Week 39 phone with no service problem

I am trying to help my friend unlock his phone. Only problem is that we don't really know exactly what was done to the phone. I'm not sure whether the phone was originally a 1.0.2 or a 1.1.1 firmware. Number one mistake he did was take it to Pmall. Went to two different stores and they couldn't unlock the phone. There is no message saying invalid sim, so that would appear that the phone indeed is unlocked. But anyways, I virganized it using i.unlock.no and then restored the phone back to 1.1.1 (that's what was on there when he gave the phone to me), jailbreaked it and used anysim to unlock the phone. Anysim said that it was successful and for a split second I saw the edge icon pop up and then promptly disappear with the phone saying no service.

As a last ditch effort I'm going to virganize it again and then downgrade it to 1.0.2 and see what happens than. I have a feeling that the ppl in Pmall did a good number on the baseband and the phone might be too far gone now...LOL

Anyone ever run into a problem like this before? I have unlocked quite a few OTB 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 without a hitch. But this one isn't OTB after Pmall touched it...
