`ve had a problem with, (that i haven`t read elsewhere) is that... on sundays my phone doesn`t like to really work. last sunday was the 2nd sunday ive had this (so a little over a wk), but i would recieve messages only when i would do something with the phone. for ex: after calling voicemail, or calling someone i would get bombarded with sms messages, and the times indicate that they were sent hours prior. i also wouldnt recieve calls at all, friends would tell me they tried calling me numerous times. this has only happened on the two sundays.. the other days of the week have been fine... should i be concerned? if it means having to use an older phone on sundays, i`m ok with it.. but i`d rather not, ya know? is this normal?

Posted by: KBoardBox

Doesn't sound normal to me lol...reminds me of the Jewish Sabbath phone that shuts off on Saturdays...haha

ive told my friends today "i dont think my phone likes to work on the day of god", hEh. if this persists on the next sunday.. i`ll start worrying for real.

..it shocks you?!! then you drop the thing and commit a huge sin.. two cents to kosher-to-kosher, oh man.. a kosher PHONE.. and a MECCA PHONE, wOooooow. i can`t wait to tell my friends tomorrow (today). i`m bookmarking that article, sanks yO!

Great read

Posted by: wai_lai416

hmm... i'd have to say the build quality of the 920sh is kinda ******... i was cleaning it the other day and some of the gold rubbed off :S it's not much but i lost like 2mm of color on the side of the phone

Posted by: KBoardBox

Holy cow really? I find the shiny front of mine to be rather, uh, soft. I dented it from my phone strap swinging on to it. T.T And then I scratched it when I picked it up with my hand that has a ring on it.

Posted by: wai_lai416

hmm i only have one light small scratch on the top corner of the front ~ i find it doesn't get scratch that easily. i take it in and out of the pocket a lot ~ and the keypad will press on the screen too :S sometimes i can see the keypads marking on my screen :S it's not scratched or anything.. but i worry i'll crush the screen :S

you plug the phone's wall charger into the bottom of the thing to charge

there's actually a solar-powered charge version too.. but it doesn't last as long as this one on one charge

Posted by: riel

No scratches on my 920SH yet! Treat it better than I treat myself sometimes =P

Posted by: chokonen888

get the usb portable charger, works great for when i travel.

my 904 was/is beat to hell so i got the silver 920...the stainless finish is awesome but i give it a year max before i change to something else or it's scratched to death haha

Note that 920SH is 3.2" whereas SH905i is 3.0". Same resolution though, so SH905i should be more vivid. But I do not know if SH905i uses AQUOS. Anyone know?

i read on this site that sh905i using Aquos screen. why not get the sh905i? i believe its very suitable for video viewing too. haha.. i nearly got that phone. but didnt have the budget for it

but im glad i got the 920sh! its got Bluetooth! lol

Posted by: johnmoon

Sladar: 920Sh's screen is better than Sh905i, you can see the difference if you compare them side by side
but Sh905i's screen is pretty damn good already (also 3.2" vs 3")

I liked the 920Sh's screen the most compare to all others phone have / had (inc P905i)

Posted by: slardar

3.2" or 3" they are both awesome! compared to the tiny Notia and all other normal phones

i wonder whats the screen sizes of the next generation of jap fones be like..
3.2" is already very huge for a phone as big as the 920sh..

I agree with johnmoon. I like the 920SH's screen the most compared to all my other phones.

And now, the moment you've been waiting for- the WX-T92.

Notice that TV's been dropped and replaced by SIM Toolkit (poster in that thread says there's no antenna on the back but another says that the TV function's being worked on and that the picture is of a preproduction model). Oh, and you just get a (relatively) boring cream color only. (Actually, it's pink, but much lighter than the Softbank version).

Release date? August/September is what people are throwing around. Hope Smartone-Vodafone's a bit quicker than that.

Posted by: riel

Hmm I must say.. I prefer "SoftBank" and its logo above the keypad.

I guess it's a symbol of it's exoticness.

Notice the keypad markings too. 2 says a, 3 says d.. guess they're using that instead of abc, def, etc.

Posted by: gunadz

Ugh. I'm glad I got my 920sh. The WX-T92 just feels.... wrong. Its like they took the 920sh, sucked out its soul with a shop-vac and then gave it some bad plastic surgery.

But really, thats just me being bitter about a possible price drop on eBay. :P

I'm not a fan of the color though.

Oh! Oh! I forgot to mention! I was taking a Bus (Greyhound) home a few weekends ago and my seatmate had an iPhone. I pulled out my 920sh (That was working w/ my hypersim at the time) and he's like "Dude, cool phone! Where can I get one of those?"

Posted by: kisske

hmm..seems pretty bland to me.
Even the colour is boring lol..And what's up with the keypad having only single letters on them??

Chinese people are smart enough. No need for all the letters to be shown

I must admit though: I would be singing the alphabet song in my head everytime I type an sms

That's what people are thinking- it's just one person that's saying that terrestrial digital TV may be added later on (this phone isn't officially out for another 5-6 months). The latter would be preferable for people looking to import since Taiwan uses DVB and streaming TV might not work outside of FarEasTone.

Ewwwwww.

That thing is like, white and glossy and plasticky and yuck.

I think I am one of the most consistent 920SH users here, and last night I had the scariest surprise from my phone ever since I got it in mid-January: Insert USIM-MEP

The wallpaper jumped back to the default iceberg and plane pictures.

Turned the phone off, turned it back on; back to normal.

Hope it stays this way.

that happened to me once.. a week after i got the phone.. but yeah i did the same thing.. turned it off and back on.. and it hasn't had any problems since.. *knock on wood*

Well that's interesting, enlightening to see those pictures.

So for the WX-T92, digital TV doesn't exist at all; the antenna's been removed. Instead, 3G streaming? Well, I guess if they've already got (what they think is) a decent mobile TV over 3G offering, it isn't half bad because it can be around the same quality as 1seg anyway. SmarTone seems to be doing QVGA streaming now apparently, so maybe FarEasTone is either doing it or planning to do it too.

But, a release 5-6 months away? Are you sure? The phone's already been approved by the FCC more than a month ago, so if they make major changes to it they're going to have to resubmit their application to them.

Not to mention in 5-6 months the 920SH/SX862/WX-T92 is going to be a year old already.

Posted by: KBoardBox

Just saw another TV phone from Taiwan earlier today and it's got DVB-H. Funny how that's not in the T92.

I thought that only the SX862 had FCC approval so far....

If you've seen the way Sharp gets their phones approved by the FCC, they get an approval for one type of hardware base and that counts for all its variants if they are similar enough.

The 903SH was like this - they got an approval for the Euro 903 and used its FCC ID as the basis for all four variants of it as hardware-wise they were identical. Later, the 705SH shared its FCC ID with the SX633/SX633a and WX-T81 (they shared the same hardware base with minor tweaks like IR removed and a smaller sub-LCD), while the 770SH had its own FCC ID (because it was heavily modified vs the 705SH). With 880SH same story - 816SH had its own ID, while 880SH/SX663/WX-T82 all shared the same ID due to hardware base similarities/differences.

Now, I remember reading in a press conference Sharp held earlier this month (reported by ITmedia) that they've developed a tuner package for China's home-grown mobile DTV standard. However because that standard is insanely power hungry (and when it's pumping SD/HD resolution into phones, which it does, it's going to be that way), Sharp said their tuner simply can't be practically implemented into phones at this time. This is likely because the power requirements will drain the phone battery way too quickly.

Now, I took this to mean that they'd probably put their DVB-H/T-DMB dual-standard tuner package in there instead. Taiwan uses (or is planning to use) DVB-H after all. But after seeing these prototype pics where the antenna has been completely removed and there's no TV function in the main menu, I'm just wondering if indeed they're going to rely on 3G streaming for TV instead. Considering that SmarTone already runs a QVGA streaming service and that Hong Kong will probably have to fall in line with the rest of China in adopting the homegrown DTV standard, I suspect what we're seeing with the WX-T92 is probably going to end up as the SX862 for Hong Kong as well.

I guess the fact that the SX862 got its own FCC ID, rather than share it with the 920SH, is proof enough that Sharp were making major changes to the phone's internals. I thought maybe it would just be the removal of FeliCa and changing of the tuner, but I guess they were planning to go further than I thought.

So, I'm not counting on a separate FCC entry for the WX-T92 to pop up. In any case, in about nine days the short-term confidentiality on the SX862's photos and user manual at the FCC will expire and we'll be able to verify all of this at that time. So we'll see what they're planning then...

i dont know, Idont own a 920sh

Just a thought, suddenly there are lots of cheap unlock sim cards for the 920sh on eBay, as low as $30, could it be a sign that a way to full unlock is found and they're just trying to get rid of the old sims? I know that there are differences between the iNex, NexSim, X sim, quick sim, but as long as they all work the same does it matter?

Posted by: slardar

those cheaper ones are probably the "fake" ones. not that reliable perhaps. but if its a good deal, i will try them anytime

Posted by: johnmoon

Rogeryen: full unlock for 920sh is not coming any soon at the moment
no hackers are even working on it as they are busy working on DCM phones

I gave up on 920SH or other SB phones (920P and other new one)
just pray for cross flasing on 920Sh with HK/TW ver (Only God may knows)

http://bbs.blueshow.net/read.php?tid=459612

my chinese isn't that good, but from what i can make out, i believe he says the full unlock is done... anyone else care to translate the rest?...

by watching the video - YESSSSSS its unlocked it looks like u need two 920sh to do it, man does it look like i have to fork out some more cash hope not

Posted by: slardar

if i read correctly, due to some restriction of the unlock, it is not released yet

1) users have to get that special card (at 3:17 of the video. i dont know what is it, looks like a normal simcard) which cannot be used on another phone. (as demonstrated in the video where the other 920sh is still media locked when the card is placed in)

2) users should not plug in the battery and switch on the phone when the special card is not in it.

3) users should not do a master reset on the phone

for point number 1, it seems like it is 1 card per phone and the card cannot be used in other 920sh (media functions will still be locked)

sorry for my bad english

sorry for my bad english

1. That special card is a type of blank SIM. From what I can tell, it's a 2-part solution; phone and card have to be modified somehow.
2+3. I think this is because the way the hack works is by fooling the phone into thinking a reprovision has been done on it already. Thus, if you pull out the SIM and restart the phone it notices that it has no SIM and locks up again. But this makes me wonder because of what I said in part 1, (relating to the SIM not working in a "normal" 920SH) that the phone was also modified some way. Why not just rewrite the firmware to skip the repro check completely rather than just weaken it (this is based on a theory I've been turning over in my head ever since I read that thread)?

The biggest restriction lies in the fact that it relies on a blank SIM. I think in most countries it's either not doable or illegal.

couldnt finish watching the clip since it was too laggy here
but if I have to buy two sets of 920SH, I rather go get HK/TW verison of it

How difficult is it to write a new sim card? Im assuming there is some sort of a reader/writer with accompanying software.
Maybe they are still working on some sort of a complete software unlock, and this is only a beginning of some sort.

Posted by: Darthchilli

100rmb will get u one of them
hahaha

Posted by: slardar

100rmb for a blank sim card?

but what about the program to clone the original simcard? how do we get them?

Posted by: yangj08

If anyone's interested, here's some photos of the HK version, the SX862. Better or worse than WX-T92?

Take a look at the specs too.

Posted by: Darthchilli

hmm

Posted by: johnmoon

Posted by: Reevsaj

Will the Hong Kong version have all the features of the 920sh except for 1SEG?

Posted by: johnmoon

Reevsaj: it should, theres really no special features on 920sh compare to 903sh other than 1seg
(I mean software, not hardware wise)

-MP3 Play
-Media Player on 3.2" Aquos Screen
-MP3 ringtone maybe?

Im so getting it (will wait for for the price to be around 500~600CAD though)

again, i dont think the screen will be AQUOS even though its advertised. it prolly going to be a very watered down version of the 920SH. i hope you guys dont expect too much from it.

Well exactly its the screen that I'm after xD
And that its not as huge as the 903sh, I need to be able to fit it into pockets.
