What are the best GSM WiFi phones in the market now?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: cleanvibe

Any thoughts??

Posted by: JonnyBruha

What do you mean? Usually when a phone has WLAN, that's it. There's not really a way to rate them unless you go by range or features, but even then the difference is marginal.

Or are you asking what's the best GSM phone on the market right now that happens to have WLAN?

Posted by: RogerPodacter

any nokia s60 N Series phone is the best wifi gsm phone.

Nokia N95-3, future N95 8GB NAM, and iPhone IMO...

Posted by: braindead5400

iPhone
TyTn II/Kaiser/Tilt (as long as you use opera, some people hate ie)
N95/N82

Posted by: jontymisra

There's way 2 many out there.
E90/N95/N82/E51 etc etc.

Also, HTC has a few phones too

The iphone. End of thread.

The iphone is the best WiFi phone ever made. The best web browser, largest screen and nicest screen. It is as close as you can come to desktop browsing. Everything else is crap.

Hope this helps.

Posted by: jontymisra

^^ That was a good laugh, havent seen those posts in a while.

Download a file from a website with it. My desktop also doesn't take 3 minutes to load Howard Forums over wifi.

+1

My n95 makes my iphone look exactly like what it is. A glorified ipod touch with a crappy phone function slapped on it. There are things i love about the iphone but bringing it up in a discussion of best phones is comical.

What's crappy about the phone function on the iPhone? How would you rate the call quality both incoming and outgoing for a quad band?

Voice quality, signal strength, and etc...

One of the things people don't mention about 3g nearly as often as the speed of it is voice clarity and signal strength. Dont get me wrong I'm not flaming the iPhone there are some aspects of it that I really do like, but the signal strength and clarity of calls is average at best compared with say, a N95 or Tilt.

Back to the original topic of wifi browsing phones, JonnyBruha mentioned the key thing that, to me at least, trumps the iPhone, and that's the ability to download an image or file from the browser. And to take it further, try saving a pic or attachment from email on the iPhone. Not happening. Also, those "viewmymessage.com" SMS messages you get that tell you that you've received a MMS. You get some silly code to enter, but you have to flip back and forth between safari and the message to make sure you've entered the code correctly...just so you can access your picture message. And don't even think about saving that picture or enlarging it from the thumbnail size pic they give you to view!

There are many definiciencies on the iphone that make the above statement about the iPhone being the best period, end of thread blah blah blah post laughable.

That said as much as those things bother me, I eagerly anticipate iPhone version 2. Although I'm very loyal to Nokia after having an N95 as my first Nokia experience and will never go back to a phone that has me locked to a contract, I would buy iPhone v2 if they correct the ridiculous omissions from the first version.

oops..double post. sorry!

The iPhone in my opinion is the best wifi device.

Posted by: jontymisra

^^ Justify it.

Because it destroys all other smartphones in browsing experience.(Including Opera mini & WM) Email is rendered just as it is on desktop in TRUE html format, not minaturized like all other smartphones(Nokia, WM6 included), best built in video streaming with YouTube and superior screen for media viewing. And that's just wi-fi, there are alot more reasons why it is a overall great device. Not the best phone and it has limitations but makes up for it with many stregnths.

It's pretty hard to click on a link if your don't have some kind of virtual pointing device on the screen. Every time you go into a web page, the process is always:

Zoom
Zoom
Click
Zoom
Zoom
Click

The S60 web browser not only gives you a great desktop-like experience, it is also easy to click on links with one hand and zoom in if your want to, all with out having to devote all of your time and energy on the device. And no saving pictures on your device locally

Oh, and there is no desktop web browser that lets me pinch, zoom, flick, grab, toss, or swirl... at least none that I know of, but there are many that let me use a virtual cursor to select links, kinda like the S60 and Opera Mini browsers. So wouldn't that make them more desktop like than the iPhone?

Just a thought.

Can I view any website with Flash??? Can I download/save an image on a website? Can I copy and paste? Can I save attachment from email?

Everyone knows there is no flash etc. Still better than the other options.(WM6, S60, Garnett, Opera Mobile) Opera mobile I'd say is the second best but not a close second.

Posted by: JonnyBruha

Best for viewing. Interacting with web sites or actually using the web to fulfil any purpose other than viewing is non existant. As others have pointed out, no downloading files, no uploading files, no saving pictures from websites, no copy and paste, and a small amount of integration with the other apps on the phone itself. It's a fantastic web browser, but it doesn't even register as a desktop experience.

Like others said the "N" line from Nokia is great.

Posted by: Elfreshcuh

All iPhone Super Lovers are biased
iPhone is cool for a browser but i use my tytn mostly

iPhones brower is nice however loading is slow, the UI of it is great

Posted by: jontymisra

Iphone users need to accept the fact that Iphone is not a real phone, but an Ipod touch with a crippled phone slapped on it.

Posted by: RogerPodacter

i would say the s60 browser on the n95 is excellent. and its way better than iphone in terms of function. and it looks great too.

its funny how the iphone fanboys tout the iPhone as the greatest phone yet it can't do half what the N95 can. their only retort is, we all know the iphone cant do this and that, but the web looks the best on safari. ha! sure it looks the best, but like Jonny said, it's good for looking but nothin else. I'm a mac guy but my loyalty to Apple cannot get me to like having a half ***** overpriced phone shoved down my throat just because it's apple.

Posted by: RogerPodacter

well i would LOVE apple and their products if they were open. i just dont like locked policies. i dont like that steve jobs doesnt want safari to download a song, or view flash, or send multiple text at the same time, or record video. you get my point. iphone is a nice device though, but no match for a smartphone in terms of capability.

Posted by: DukeL

All that said I would never take a N95 over a iPhone. Those things came out like a year ago. I remember seeing them in the shops ages ago and they weren't interesting then and certainly aren't interesting now. You see nokia scrambling to make a iPhone like device with a touchscreen, you don't see apple hurrying to make a thick feature/smart phone with a numeric keypad. I'm not at all a apple fanboy but I'd have to say Apple wins here.

Posted by: JonnyBruha

Of course they won't. If they built a device that has everything, they'd never be able to milk its sales with minor feature updates over time to make its projected sales numbers. If they built an open device that can download files and send them freely, it would take money out of their pockets. At the end of the day, Apple's goal is still to make money, and everybody who thinks they're riding the touchscreen wave of the feature locked future is willing to pay top dollar for it.

Apple may have one the ignorant US market, but they have a long way to go before complete assimilation.

Posted by: RogerPodacter

i'm not of the opinion that the n95 is thick or clunky. anyone who has held one in their hand would realize how tiny the n95 is. same size as the n75 with the flip closed. now GSP, 5MP camera and all the other stuff it has, in that size of a device, is one huge engineering victory. when the iphone can even record video, then we can talk about what manufacturers want to mimick.

It's only hit the US market the way apple planned. It's most definitely not going to happen outside USA/North America.

I don't know why people keep telling me that. Did I ever insist otherwise? Still, it probably will become popular once the 3g version is released.

Posted by: jontymisra

Iphone is too locked down, people dont understand this concept. People in US are okay with locked phones with proprietary stuff on it, not the rest of the world. Sure, 3G might be an issue too, but lack of features (dont want to list them over and over again) might not appeal others. claiming Iphone winner seems a bit incorrect.

Posted by: JonnyBruha

The markets outside of the US aren't complaining about slow data speeds. It's everything else that's causing it to fail in comparison.

Posted by: jontymisra

^^ Quite correct.

Yea but it looks really cool! And all the cool kids are buying them! And the ipod is good! And if people dont like the features its missing they should have done their research! And EDGE really does load faster than 3g. 3g is overrated anyhow! Why? Because steve jobs says so! Mms? Who needs it? I can try to remember the carrier all my friends and associates have and pray i remember the email domain for that carrier! iPhone is the best!

It would be hilarious if the first iPhone to have 3/3.5G is only 2100!

Dont see that happening. ATT was the one who leaked the 3g iphone rumor. They most likely will get any new iphone product first. It would be funny though!

That's what always kills me with these unlocked phones.

To the OP:

If you want web-browsing experience, I strongly believe that nothing can compare to the iPhone - at least, at this moment. I'm not an apple fanboy.. if anything, I'm a Nokia "fanboy" (symbian 3rd to be more exact ). However! Apple, being the generic corporate ***holes that they are, refine your "freedom" by not allowing you to download ANYTHING with the safari browser. No audio (of course not), no video, no IMAGES, no texts, nothing. Why? Probably because they want you to purchase anything through iTunes.

But, if you don't mind that, the iPhone offers a very user-friendly, sleek, super-quick, 16.7 mil colour, and not to mention large, and fun web browsing.

However, if you want uncontrolled freedom on the net, I strongly suggest some of the newer Nokia S60 3rd devices such as the N95-3, N95 8GB, N82, etc... They have enough RAM power to make your web-browsing experience fast and efficient.

Hope that helps.
