SOny Ericsson W580i worth the buy?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,

I played around with my cousin's Urban Grey Sony Ericsson W580i today and I started to liking it because it reminds me of my SE W810i that i was using before. I was thinking of buying an Unlocked/unbranded SE w580i from p-mall for ~$300-320 and having my current silver Samsung D900i retire

thanks,
(unknown)

i would say it is definatley not worth to buy... the main reason being everyone has one, its not unique... but if u like the w580i y not consider the s500? u will still get a few OooOO and ahhhs from the s500 while the w580i will just give u a lot of oh tat phone....

s500 costs more than w580 and doesnt have the pedometer or shake function. You could always go the homebrew route and get a s500 housing and mod a w580 lol

I'm sorry, but that is the STUPIDEST reason to not buy a phone, or any product. If you like it, buy it. Who cares what everyone else has. And if you need to use your cell phone to impress people, then I feel sorry for you.

^^+1 When I bought my W810i, I didn't care that every teenage schoolboy or schoolgirl had one and that it's been on the market for a while. It's just a good phone, and I love it, so I bought it.

So, to the OP, if you like the W580i, just go for it!

i'm just saying for the price y not s500 at pmall u can get s500 for approx same price... the main reason not to buy a w580 vs s500 is wat i meant... basically same phone if u dont use pedometer and shake function...

so i guess when u buy things u use all the functions it has??? and not once have u ever went and said look i can do this and tat with it??? when u have something unique and ppl aask about it u'll start showing it off... also if ppl dunt care wat others have y does it influence ppl to buy things that another person has?

anyways @ op w580i vs s500 (same price cuz bro has s500 from pmall) i would go for s500 if u dont use the pedometer and shake function but if u do then w580i besides that s500 is more unique...

why buy it, if you can get it cheap on a contract. Just debrand it and ur good.

op might not want to be tied down to contract... but if u dunt mind then its a good way to get the phone

I like the Walkman phones better so I'd get the W580i over the S500. But then where I live, both phones would be unique. People like Pearls and RAZRs here, LOL! And iPhones.

I bought mine last September, I love it. I usually have a phone a month and i'm lookin for something new. Not this one, it pretty much has/does everything. I haven't found 1 better yet, but i'm always looking. Some people have cracked key issues with it, I haven't so far and use it alot. May depend where you get it . Good luck i would recommend it, doubt you'll be sorry if you buy it My only beef w/ it is i can't find anywhere to buy the pretty covers for it.

$300 is quite a lot for w580. you should take a look around the forum. there are a lot of people selling that phone for 200ish and you can always get it unlocked for $25 at pmall. just a suggestion. =)

id say its not worth the buy since like mentioned above, everyone has it now. and imo it isnt THAT great of a phone... the shake function is pretty useless, how often are you gonig to hold the button and shake the phone in order to change the song? if you're willing to spend 200-300 for it then id say save up a lil bit more cash and get a better phone instead like n82 or something.

Looks like op is banned, maybe he won't be coming back to view this thread?

sorry to bring this up from the dead, but essentially I had the same q as the OP ... I'm looking for this phone b/c it within what I want to spend right now ($150-200)... I currently have a w600 and it's time to retire it for sure....

so I've checked around a bit and this key crack problem is really starting to worry me.... should it? any other issues with the phone?

Cracked keys aren't really an issue anymore... I don't think the new batch has problems.

I bought it and so far I've cracked 4 keypads (KEYPADS not keys = 4 diff. phones). My brother actually managed to crack # 2,4,5,6,8 keys on his last phone.(he plays games on it all day long)

But Now ATT covers it under warranty. so if you don't mind replacing phone every month then it's worth getting. I gotta say though camera - not as good as I expected.

The camera is complete crap... my Samsung P207 looks just as good with 0.3MP

Posted by: SE_ONLY

not too interested about the camera, really don't care since it'll still be way better than the w600... how can you tell the "current" batch is better? is there a serial # I can see to know it's the better batch?

I doubt it

Posted by: SE_ONLY

well either way, I'm not really buying it for the camera anyways.. other than the Camera how is this phone?

Posted by: RLP06

I only have it for the step counter... it doesn't feel classy, but for $200, I wasn't expecting that. I also like the walkman feature, but all phones can do mp3s. Its nothing special

Posted by: MeJiga

Phone's good. I'm not too thrilled to have it (my previous was w600 and for some reason I expected a lot more from this).

It's got a nice Walkman player, my friend's go crazy when I show them that with shaking the phone I can change song (but you also have to keep the Walkman button pressed simultaneously while shaking -which kinda defeats the purpose of being able to change song without pressing anything ).

I was used to having antenna at bottom (w600) but this one is just not as good, sometimes I've found myself go from 4 bars to 1 just by tilting the phone sideways.

Overall if I had a choice (by choice, if ATT offered another SE for free to me) I'd have taken that over this.

PS as for the broken keys last time I read somewhere that the replacements come with some extra rubber padding or something, however I did manage to break another key on my keypad that was replaced via Sony Ericsson Repair center) and the only way to know if it may be good is if you check the back cover it should say the build time . The newer the better. e.g. 07W36 = Week 36 2007.

Theres a way to make it change without pressing the walkman

Press Walkman, Play, Down, Right, Right, Walkman...

now you can shake it without pressing the button... press walkman twice to deactivate...

Its pointless because if you have it like this and you're walking, you'll hear like 10 secs of a song

Posted by: SE_ONLY

thanks for some of the insight... either way I'm sure it'll be a "upgrade" from my w600 to this... I'm not expecting an AMAZING phone.. as budget wise it's something that fits within that ... and something less bulky.. I'm going to have to see one in person first before making the final decision

I sense tons of sarcasm....I'd give you this, but hey they made it so that you have to shake it. So I doubt your songs will change unless you are running or dancing or twitching in that case.
