Can the Centro do this?

So i'm thinking about getting a Centro and switching to Sprint. I'm currently on verizon with an outdated V (vx9800) which i absolutely love but i want to upgrade.

so i have a couple questions about everyday day use that probably couldn't be answered by searching.

can the centro have separate ringtones for diff callers? for txt msgs?
how are text messages displayed? individual or thread/IM style?
does it alert you of new emails?
how loud is the speaker?

does it do everything a blackberry (pearl) do? or it the blackberry better?

most IMPORTANTLY, how is Sprint networks vs. verizon? i will be pretty peeved if i switch for the phone but then get many dropped calls or no service and don't even want to use it. (i live in the MD/DC area)

centro users please help me lol.

callers: yes
text: yes (with 3rd party software)

Threaded

does it alert you of new emails?
Yes

how loud is the speaker?
Good

does it do everything a blackberry (pearl) do? or it the blackberry better?
Never used a blackberry

most IMPORTANTLY, how is Sprint networks vs. verizon?
Personally, I think Verizon is better than sprint. However, You won't be paying the Verizon price for service and data.

I already have Sprint, and I'm looking at getting a Centro. As far as Sprint's service... Verizon has a wider coverage area. However, if I had Verizon, and got the same services I get from Sprint, I'd be paying about $10 a month more.

Edit: Scratch that, it would be $25 more per month for 450 minutes, unlimited data, free N&W, etc.

thanks for all your help guys

yea it a tough decision cuz if i'm paying $15/mo more it's worth it to never have a dropped call.

As far as a comparison with a Blackberry Pearl 2, the devices have different overall functionalities. If you use email more often than the Blackberry is going to be your better device, however the Centro does do push email but is a better overall pda in the sense that its a little cleaner on the calendar side and can be mor fun in some areas. The centro has its drawback as it does not have built in GPS navigation capability. As far as service goes, I have worked for both Sprint and Verizon Wireless and both have their holes as far as coverage. I can't say that I have had more dropped calls with one over the other. In fact you can make the Centro roam onto the VZW network if there is limited Sprint service but I have not had that be an issue. I would say try the 30 day and see if it works but its beautiful on the other side.

What do you base the coverage difference on?

When I look at the national coverage maps for each, Sprint (including the "roaming" area, which included with no extra charges) has more area covered than Verizon.

I base it on the fact that there are more places where my friends Verizon phone works and mine does not, and there are none where mine works and his does not.

I can tell you from a retail standpoint that I certainly have customers that use phones in this area on Sprint that Verizon doesn't cover and vice versa. I do have a customer that works for Verizon but uses sprint because of the coverage with VZW not going near his house.

These generalizations are not really helpful for the OP -- it is well-established that each carrier has its strong coverage and weak coverage areas. What is important for the OP is the coverage in the areas that she is likely to need it. All she says is MD/DC. I have spent extensive time in the MD/DC area, down to Alexandria, VA, and up throughout Baltimore. Sprint coverage in these parts is excellent. But I would never *guarantee* no dropped calls for either Sprint or Verizon. She should really ask friends who have Sprint in her area whether coverage is what she wants...

Verizon does not work in my house but I have full strength with Sprint.

You're right, this is the best idea. Experiences with providers is subjective, the area you're in and the phone you use make all the difference. What works for someone on the west coast may work terrible for someone on the east coast, and vice versa.

Taking advantage of the trial period wold be a good idea as well, she could start a trial and port later if she decides to keep the service.

Have no fear, the Palm Centro is here!!!!

Engadget reported yesterday that Verizon Wireless is going to start offering the Centro!

"Centro fans will be happy to hear that the diminutive Garnet phone will finally hit Verizon following Sprint and AT&T launches in the tail end of May or the beginning of June"
