I have just completed the k790a to k810 conversion via cnn conversion kit

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: cleric808

Well, i've been following this thread and i first want to thank everyone for the info provided by your experiences.

I ordered that special conversion k800 to k810 piece that has the k810 mobo, lcd frame and middle plate (and the k810 housing as well).

Taking apart the phone and swapping parts was pretty simple, but be cautious with the cover switch on the camera, i broke it by accident and now the slide won't activate the camera on. Not too big of a deal but will fix it later.

Anyway, the verdict....

The project is not a complete flush fit (as some of you had mentioned). The area where space is very limited is located near the m2 slot and right at the top. There is a very little space, not huge but you can notice it. Without modifying the rear cover it if very off. I had to dremel some areas out to make it fit better.

I must say that it does look nice, and i love the fact that the slider is inside so no accidental camera activations will occur. It feels much slimmer than the k790a casing.

I'll post up pictures in a bit...

If anybody has questions i'll be glad to help.

hi,

congrats on your successful mod. can you specify which parts i should cut off when doing this mod? and i'm guessing you got the sony ericsson logo from the battery cover of your k790 right? it looks good.

if you don't mind then can you take pictures of your phone where it is not flush? i just want to see how noticeable it would look.

thanks

Posted by: cleric808

thanks,

yeah sure, i'm going to take some detailed up close pics in a bit with my slr.
For the back, i'll do my best to show you.

Posted by: qwertb

let me know which parts i should cut off.

thanks, i'm looking forward to the pics.

Wirelessly posted (HP HX2495b and/or SE K790a: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

on second phase (after I received K810 parts), will use liquid paper to point out the difference, and also prepare video (from camcorder with tripod) how to disassemble K790a, and how to put onto K810 housing
btw, it appears SE will release K818a/c/i

Wirelessly posted (HP HX2495b and/or SE K790a: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.1; U; en-us) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413 es61)

I finally got the kit
but I found I lost the earpiece from K790!!! And LCD is scratched!
I took pics on every step when assemble from old to new (including the tiny metal piece near the connector, which works as bt antenna)
so sad I lost the earpiece...

Posted by: qwertb

that sucks about the earpiece... sorry for your loss. did you have to cut any pieces off of anything to do the conversion? and was it a flush fit?

when will you be able to post up your pictures? i am really looking forward to them

Posted by: ThorBlaze Dragon

finally found the earpiece
the assembly is kinda difficult, the motherboard support plate is kinda poor quality, that makes the inner part gets 0.5mm thicker, that is pretty hard to close
took pics, will post later
the procedure:
remove every single part from the old unit, MAKE SURE you remove the little motor (the green thing) and little metal piece (bt antenna)
put the outer screen window on the black frame first (and install 2 buttons on the top of window, you can use whatever to cover the front cam hole), and put the metal frame to tighten up the window and keypad buttons, and put the earpiece on the black frame
install the parts on the motherboard support, it's recommended to install the little metal piece first, that you can use krazy glue to keep it in place, and let the glue dry
put the flash assembly and the motor on the place, you may want to cut the motor part a bit to make final closing easier
keep the shield plate removed for the cam assembly, put the motherboard on the new support plate, insert the jack first (you see a hole next to the connector, that helps to keep motherboard in place
put LCD on the new frame, you may want to cut the left bottom (where is the internet button located) a bit, do not put the LCD yet, plug the keypad first, then LCD, and put the LCD, then keypad, and you can install joystick assembly
now you can put the motherboard frame with LCD installed onto the front frame (make sure the LCD and the window are free of dust, you may want to use suede wipe and dust-off
tighten up the torx on antenna location ONLY, then close it with the back, make sure the cam cover is closed, it's a little bit tight to close, you may want to cut the memory slot a bit that you can take the memory card out easily
then tighten up the rest of screws, torx on the bottom, plus on the middle
put the battery on, and you should be able to use the phone again

Posted by: cleric808

AND TO ADD ON FIRE DRAGAN'S POST (he actually helped me with this):

For the blue tooth antenna; It's gonna look like a thing flat piece of metal with two prongs (looks like a Y) make sure you have contact with these prongs and the board. On the board you will see two square silver contacts on the corner next to the charging port. If you notice a range problem with your bluetooth then the antenna is not set correctly.

Looks good. Im gonna order me one...

Do the Martin Fields screen protectors for the 790/800 fit the 810?

Posted by: cleric808

I'm not too sure about the martin fields protectors. the K810's screen actually runs all the way up to the two screen buttons on the top.

Posted by: MP

bahhh... That means new screen protector too....

Is the K810i protector the same as the K790 one? or are they diff?

it would be really nice if the screen protector for K810i has pre-cut holesfor the A/B gaming buttons, that would make centering it a lot easier

K790/800 screen protector is smaller than K810/818

Finished the mod last night, in the wee hrs of the morning, all I can say is what a painstaking chore! I'll post pics later

Anything break or have any close calls? Any tips?

Posted by: ThorBlaze Dragon

if you realize this
the LCD of K800 is thicker than K810
just put K790 LCD will make the machine thicker

Posted by: slim724

mine fits, but yes there was some housing tweaking, not fun, especially when I was almost done dropped the phone onto hard floor everything exploded, had my latex gloves off because I stopped for a smoke break, and I touched the LCD and inner housing, and had to clean everything thoroughly before reassembly

Posted by: MP

ha latex gloves.. I never thought of that b4...

Posted by: slim724

Thanks to shoalinmonk for the original idea!

overall it's a decent kit, everything works, I just wish that it was a little higher quality, the lines just aren't as tight as OEM, but not bad, you can find an instructional video tutorial on cnn.cn, and more pics of other peoples mod here on HoFo, I took pics of parts of the swap that I haven't seen posted about, well at least some, and as it got later into the night, I just wanted to finish and forgot to take pics of some things

the kit

my working area and tools

the 850mhz antenna

the K790 is really thin without LCD, keyboard, and flash assembly

the bluetooth antennae, it is murder to remove without damaging it

I ended up breaking apart the bottom of the K790 middle plate to remove it safely, and it's just as hard to place in the K810 middle plate, as it was removing it, you just need patience!

all of the foam seals in the K790 are high quality, and removable if you do it carefully, it is highly suggested to use all of them, from around the backspeaker, camera module, the 2 small ones to hold the capacitators snug, LCD foam inlay, and around the mic

they fit nicely on the K810 pieces

I took apart the K790 frame to remove the earpiece self sticking dustscreen and cut a piece to use on the new LCD cover

I have some spare W810 parts, and cut a piece of the W810 metal backspeaker grill, and superglued it to the backside of the K810 front camera hole then glued the SE symbol to it, as I saw someone else do this mod and it doesn't look half bad

put it all back together

and I had this buckle/gap in the housing

so I removed the metal trim that goes around the LCD and keypad, it is held onto the silver trim piece by 6 tabs, I slightly bent all 6 tabs outward, away from the phone and snapped it back together, after that it was nice and tight, sorry no pics of that one, it was late I was tired and really just wanted to finish

finished product

it is fairly solid and tight with no creaks, I'm lovin the size of it, it is lighter, and easier to text with IMO, the front is a greasy fingerprint magnet, the back is rubbery like the K790a

some size comparison pics

all pics taken with N95

Posted by: MP

all the speakers still just as loud? It looks like the ear piece speaker hole is a little smaller?

I really like the back cover.. Mine is always getting hooked on my pocket...

I just checked and the earpece hole is a hair smaller, and I think it might not be as loud, but i'm not sure, I'm using the modded pedrops zapf acoustics driver so it's still loud enough

Posted by: ThorBlaze Dragon

finally, I got mine completed
got a broken K800i, removed LCD and cam out, and put in my K790a, and complete the assembly, mine is in ivory
it has tiny gap on the side, the earpiece sounds smaller, the phone feels lighter
the special part: remove the joystick cap from K800, and cut off the joystick cap from K810, that the joystick control is alot easier now

Posted by: Bobblot

Ive done to conversion too, but I'm really have trouble getting the bluetooth to work again, I just cant seem to get the antenna to stay in place. So the only way to get the bluetooth working is to put it right next to the bluetooth dongle on the pc for it to find my phone. Anyone got any tips on how to keep the antenna in place?

Posted by: slim724

pry both prongs that touch the PCB upward more, make sure the antenna hole is firmly sunk down onto the small plastic nipple, and at the other end, I bent the small plastic tab against the flat end of the antenna against it to hold it better, it took me like 20mins to seat it properly, I had some real trouble with with mine, if all else fails for you, there is always superglue, just make sure the prongs touch the PCB!

Posted by: Bobblot

Ok cool, ill give it ago tomorrow and let you know how it goes. I was thinking about putting super glue there but i was worried that it might damage the antenna in someway.

Posted by: MP

just dont get super glue on the part that touches the main board.

no, it won't
apply a little bit on the very right side of the metal piece (you note a little plastic to hold the metal piece)
this is recommended to do it on the first step once the motherboard support is removed to give time to let the glue dry
before finalize your job, you should turn your phone on once, MAKE SURE everything works properly (bt, keypad, cam, LCD) before putting the memory card cover (this is hard to remove, right?)
the pic on my sig shows my K790a in K810 housing, this is not easy even good in DIY
if K818i is quad-band EDGE, I'll shell out money and buy (can I install K790i fw in it?)

Posted by: Bobblot

Thanks guys, i've got the bluetooth working again. I didn't need the super glue i just got it to lay into place after reading what slim724 wrote. Mind you it did take about 15 minutes to get it right.
I'm surprised that cnn didnt offer a K818i housing. I never really thought of it before as i'm in the Uk and have a K800i but it must be a bit of a pain getting around the video call camera at the top.

Thanks to you all for your help.

Posted by: ThorBlaze Dragon

my mod is finalized
I remove the little metal piece from motherboard support again, and solder directly onto PCB (note, the one on the edge SHOULD NOT BE soldered, and should be isolated
after that, the bt reception is greatly improved
finally my K790a becomes K818a

one more thing, I used back the joystick cap for K810, because the one for K800 makes the joystick too sensitive

Posted by: wpg204

Nice work Fire. So this means you can put the k790 joystick cap mod on?

Posted by: RLP06

I got a K810i housing, but I'm pretty scared to do this...

I dont want to swap the middle plates... is it doable without modding the middle plates or impossible?

the pic in my sig testify that
however, the joystick gets too sensitive, that I put K810 cap now

Posted by: mrweiser

I just finished this mod and I have to say I am very pleased with the result. I bought a full conversion kit from "ubuy mobile uk" on Ebay. It came with everything that was needed including the LCD. Turns out the LCD was faulty so I just used my old one. It was still cheaper than buying it from cnn.cn. I definitely like the new look better than the old one. @RLP06- it is not possible to do without swapping the middle plates, but if you take your time and be careful with the ribbon cables it's not as bad as you think.

I also got the gold housing from them, but the bottom and battery cover don't match well

Posted by: wpg204

i have just finished this mod, does anyone know why the blue lights on the keys 1 4 7 and *, dont light up blue?

thanks

Posted by: slim724

sounds like maybe the ribbon cable isn't plugged in all the way, or bad keypad LED's, I would definitely unplug the keypad ribbon cable and inspect both connectors on PCB and cable, use a magnifying glass if you have to, and look for bent/broken contacts, if all seems fine, realign and plug in firmly and securely, if it still doesn't work after that, return it for a new one

I had similar problem...
you may notice 2 tiny brown piece on both side of joystick hole
if you have soldering iron (no more than 30 watts, M U S T B E pen type tip)
dip the metal part on both tiny brown bricks (they're capacitors) with little amount of thin, high quality solder
after that, it's fixed on mine

Posted by: wpg204

Thanks guys, ill give that a try tomorrow.

Posted by: wpg204

Got it to work!

Thanks everyone!!!

Here are some pictures of the completed swap.

what does "processing" mean, i ordered parts about 5 days ago and they're still "processing". does it ever say "shipped"?

i've tried emailing them but nothing back from them yet...i'm worried.

Mine was in processing for like a week

After that it will say shipped, but it take me 2 weeks and a half to get it. It was stuck in Vancouver customs for a little over a week.

lol it turned out things were slow because their office was closed - chinese new year.

i got an email today from them, they seem like a good place to do e-business with.

I was going to order one, but I cant find it on cnn.cn any more?

Posted by: mrweiser

They may be out, but if you don't mind Ebay I can highly recommend this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Original-Housin...1QQcmdZViewItem It's a little bit cheaper than cnn.cn considering it comes with an LCD as well. I ended up not using that LCD on mine cuz there was a problem with it, but overall I was very happy with the end result. The housing and parts (except for the LCD I guess) are very high quality.

Posted by: MP

how much were they on cnn.cn? seems like they were less than that? (65.99)..

I got LOTs of LCD's! Dont need extras lol...

The middle plate is part of the 19.99 conversion kit. You have to buy the housing separately (42.99).

Posted by: shenaniganz08

Order Date: Monday 11 February, 2008
02/21/2008 Shipped

Products
1 x SonyEricsson K800i to K810i upgrade kit $19.99
1 x SonyEricsson K810i OEM Noble Blue full housing $42.99
1 x T5 screwdriver $3.00

Sub-Total: $65.98
Regular airmail (Regular airmail ( 7-10 days ) - US $5.00): $5.00
Total: $70.98

Someone said that the k800 uses T5 screw ( i had a t6 driver that didnt work) so i ordered one

I'll be posting tons of pics+ any modifications needed ( either dremel, dust shield, double sided tape, etc) but hopefully its straight foward.

Posted by: MP

ooooohhhhh

I get it.... I thought it was all in one package...

Posted by: mrweiser

The only real modifications I had to do was trimming out the backplate to fit the capacitors better. Everything else I left alone. The M2 slot doesn't line up perfectly, but it's good enough to still use without trimming on it. Make sure you screw the pcb assembly to the faceplate before you put the backplate on. Also it's easier to fit the metal trim piece to the faceplate before you assemble the phone. These are just the few small issues I ran into. If I'm leaving anything out somebody else please chime in.

Posted by: xoxota999

I'm a little confused (or maybe just dense): Do I need a k810 LCD, or will my existing k790 LCD work? I got the kit from CNN, jsut waiting on a housing, but I basically do NOT want to even crack my 790 if I don't know whether this thing's gonna work (in addition to being dense, I'm also a chicken. And cheap )

Posted by: mrweiser

The K790 LCD works just fine. I believe the actual K810 LCD is a little thinner, but it's not needed.

Posted by: shenaniganz08

i heard the screens are the same, its just the plastic behind the lcd that is different

damn Chinese new years, im still waiting on my order.

Posted by: shenaniganz08

Man F^^CK This SH!!I!T They Forgot My Middle Plate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT TOOK A MONTH AND THIS HAPPENS !!!

i officially hate these people now

how do i get in contact with them

did you order the conversion kit or just the housing?

do you think the earpiece is weaker after mod?
I could barely hear in the earpiece
copied the audio driver, limited improvement
and the phone is given away, thanks to somebody provided GDFS mod, now realplayer is no longer working...

if your referring to the quad band mod.. your right it does not work.. it looked good tho. I tried it too and had the same "no network" problem. Others on other forums still argue that it works (but they are wrong)

Just restore the GDFS from a backup (thats what I did)

I still dont understand the realplayer no longer works thing... Are you referring to streaming? Mine NEVER streamed content as AT&T and cingular BLOCKS that port on there servers preventing you from using up there bandwidth if your not on 3g.

I feel bad for offering a GDFS patch that didn't work, BUT and time I tell some one to mess with the GDFS I ALWAYS say to make a backup.. (just restore that and phone should be back to the same)

yes, streaming is no longer working
about real on att, I tried W580 at att store, BBC worked.....
but I don't know is it MEdia Net or else
btw, I should grab S500i or W830i, but I'd prefer S500i

sending a pm just for you to look at... Dunno if it will help..

BTW-- Streaming really did never work on ATT (for me) with w810 or k790 never tried it on 580 tho.

housing + conversion kit

I ended up just having to gut ( and i use that term conservatively ) my old k800i housing

oh and not only that the screen that they sent me was already scratched..... this company is lame @___@

ill post pics when i get my other camera

oh the headphone audio is a bit weaker, but that only because the heaphone speaker is semi blocked now ( the new opening is slightly lower)

still with all the gutting I did the phone feels much lighter... but it does have its flexing here and there

that would be me that said that, mine splits a little everytime I drop it, but all you have to do is snap it back together, it is nowhere near the build quality of OEM K790a, and I tweaked every seam and tab to make it fit tighter with no gaps anywhere, but it is much lighter, more pocketable and sleek looking

yup....

but on the other hand bluecalx (spelling?) said the red one was good?

all the red ones are missing the rubber plug for the external antenna next to the flash, it's like there's no red rubber in china!

Also, if you will be disappointed if it's not as solid as the K790a then don't get one

Mine is really solid guys. I feel like I could chunk this thing across the room with no problems. Where does yours come apart? I do think the earpiece was a lot quieter after the build. It wasn't all that loud before. I put the W880 audio drivers on and that helped out the sound overall, but didn't completely fix the earpiece. Then I put in the "Peter's EXTREME Loud Call Fix". I now have my earpiece volume on 4 for most calls and I can still hear it pretty comfortably at 2.

I think about to get K818
but after reading the spec, this is a major turndown
1. no 850 variation
2. no EDGE (big deal for me)

wow talk about a mis-post

lol.. ya I guess so...
It happens...

Any idea on how to fix a broken camera switch? Is it that tiny little lever that protrudes from the side of the shiny metal piece under the capacitors?

Also, if I do not purchase a new LCD, will the k790a lcd cause the front plate to stick out a bit since it's lcd is a little thicker and thus require more hacking of the housing to have a snug fit?

Posted by: MP

yes it is that little lever.

Posted by: MP

I dunno how you would fix it other than replacing it?

Posted by: ThorBlaze Dragon

I have another cam flash assembly, which is from broken K800i (not sure whether it works or not)
or just check cnn.cn

hmm strange i got email notification but the post isnt here,

use a screwdriver to turn the swicth to always open

i broke my swicth a few months ago

the phone really doesnt care if its "always open" the way you get into the camera is by holding down the camera button

to leave the camera mode just use the back button

its not worth the cost of replacing the switch to be honest

two of these

may I ask why 2 ??

i might have an extra bracket in a bit.. ill hit you up

im really considering this... my k790a is chipped in a couple places from being dropped, and i accidently dropped superglue on the outside screen (no screen protector, im an idiot). I was going to replace with a k800 kit, but this one looks so much sexier.

before I order...should i get the Ebay kit, or the CNN.cn kit?

also, anyone know where i can get a spare SE logo to put in the video camera spot?

The SE logo comes off of the K790 battery cover. I don't think it really matters where you get the kit from. I'm pretty sure that cnn.cn ships faster though.

hmm does anyone know where i purchase a K810i or K800i housing in person in toronto ?

Posted by: happyponcho42

I purchased the upgrade kit from cnn.cn and the housing from gsm4world.us. Both took exactly 7 days to get here from Hong Kong.

My original housing purchase was off of eBay but after waiting a full week, I received the item which turned out to be super low quality. The housing did not even close properly, and the buttons were not real. They were just pieces of plastic that look like buttons with not rubber attachment on the back to push down on the actual phone keyboard.

After receiving the gsm4world housing, I finished the conversion and it looks awesome. Nothing too hard, just patience.

A tip for those trying to remove the bluetooth antenna, it comes off real easily, no need to snap the old casing or do anything drastic. You'll see that the antenna is held down by a little plastic nipple from the case (you'll notice a black dot on the gold antenna). Just get an extra fine .5mm pen and push down on the black nipple while pulling the antenna up with tweezers. Comes cleanly off and just as easy to snap back into the new case.

I did the conversion about a month...spent about $70 for everything at cnn.cn. Honestly, I don't think it was worth it, I regret wasting that 70 bucks. I swap everything over just fine, everything works. It's just the housing doesn't close all the way, and the black trimming on the sides are not flush. I'm a perfectionist and it's an eye sore. I'm prolly gonna sell this thing off soon, hopefully I'll make my money back.

Posted by: vr0om

question to those who have done the housing swap. after the swap i notice that the buttons dont light up correctly right ? mainly the camera short cut keys for the camera new the 1,4,7,* keys. is there anyway to fix that ? thanks

Posted by: mrweiser

Mine light up just fine. Where did you get your conversion kit from? Did it come with the actual membrane keypad?

Posted by: MP

I think you have to use the k810 keyboard part like said b4.. I havnt done it yet, but I think that some one else had that issue back in this thread.

Posted by: shenaniganz08

yeah mines works fine

the only thing is the blue camera icons are always lit up

Posted by: raysacr

everything works fine on mine. keypads and camera icons all are working properly. off when not in used, and on when the camera is activated.

Posted by: breathe
