dialing alphabetic phone numbers on a Pearl

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Since the Pearl has it's own keypad layout, the number pad for dialing calls doesn't correspond to a typical phone keypad with 2 being ABC for example. This makes it hard to dial numbers such as 1-800-GO-FEDEX when a numeric number isn't given as well. Does anyone have a solution to address this? I'm not sure if other Blackberry's also have this problem or not. Thanks

Hold down the ALT key and type the word out, once you place the call the letters will be automatically converted into their numerical equivalent.

Note also that when entering text this way the phone reverts to multitap mode. Using your 1-800-GO-FEDEX example you'd have to hit [1] [8] [0] [0] *Hold ALT now* [5] [.] [4] [4] [1] [4] [1] [@] [@]

The alpha dialing features are explained in your BB user manual as well.

I had the same question but when entering the letters, every other letter seem to double, for example 1-800GOFEDEX displays as 1-800-GGOFFEDDEX.

This only seems to happen when dialing numbers with 2 letters per key. I can dial M and L just fine. An help would be appreciated. I've searched all around but can't find a fix to this issue.

I had that same problem when I used to use the BlackBerry Pearl, it all started after an OS update and I had read that others who loaded that same OS also encountered the double letter problem. I changed devices then so I don't know if the double letter issue was resolved in a future OS update or not.

Unfortunately the issue is still present on the latest ATT software ( v4.2.1.96, platform 2.30.78).

I may try another software version from another vendor, gotta do some research.
