"Locking" the Tilt?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

What I'm referring to here, is locking off the screen and buttons below the screen, so it accidentally doesn't come on when in a pocket or bag. (BTW, I've looked in both the manuals that came w/the Tilt for the answer, not finding anything specific.)

I know that pressing and releasing the power button quickly will sort of lock it, but the same quick press-and-release will also turn it back on, which could easily happen in a pocket or bag.

The only other option I've found, is that icon on the "Today" screen, towards the bottom, that looks like a little padlock. It says "Device unlocked" next to it. When I tap that icon, it then says "Device locked", and to unlock I have to tap a button on the screen that says "Unlock". Is the the actual method to lock off the screen and buttons below the screen, to avoid accidental activation?

(I'm coming from a Treo 700w, and its method was to press and hold the "Function" key, then press "Power". A little message popped up that gave the date and time, and said "Locking buttons and touchscreen". To unlock the Treo, you had to press "Power", then the "Center" button (in the middle of the nav pad) w/in about 2 seconds, or the Treo would shut back off. It was a very good method.)

Anyway, on the Tilt, locking the device: use the little padlock on the "Today" screen?

I use S2U2 (Slide to Unlock iPhone-esque) to lock my screen when not in use. If you hold down the red end call button, you can invoke the lock system built in that is used by the today plugin you mentioned.

Hmm... I tried holding down the red end call button--nothing happened. What am I doing wrong?

By default, you should hold it until it locks. If you're using a custom cooked ROM, it might launch the HTC end key screen.

Nope, no luck--and I held it for twenty full seconds. It doesn't do anything.

I'm using the ROM that came w/the phone, the ATT version that loads when the phone is turned on for the first time. In "Device Information", it's listed as "ROM version: 1.57.502.2", w/a "ROM Date: 08/25/07". I am not using a cooked or otherwise custom ROM.

I've looked thru all the settings I can think of, to see if some check-box needs to be checked, but again no luck. Please let me know, if you have any ideas, why your phone works differently than mine--I'd really like to nail this down. Thanks.

If it won't do it the default way, do it the backdoor way .

Install this cab
http://www.cinetsystems.com/xda/Kai...20End%20Key.cab

Once you install it, go to Settings, System, Long Press End Key. Turn on automatically execute the selected action: Lock device.

I use Start Settings System Keylock.
In that app I select "Lock all buttons except Power Button".

Now only the power button will activate Tilt. Yes it can happen if the power button gets jostled but will time out and suspend again.

If you want to prevent more actions use
Start Settings Personal Lock and assign a PIN.
No Pin no dialing

Thanks for the pointer. What is that site, anyway? The home page looks like some nondescript corporation, but then there's this secret little directory of HTC software. So what is it, anyway?

And I'll check out the software. I assume it's uninstallable? Thanks again.

It's a repository belonging to duttythroy. He is a popular custom ROM cook on the xda-devs forum. The owner of cinetsystems.com gave him free hosting for his files.

Okay, get ready to call me dumb... How exactly do you install a .cab?

Oh, I know that .CAB is short for 'cabinet", and is MS's sort-of ZIP file they use to zip up files for OS and app installs, but I've never actually directly used one to install. So how do I do it? Do I move it to the phone and just click on it? Do I unpack it on my computer first and use ActiveSync to install it? Mungo need help.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. Just in case, can it be uninstalled?
