T-Mobile Wing...an un-biased review

I recently switched from my T-Mobile Trace to the new T-Mobile wing and have been using it for about two months. I consider myself a knowledgeable user of the hardware, but not a guru by any means.

The first thing I noticed was slightly better coverage. I found myself getting about one more bar in areas I wouldn't normally have it in. Sound quality is very good, and Bluetooth connection and reception sounds a tad better, too. There is a plethora of different additions and "hacks" out for it that can further enhance the user's experience.

The QWERTY keyboard takes some getting use to. Typing is easy, but I'm not fond of the "send" button so close to the keyboard because you can accidentally hit send when you're typing which becomes very irritating. I also find no word "learn" to be irritating, because it would be nice to let the system learn various words and phrases, i.e. email addresses, so you don't have to manually enter them each time you want to send an email.

It's definitely not the fastest phone. At 201 MHZ stock, it could use some improvement. Again, though, a few registry changes and some program installations can help speed it up, by both overclocking it and changing the pool size. There are even basic versions of the WM6 OS available that are directed towards speed and not flashiness.

The touch screen is precise and accurate. The only issue is if you have fat fingers, using the touch screen can be annoying; especially the start menu screen. Again, though, this can be rectified by downloaded an addon that will increase the size which makes it easier to use digits to press them as opposed to the stylus.

The back cover comes off too easily, in my opinion. It seems like any time the phone is in my pocket and I take it out after a while of walking, the back cover has almost come undone and I need to slide it back down.

There aren't a lot of text messaging features and vibration, in my opinion, is too weak. My Trace use to vibrate the hell out of my phone when I received a new text message and that was very convenient when the phone is on silent and in my pocket. The Wing's vibration is significantly weaker.

It's rather bulky. Yeah, it's small for a smartphone, but these are annoying to carry around in pants' pockets. It fits in winter coats OK but it's quite a bulky phone from what I'm use to. This is just a preference issue as I know even the Blackberry phones are larger than this. I prefer not to use a carrying case for it because I think people wearing those look ridiculous, as they're clipped to the person's pants.

Overall I enjoy the phone. I like being able to save music, movies and pictures on my MicroSD card so I can show people anything I want on-the-fly. I like the sound quality, the ease of program and system tweaking and the ability to surf the web effectively and with ease.

I'm not very pleased with the vibration levels, the processor speed, the rear cover and the text send button so damn close to the keyboard. Other than that, everything else that drives me nuts can be changed with a few changes that can be found on the XDA Developer forum.
