WindowsLive.ca I need auto-notification, not manual send/receive.

How does one make new email notifications for WindowsLive (Hotmail) pop up on Touch? I have Live set to check every 5 minutes but it won't download and notify Touch unless I manually hit Send/Receive. I even installed Messenger thinking their intuitive multi-interface would notify me via Messenger running, but no, I have to manually go to Live and click send/receive. These are all M$ products, Microsoft Mobile, IE Mobile, Microsoft Live (built-in interface) so, ya'd think they could talk to each other, eh?

***Edit Yes, The Touch notifies me immediately for emails from my ISP accounts, except for the junk. M$ Mobile seems to filter that right away and not bother to notify you...

You need to pony up $$ for exchange and have them change your reply to to your ca address.

So, I need to buy Microsoft Exchange software and set it up on my Touch. Ok, how much is that (about) hope there won't be an extra monthly fee!

First of all, Exchange is something you most like don't want to buy as it's geared toward companies that deploy it on their email servers and it is very expensive (at least for an individual). In your case you would want to look at a "hosted" Exchange option. This is where a company that is in this type of business handles your Exchange account and you device "synchonizes" with their server. Generally, these require a monthly subscription fee, however, if you are just looking at synching one email account, there are free alternatives out there.

Having said all this, you do not need an Exchange solution to synchronize Windows Live mail. I am using Windows Live, along with Gmail and 3 pop accounts on my Touch without any trouble.

First of all check your option settings. Open 'Messaging' then click on 'Windows Live'. Now click on Menu->Tools->Options. Here, all of your mail accounts should be listed. Click on Windows Live and under 'Sync Options' make sure Sync email box is checked. Then, in 'Sync Schedule', make sure you set the frequency and times to what you need. And lastly, under 'Email', set the file size as required and voila, your ready to sync.

Thanks Slider! The following is what screws me up whenever I see it mentioned. When you mention "sync", do you mean it needs to use Active Sync once, after all those settings are input, and it will be good to go forever?

Sometimes it's unclear to many when people write sync. Does it mean things are working together internally, within the Touch, or for you to actively start an AS.

The short answer is NO. These setting have nothing to do with ActiveSync. The settings I am referring to are telling your device how and when to connect to the Windows Live server to check for and download your email that has been sent to your Windows Live/Hotmail account.

The purpose of synchronizing email using ActiveSync is when you are using a program like Outlook on your computer and you want to have copies of all these emails on your device as well. In this case, you can tell ActiveSync what folders within Outlook you want to keep synchronized and every time you connect your device to your computer (via USB or Bluetooth, depending how you have it set up to sync), those folder synchronize the information between your device and your computer. In this case, you could create an email in Outlook on your device but it wouldn't actually be sent until the next time you synchronize your device with the computer.

The exception to this of course, is if you are using an Exchange server setup. Then Outlook emails are sent and received as if you were working at your computer.

So, to summarize, if you are only looking at being able to send and receive emails and do not require the ability to "synchronize" these emails back and forth between your device and the computer, then you do not require the use of an Exchange server.

Now, with the exception of the first paragraph, the above information refers to using Outlook email. When we talk about Windows Live, the settings I am referring to are for the synchronization of the Windows Live email account you are accessing on your device and the Windows Live servers. So, someone sends an email to your joeblow@live.ca account (or Hotmail address if you still use it). Your device is set up to log on to the Windows Live servers every XX minutes and check for mail. It finds this new email and downloads it to your device. You reply to it and carry on. The next day you are at your computer and you check your Windows Live email. There you can see the mail you received and replied to from your device the previous day (providing you didin't erase it). Conversely, you can also log on to Windows Live from your device and see the same information. This is what is meant by synchronization here.

Hope this helps.
