Rogers data plan necessary for HTC Touch or Pay As You Go = OK?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: I c o n

Hey guys, right now I have a Motorola RAZR V3 and I'm currently on a Pay As You Go (evenings + weekends) plan with Rogers in Canada...at the beginning of the year I bought a $100 card to last me for the year, and now I'm looking at purchasing an HTC Touch because my RAZR seems to be on its last legs at this point.

Anyways, my question is if I buy an HTC Touch, will I be able to use it using my current SIM card and plan? Or will I have to signup for some outrageous monthly bill? Right now I'm quite content with the plan I have; I only pay for the airtime I use. I really like this phone because of the touch feature (I was disappointed with the iPhone's unavailability in Canada), and I am also extremely interested in having a phone with WiFi capabilities so that I can check my email/MSN for free instead of paying per KB via data transfer/usage or whatever it is. Anyways, can anyone tell me by chance if I would be able to use the HTC Touch on my current plan or if I would need to upgrade? Thanks!

You can put your sim in and Rogers or unlocked phone and it will be fine on Pay As You Go

Posted by: Slylikeafox87

Pop ye old sim into an unlocked phone, and just make sure your on wifi instead of Edge as the Touch has a nasty tendency to switch to Edge for no reason, i think i got charged for data when the only places i use the IE is my university and home.

Posted by: Cosmic Blue

you can use it with your current plan but I suggest you sign up for a good data plan if you intend to do any browsering.

Hspda will eat up your minutes like crazy. Wifi will cause no cost but you must check to make sure you are using wifi, the phne has a tendency to jump over HSPda if it finds a better signal.

Hmmmmm, what are you guys talking about? I have The Touch on Bell Mobility and WI-FI is NOT an option but I want it! You guys have a hack to use the wi-fi? All you can do is use it as a modem. Also, get on Bell:

$7/month UNLIMITED DATA.

Well I C O N wants a Touch on Rogers and the wifi option is available as it isn't the bastardized version on Telus and Bell (well its cuz you have a sweet data plan too ). You win some and you lose some, unlimited internet versus wireless usage. I'm hoping that when the iPhone comes to Rogers a slightly more sane data plan would come out instead of the $10/Mb plan or the $95 blackberry plans they got going on. Cheers.

That will be sweet but here in Ottawa, Rogers territory sucks. 5 minutes off the Queensway and no signal. Bell has a signal 2 hours north at the cottage. Yes, pick your poison, insane data costs but wi-fi access or no wi-fi but negligible data bills. Guess I'll be a happy camper with unlimited data for peanuts.

Well I don't plan on using it a lot a alot, my college has a good wireless connection in some areas in the school and I'd probably use it in those areas to check my email and facebook and such.

By chance do you guys know if there is a way that the phone will tell you if a WiFi connection is available? Or...how does that work exactly? You said something about it switching from WiFi to something else that costs?

And the thing you were talking about it switching to, you said it switches to that if there's a stronger signal? Like I said, my college has a pretty strong WiFi connection within the building itself, but not so much outside of it...now what I'm wondering is is there any way I could somehow disable it from connecting to whatever network would cost me to use? I mean, is there someway to have it only use WiFi and not the other thing that I would get charged for?

Thanks a lot, the help is really appreciated

You would have to turn on the Wifi option in the Comm Manager (really easy to use UI) and then it will detect all available networks in the area. Then you can select the security enabled or open network and then type in the WEP key. Probably what you do with your college as thats what i do with my university wireless. This will be shown in the top bar of the screen area and is intuitive as if you tap it, it will tell you the network your connected to. The Touch just seems to have a tendency to switch to the EDGE network, which basically is like internet via your cell phone reception. If that happens you will see a little E appear on the reception bars, which is also intuitive and can lead you to the comm manager where you can turn on/off the data connection. As of yet, i've yet to read somewhere on HoFo that tells us how to disable EDGE connection, but if anyone has seen it correct me plz.

Hope this helps a bit, Cheers.

Posted by: I c o n

Ah ok, yes this helps a lot! I am quite sure I am going to purchase this phone now! Thanks!!

Posted by: Slylikeafox87

No problem, HoFo is a place to help each other. Glad to have another Touch user out there lol

Posted by: I c o n

I actually sent Rogers an email asking them the same question, and here was the reply:

Quote:
You may use this phone on a pay aa you go plan but will not have access
to the data features of the HTC phone. You will be bale to use the phone
to make and receive calls but will not have access to push e-mail or
other data package reliant features.

I'm just wondering what he's referring to as "data package reliant features?" I don't really like the idea of not being able to use all features, but I still really want this phone...is it still a good idea for me to buy it?

Posted by: Cosmic Blue

He means internet browsing as pay as go does not include data plan for x mbs unless you want to pay by the kb, which could end up costing you a bundle.. Pay as you go is good for voice as you use up the minutes only.

Data uses mb which are priced and handled different then voice calls.

Yes, as long as when you use data you use wifi feature only.

Posted by: Slylikeafox87

You can still use the internet features as long as your on a Wifi hotspot like your college and maybe home. Thats basically what I do as i find the data packages at Rogers to be junk/expensive. Just stuff like "check email every 15 min" isn't available. Still gets me by on a wifi campus, and i'm still very happy with the phone. Just learn to check on your phone once in a while to see if your on EDGE/Data before trying to open IE.

Sigh, I'll never understand why carriers want to make our lives harder. Oh wait, nevermind. Money.

Anyhoo, I am assuming you would be buying an unbraded HTC Touch, right? This is my setup, maybe it will help.

My boss gave me some v360 phone or something for work. I used it for awhile, then decided to buy an unbranded HTC TyTN II.

So I pretty much put the sim card in the TyTN II and it works fine. I have a $5/5MB per month data plan on top of the little minutes package I get. I think its 3 cents per extra KB you go over.

ANyways, I'm in a wifi area all day, so if i need internet i just turn on my wifi manager and connect, then do what I have to do.

If I am out, I simply go into my pocket outook, or open a browser, and my Data connection connects to the data network. WHen I am done doing what I'm doing, I either disconnect myself, or I have an application from xda-developers.com that times out my data connection after 3 minutes (what I set it to), in case I forget.

None the less, as stated above, if you are on WiFi and all of a sudden your connect is lost and you are using an active internet program, like windows live messenger, your data connection will try and take over.

I have yet to come across a time when I had a wireless lan connection enabled (ANY signal strength) and then it decided to switch to GPRS. This has never happend to me. It only happens if I lose connection completly, and if I was using windows live messenger.

My outlook it set to manual send/receive and i have everythign else set to manual that has to do with getting updatse from the internet.

ANyways, if you are pay as you go i dont know if the data rate is 5 cents or 3 cents a KB, might be 5 cents. An email is usually 4-5 kb.

You ca download data monitor apps to see how much data you have used per month also.

As for Microsoft Direct Push, I think that is a technology that requires yout ohave an active data connection, liek GPRS. I think that's because it needs a consistent address/number to know where you are, so it can push out email to you. If you are on wifi, direct push technology doesn't really know where you "are". Please someone correct this for me if I have it wrong, but I think that is the point of direct push email, it sends mail to you as you get it, so it needs to know where you are, so your phone number/data connection is what does that for you, not a random IP address from a random wireless lan.

There are probably some Rogers media services like video and/music or somethign that you won't be able to access or take advantage of because you are not on a month to month real data plan.

I just use pop email and send/receive manually.

It's available but it's not wise to have it set up to check every 15 minutes if you don't have a data plan, as that would cost you quite a bit!

Lol i was in class when i wrote that, i was meaning to say all you would be missing out on would be checking on your email every 15 min or using your internet anywhere. Good catch briggs81

Get to work!

Work involving the socioeconomic value of grain versus HoFo on wifi via Touch, hard pick eh?

Posted by: trenwei

When I use my touch and setup my gmail account for messaging...does the data from updating my inbox come from wifi? Or does the come from the Rogers data charges?

note: I have stopped all possible data from coming in by changing the internet.com domain.

thanks alot

Posted by: Slylikeafox87

Are you connected to wifi the whole time?

Posted by: trenwei

yeah...just wondering if it can charge me through something other than GPRS (like as texts or something)

Posted by: Hwaiting

I just picked up this phone from Rogers last week and didn't have to sign up with any data plan as I intended to use wifi exclusively.
I noticed in the first few days of use that the phone would switch over to the Edge Network sometimes while on wifi. I'm sure I ended up consuming some data over their network.

I couldn't figure out a way to turn off all EDGE data consumption from the phone so what I did was call Rogers and told them to block all internet so nothing can get through. This only affects GPRS and EDGE for anyone who is interested. Wifi still works. I figure its better to be safe than get my first bill and go

Does anyone know of an alternative way to shut of all Internet via phone settings?

Alternative method via phone settings:

Go to Start --> Settings --> Connections tab at bottom --> Connections button --> "Manage existing connections" under the Rogers Internet section --> Select Rogers Internet and hit Edit --> Next --> Type in any access point name but INTERNET.COM --> Next --> Finish

Then after that anytime the phone tries to connect to GPRS/EDGE it'll say "Remote party disconnected you" or something like that.

Posted by: briggs81

If you set all applications to not automatically do anything that has to do with internet, you won't have any data problems. (weather, gps downloads, outlook end/receive, windows live syncing, etc)

The only time my data connection comes on is when i launch a program that connects to the internet. otherwise it's off.

My data monitor tracks all data usage on all connections and i dont see it going up by itself.

Though i guess if you don't plan on ever using rogers data, then yeah, get it disconnected I guess.

Huh? I use my 621 all over the city, never ever had any problems with my Curve or 7290 either. You sure it wasn't your phone?

Exactly, "the city". You ever step outside of the city with it? Rogers is notorious for bad coverage, ask any skier, parent of kid in hockey rinks just out of Ottawa, cottage people. If I had a nickel for every time a cottager asked to borrow my cell because they were on Rogers.... I could buy out TED!

Posted by: tbrummell

I travel from TO to Ottawa, 401 & 7, frequently in Calabogie as well (thanking Rogers for throwing a tower up on the hill) as well as Cobden and area. Except some spots way off the beaten path, say Black Donald Lake and outskirts I have no problems. There are some grey spots along 7, but they clear up pretty quick. The girlfriends Krazr on the other hand... It has long dead spots along 7. Glad we have the GSM and CDMA technologies covered, cause if one is ever without service the other usually has it.

So ok, I've got another question...I bought the Touch last night on eBay and I should get it in a couple of days. Now, does the Touch support IM? Like, can I be on MSN/Windows Live Messenger while in a WiFi area and talk to my contacts for free? If so, does it come on in as a standard feature (I know the phone has Windows Mobile Professional 6 so I figured there might be a chance) or would I have to somehow install it on there?

Also, I've been reading a lot of reviews and video-overview/explanations of it on youtube and it looks to me like there's an applaunch menu, meaning a menu you can use to quicklaunch some common applications...is it possible to add 3rd party applications to this phone? Like I know the iPhone and the iPod Touch you can download and install third party applications like facebook, google maps, etc...is there any chance of getting away with this on the HTC Touch (without "hacking" the phone)? Thanks!

Posted by: Slylikeafox87

There is MSN/Windows Live Messenger, and it works fine in Wifi areas.

The third party apps, as far as I'm concerned is great as I can dl any .cab file and go to town without hacking anything. Gooo forth and customize my friend.

Posted by: I c o n

I haven't looked into it too much, but you wouldn't happen to have a site/database of available/popular third party applications for the HTC Touch? Just checking.

Another question, I noticed on some of the videos on youtube when the reviewers are taking the phone out of the box, brand new, underneath the phone itself is a 1GB microSD card for the phone...I sent an email to the guy I bought my Touch from and he said he didn't know, but it's brand new in the packaging so if it does come standard it would be included? Just wondering if anyone knows because if it doesn't come with it I'd like to buy a microSD card and hopefully have them both arrive around the same time in the week if possible. Thanks!

Posted by: briggs81

You need to visit this website and do some more reading, which looks like you can handle as you seem to spend some good amounts of time researching!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=372

You can ignore the fact that it says "Elf", it's the same as the Touch. Browsing this website you will quickly learn that devices go by lots of different names, and devices released around the same time are pretty similar to eachother, and after all, it's just windows mobile.

You can pretty much download any apps you want. Developers make install files for them, etc. The stuff I have on my TyTN II you could put on your touch. You can even put a new rom on it to make it faster, as a lot of developers have tweaked roms, apps, etc.

For example, the TyTN II does not come with The cube navigation like the Touch does. Well, after goign to this website, I can either download the cube navigation from HTC that developers have made as a cab file, I can use a Flash/.NEt version of the cube that someone made, or I can use a c++ coded version of the cube navigation, that someoen also made. That place is full of great stuff. I have the touch onscreen keyboard on my tytn II also.

Heck you can even get apps that are mirror apps of iphone apps. Slide to unlock, picture/album viewer, whatever.

None the less, take the time to read through that and read instructions if you go through with any of it, but I'll just say this site has made my tytn II 500% better then what it was out of the box.

Also I don't know much about the sd card thing, who knows if those reviews were the first time it was actually opened it or not, they might just want to give the experience of opening the box for the first time.

Posted by: I c o n

Wow thanks a lot for the link, I look forward to checking into that stuff.

Another quick question, you said you can download the Cube display from the Touch and put it on the TYTN? Let's say I download something (an app, or some kind of mod) and install it on my Touch but I don't like it...is it possible to revert back to the way it was? Or am I stuck with it once I install it? I guess what I'm asking is when you install these types of things does it overwrite the pre-installed things on the phone? Just curious because several of the things you mentioned sounded interesting, but also somewhat sketchy...I just want to be sure that I could remove them/go back if it turned out that I didn't like/want them after all. Thanks again!

I was looking for my free 1GB MicroSD card too when I opened the box in the store with the Rogers guy and asked him. He said that these new ones post December/07 don't have that offer anymore.

Posted by: briggs81

Yes, it's like installing/uninstalling programs on your computer.and developers usually give pretty clear instructions on how to do things and there is always lots of feedback.

Ok, another question..I got my Touch in the mail today, and I've been playing around with it for a few hours and so far I love it.

However I can't seem to figure out how to select a ringtone for incoming text messages? I managed to create a BlueTooth connection to my laptop to transfer a song for my call ringtone, but I just can't seem to find where I can change the sound for text messages? Thanks!

Click on start --> settings --> Sounds and Notifications --> select new sms and then pick the song u put on the phone. Remember to put ringtones for sms in the main folder and not the ringtone folder. Cheers.

Posted by: I c o n

Ok thanks a lot!

Also I have another question (sorry for all the questions...I am very new to this phone but very excited about it!) I was in my college earlier today and I was on my school's wifi connection and I decided to try out the Messenger application that comes with the phone, but I couldn't figure it out...There is a sign in button, and an option to pick signing in as Online, Offline, Away, Busy, etc. but I couldn't figure out how to put in my email address and password? It let me click sign in but it just did the little "signing in" animation forever, and I figured it's because I have to put in my email/password somewhere. How do I get the MSN working? Thanks again!

Also another question I just remembered...I have a song segment set as my ringtone for incoming text messages (it's approximately 30 seconds long)...Anyways, when I get a text message it plays the ringtone, but when I click to read them or delete them or whatever, or just to ignore them, the song continues playing even after I press any of these functions. Is there a way for it to automatically stop playing the ringtone once you select what to do? Also, I would really like to keep using the ringtone I have (I used it on my old RAZR as well and it's great), so I'm not really looking for people to suggest using a shorter sound notification. Thanks!

Posted by: briggs81

after you press sign in it should take a while and then eventually get you into the setup process, it does stall for a bit at first. not sure what else to tell you about that. Otherwise, I don't know. Try doing it on another internet connection if you have access to one, to see if it is the college network that is the problem, or it's just not your day!

I assume you were able to do other internet related things.

and remember to sign out when you are done with that messenger and leaving wifi area.

Posted by: briggs81

In case you are still having trouble with messenger, you should be able to get to the windows live services page in IE and there might be a link to the web version of messenger, see if that works.

Make sure to close Messenger in the task area also to prevent using GPRS, i can't remember if you already disconnected that by changing it from internet.com to fake.com or something like that in Rogers Internet setting, but if you did no need to worry as it won't connect to GPRS, but its just safer to shut down anything that'll try to get on the internet even in a Wifi-less area.

On another note I have the same problem with ringtones for text. I use the song from the pepsi commercial, Newton - Streamline, and its 30 seconds long, and will continue to go for the full time even if replied too, not sure how to fix this one yet, more research needed i guess. Cheers

All HTC's do this (maybe all smartphone's in general), there is no solution that I am aware of. Well, there's 1 solution but you've already mentioned you don't want it suggested.

Posted by: I c o n

Ah..that's unfortunately...well I guess it's not that big of a deal, I either have to accept having to listening to my whole ringtone or change to a shorter sound..but the rest of the phone is great so I can't really complain..anyways I will probably have more questions soon and thanks for all the help so far!

Seems like I have another one already...I notice that the Touch has its own email function separate from SMS/MMS. I have an email account with Google Mail (GMail.com) and I'm wondering if I can somehow setup my phone so that any incoming email messages will also come to my phone as well, in addition to receiving text messages? Thanks!

When you have wifi access go to gmail.com/app on your mobile browser and see if they have an app that supports your phone. I know they do not have one (yet) for my 621.

Yes sorry, my link was to start wtih imap on your pc, then follow links from there to get it on your windows mobile 6 device (link provided above)

Posted by: I c o n

Aha, perfect! Thanks so much!

I notice that when I run several applications like MSN and IE and perhaps a few other tools, the phone seems to be quite slow at processing my requests. Obviously it won't be as fast as a PC because the processor is clearly not as good, but I remember reading someone posting something about downloading things that could possibly make it go faster? Could anyone tell me if this is possible and if so, how? Thanks again!

Posted by: briggs81

All machines slow down when processing a lot.

You can flash the device to a new ROM (operating system) etc, modify keys for reg tweaks, power settings, etc.

You would have to read all that information on the xda-developers.com, they teach you how to flash a device.

I have my tytn ii flashed, really good device now

Posted by: I c o n

Ok another quick question...I bought a 2GB micro SD card for it to hold my music, and I'm wondering if there's anyway that I can transfer songs directly from my computer to the storage card using a USB/BlueTooth connection (when I do this, the songs I transfer go into My Documents and then must be moved to the storage card to make room for more, which takes quite long).

Also I've tried using the adapter into my PC but I seem to be having copy errors when I try to copy my music to it, it'll get halfway through copying and give me some error about not being able to create the file or directory and I don't know what that's about because there's still plenty of space left on the card. Anyways because of this I figure using USB/BlueTooth will be easier but if there was some way I could transfer directly to the storage card instead of the phone hard drive that would much better! Thanks!

Edit: Another question...the reason I'm not doing it via USB is that ActiveSync will never connect my device; the little icon spins around for a minute and then it says it couldn't connect click here to troubleshoot the error but that never does anything. Any ideas?

Posted by: briggs81

The best way to solve activesync issues is to delete the realationship with pc/ppc and start over, just back up your files (rename the folder).

You will have to click around activesync connection settings/tools and make sure that usb checkbox is selected, etc, all the labels are in plain English.,

I don't know what your adapter problem is. Perhaps try copying one song at a time to see if it's a corrupt file.

All my music is synced with my PC. I have all my songs in my My Music/Music folder on PC, and on my storage card i have a folder called music.

I put my microsd card into the adapter then into the pc, open windows media player and set up a sync with the storage card which monitors both folders. This is much easier for me as pc > card adapter is MUCH faster then pc > pda transfer.

ActiveSync can be a real b*tch, and it's made me swear oout loud plenty of times. Just have to click around both the pda (in the connections tab there might be an icon for "usb to pc" for advanced connectivity or something, make sure you have that checked) and the pc.

I had to work through a lot of bugs when I first used Activesync but it seems to have settled down now. I had to delete the relationship also and recreate it.

For songs though, I find using Windows Media Player is so much easier to sync my songs. When the phone is connected, WMP will recognize the phone and you can either choose the internal memory or the storage card to sync your music to. On the Sync tab in WMP, just drag and drop from the WMP library on to the Sync box and then from there its a one click sync. Never had any probs doing it that way.
