K790a/K800i vs K850i, is it worth it to upgrade?

Hi guys, haven't been keeping up with the scene for a while, I have a K790a, which I love, but am tempted to buy the K850i....

I was wondering if the camera quality improvement is worth $450.... I noticed it still doesn't have the optical zoom that I want, and I recently bought a 7.2MP digital camera... so what do you guys think?? K850i? or stick with K790a still they put out a camera phone with optical zoom?

Posted by: patrickkc

i'd stick with K790a

Posted by: bodeh6

Stick with the K790a until we here from 3GSM.

having both a k790 and k850 i'll say you really can't tell the difference unless you're pixel peeping. both cameras are extremely similar with their results.

Posted by: MarcoC

In fact K800i camera is better than K850i camera.

Posted by: mdwsta4

i don't know why you would say that, but i'd have to say that's false. when looking at both pictures resized for the web, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. however, the extra 1.8mp do make a difference when enlarging prints as well as cropping them.
not to mention the k850 has a wealth of other features that the k790/800/810 do not have.

for example... which one would you say is the k790 and which one is the k850? and if you're not guessing, why would you say that?

wrong on all counts. perhaps i should have used similar k790 shots. obviously both cameras perform much better in broad daylight. both k850 shots were indoors with flash.

It's hard to tell which cam took the pics when you resize it to 1/10th (in case of K850i) or 1/7th (in case of K790) of the original size. But when you look at 100% crops, K790/K800/K850 are much better. The extra detail added by the 1.8 megapixels are almost completely lost in the massive amount of noise the K850i produces.

You know what, let's add some EVIDENCE to state that K810i is better than K850i.

I did the following: grabbed two pictures (one taken by K810i, other by K850i) from Mobile-Review, both identical scenes. Then I resized the K810i to K850i resolution (2592x1944). I put the pictures together @ 1:1 crop, and this is what came out:

Hmm, which one would be K850i? Hard to tell the difference.

Btw, kudos to the guy from Esato who did this first, I only did it again myself to avoid bad compression.

That blond with the black and white is super cute.

Pic 2 has like a haze over it. Pic 4 isn't bad. You would never think the same camera took these 2 pics. So your test wasn't fair really.

Posted by: mdwsta4

judging by those two photos, i'd say the k850 is on the right. it also appears much more clear. the one on the left appears to have been oversharpened either in camera or in post processing.
am i right or am i wrong?

You're right, but the added detail by the extra 2MP is almost zero.

Posted by: Radiux36

Haha MarcoC. I'm the guy on esato who did the original comparison! Nice to see that someone else appreciates my findings. Feel free to link to my images if you'd like. Here are the original two that I posted:

First image is K800 upscaled to 5mp resolution compared to K850 native 5mp resolution. Small crop at 100% resolution to compare fine details.

Same images now reduced by 50% for "normal" viewing.

K800 on the left. K850 on the right. As you can see, the differences are next to nothing, and certainly not worth your money. As a matter of fact, I feel the K800 actually takes BETTER pics than the K850.

Posted by: samsung.user

Wow, so that is the k800 3.2mp pic and then stretched to 5mp. And then the k850 5mp pic but nothing is stretched out. And the k800 is still a better pic.

I was considering the k850 for some time since the k800/k790 is such a nice phone. You would think that since the k800 was so nice, the k850 would just be amazing. The main thing that turned me off from the k850 was the fact that dust gets behind the lens. Then reviews started to come out showing all the bad things of the phone. The pictures are very washed out and bad colors. Very happy I never went with the k850.

The next cybershot camera I hope they do right. Why doesn't sony use carl zeiss optics? They do on their cybershot cameras. They need to come out with 5mp, 3x optical zoom, and a very powerful xenon flash. All this and of course excellent image quality and it would be the phone to get. Their top phone now is unfortunately the phone to avoid/sell and definitely hurting their image.

man.. i read this thread.. and wish i didnt sell my k790i :-\.. guess i'll have to wait for the k870i :-\

If they make a phone with a "perfect" camera, then no one will buy their Cybershot cameras anymore... it's all business...

Posted by: patrickkc

same, i wished i kept my K800i, ahha i did comparisons with the K850i with an actual camera started a thread somewhere forgot where it is lmao but yea the K850i si pretty crap, makes me want to return it and get another phone

Posted by: Yuujin

stick with the k790. k850 isn't worth twice the price.

Posted by: RLP06

Thanks for all the opinions guys, I'm glad I asked before I went out to get one... saved me $400... plus I think optical zoom is a feature that is very useful when taking pictures

Posted by: shaheenarshan

woot thank god m still sticking to my K800i 2K+ photos and stillgoing strong
dissapointing how SE screwed up this time around though

Has anybody tried taking a 3.2mp w/ the k790 and a 5.0mp w/ the k850, resizing the k850 image to 3.2mp, then posting both in 3.2mp size for comparison?

Here you go:

Pretty much the same thing i've demonstrated before. K850 might have a *tiny* bit of extra detail, but its pretty much ruined by the added noise the camera produces, that IMO makes it actually look worse.

K800 on the left, K850 on the right.

Posted by: ThorBlaze Dragon

the profit of K850 is able to record 30fps VGA video
but I'd stay with K790a till its successor with AWS support (not K850 of course because it does not)
K790a in K810 housing looks cuter, and the buttons are way easier to press

Posted by: cta16

If you check out GSM arena, you'll see that the K850 performed the worst among other 5mp camera phones such as the N95 and Samsung g800. Its a shame that Sony, a well known camera company would be beat by Nokia( a non existent camera company)

Posted by: aalui

if you have k800, yes you could use the 850 and wait for the new firmware

if not just stick with the k790 and wait

they are 2 different phones, in this case more money = more functions

if you have the money, go for the n82 i believe its double the amount of a k790

well i have $200 to use twds the n82 - GOOOO GIANTS _ SCREW U PATS AND UR ARROGANT FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 18-1~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was seriously considering upgrading to the K850 with Rogers before reading this thread. Now I'm not sure. I'm also considering getting the Z750 with Fido. Each of those choices would open me up to 3G and unlimited browsing for $7. But if I get an unlocked K850 or a Nokia N82, no unlimited browsing. So it's a difficult decision. The N82 in black with North American 3G would be perfect. Given that Nokia has recently added North American 3G both to the regular N95 and 8GB N95, why wouldn't they release the N82 with NA 3G?

great post.

can't wait to get my k790a!
