I was wondering if anyone knew if AT&T was going to roll out any 3G in the Lansing area in Michigan?

kinda wondering the same.

Nothing here yet that I know of. Kind of weird to see Lansing in the title, as that is where I live.

Posted by: spotdog14

i know it is a little strange to see it in the title, but i am interested because i live in East Lansing and work in Lansing, so i would like to know if it is even planned, i mean after all Flint has it, talk about homeless and poor capital of the world, i would think that Lansing would get it over Flint.

Posted by: Heavy Fluid

I am the same. I live about 1000' from the E. Lansing border, and I work in Lansing.

I would think that Lansing would get it (n part) because Sprint's ads specifically mention ATT's lack of 3g in Lansing.

With Grand Rapids and Metro Detroit 3g, you'd think they'd plug the hole in between (Brighton would be nice as well).

I always thought that it said Lansing, but i could never really tell. It would be nice, i still cannot believe that Flint got it before Lansing.

The only reason i think Flint got it before Lansing, is because ATT has more spectrum there, so it may have been easier for them to do it. Flint has 20mhz of PCS on top of one of the Cellular licenses.

Lansing only has 20mhz of PCS, but should be doable as toledo only has 20mhz of PCS as well. However, the 5mhz 3G is deployed in isn't actually owned by ATT, so ATT really only has 15mhz there..

My worries about fort wayne, is that its the same license as Toledo, however the company that holds the 5mhz of PCS 3G runs in Toledo, does not have a license here. For some reason in Toledo, they did not want to deploy 3G in the 15mhz that they had, so it looks like its a tight fit for us

(Note: The way i know th 5mhz of 3G in Toledo isn't ATT's spectrum, is because the true alpha tag displayed is the name of the company that holds that chunk of spectrum in FCC records, not AT&T)

Now here is one thing i will mention, Centennial has the same amount of spectrum in Lansing as they have in Fort Wayne, one of the Cellular sides, and 5mhz PCS. Centennial is running 3G right now in the Fort (trials i believe), I don't know if Centennial has a presence in Lansing, but you might see 3G there as well from Centennial before years end (hell, maybe even before ATT lol). This is only speculation.

Note: all mhz is paired.

I live in East Lansing and I would love for them to put another tower up even if they don't add 3G yet because my service around Cedar Village just plain sucks and isn't much better in many other areas around East Lansing, but its just plain awesome anywhere else.

I'm waiting for De Tour Village and Mackinaw area (Dobson) to get some 3G...I don't expect it this year though.

If you can believe what the ATT rep said at the Meridian Mall, we will have 3G by the end of the year, but it will NOT be on the 850 frequency, it will be in the 1900 band. Which sucks for me because i have a Nokia e51 that has the 850 3G band. It works fine id Flint, Detroit, and GR, but if they dont do the 850 in Lansing i will be SO PISSED!

the only way you'll see UMTS/HSDPA on 850 is if Centennial wireless deploys it there, or if ATT buys Centennial, something i would benefit from too. otherwise it will be deployed on 1900 only for ATT, sorry.

The 800mhz carriers in Lansing are Alltel and Verizon, same in Grand Rapids. The only 800mhz spectrum ATT has in Michigan is Metro Detroit and NW Lower Michigan from the Dobson buyout.

ahh you are right, its sort of a border county, centennial has 850 up in the southern part of Ingham, I think the results came up weird or something when i initially searched. ATT still has 20mhz paired of PCS there, which is plenty.

Any update on Lansing? Someone should call up a local store and see if they have any news. Fort Wayne is supposed to get it this summer, i'd imagine you all should have a similar timeline. We both are supposedly the same market....

a local store wouldn't know anything. thats weird how Lansing doesn't have 3g yet but where i work is a small town called Rockford has 3g im guess because its near grand rapids it has 3g.

If the local store doesn't know anything, then you guys are way off from getn it! Our store told me we were getting it this year well before the press release ever came out, like 4-5 months prior! She said 1st half at the time, which was nearly correct, but actual date prob was delayed, because we konw how common delays at work are! Now they say August at the very latest....I havn't seen any activity yet cept a new cell that is going up between auburn and the Fort. They will probably be a lot faster at deployment than centennial though! lol

Btw i talked to the main store here, which is probably corporate...they just opened another one that is probably corp. since there was a press release about it. We are getting the love.

Is AT&T the landline provider in lansing?

Supposedly At&t will be rolling out 3G on something like 80% of their network this summer to coincide with the release of the 3G iPhone and Blackberry

Seems unrealistic, but would be nice.

I talked to a store in Lansing, they said they were looking at August-September for 3G turn up. For Fort Wayne, they (Fort Wayne store) said Q4, September-October. I kinda figured Lansing would have priority over the Fort (both are the same market apparently), and it appears so. Hopefully no more delays.
