Extracting AIM program from W580i's ATT(R7AC001) FS

Ive been looking at debranding my W580i for quite some time. At one point I actually did debrand but then I found out you lose the AIM that comes with the ATT FS/Cust pack. So my question to everyone is:

Is it possible to extract the AIM program from the ATT FS and possibly install it once the phone is debranded? or create your own customized FS with the same AIM functionality in it?

the reason I ask this is becuase the AIM program charges instant messages as text messages and not as data. I do not have an unlimited data plan and so the AIM feature comes in handy as I do have 400 text messages.

I currently have a ATT branded W580i.

I really thought that over when I debranded my phone yesterday or when ever. Well I did loose aim and I haven't found anyone that put aim back on their phone. But I did find out that AIM, you can upload your mobile phone number to aim and it will forward all the messages to your phone with only using text messages. You can't see your buddy list or anything but you can reply to aim messages. I began to understand what people were talking about when they said debranding is worth it, even because you loose aim...DEFINATELY worth it

I understand, and I know debranding does make alot of features otherwise not available to you work. I would still rather find a way to get the ATT Messenger program onto a debranded phone before I actually go ahead with the debranding.

bump- Id still like to see if anyone could attempt to solve this problem or give some more insight on how if at all would this be possible

I am not sure but you might be able to use FAR+SEFP to extract the program.

Worth a shot.

would anyone be willing to try this?

err .... any luck on this issue? I think this is stopping alot of people from unbranding their phones.

Not possible.

But you can modify the ATT custpack to remove the customization and then flash it back. Or modify the ATT custsomization in-situ, using XS++ or FAR manager to remove or replace startup/shutdown, games, themes, ring/sms tones, or load a Cutomize_Upgrade.xml to enable ringtone playback, data counter, flash themes, tech-mode etc.

If you load a new customize_upgrade.xml would the menu icons remain the same with all the ATT branded icons? or would those be disabled and normal SE icons would show up.?

Also what is tech-mode?

Tech mode is an informative little menu on your phone that will give you some info on your network, phone, etc...I don't know that much about it but it's interesting at least.

There are, of course, tons of ways to mod your phone without flashing and debranding it, like using a customize_upgrade.xml and such, but it is so many times easier to just flash it that it is unrealistic to think that it is a viable alternative for most people. But this provides a solution to the little things that you want to get around like keeping the AIM program.

I have no idea how to mod the ATT custpack. In fact I'd really like to get ahold of that custpack, and FS and MAINs from ATT as a backup. But I haven't found any of that available.

Tech mode tells you what frequency range(1900/850)/channel/tower you are on, what other channels are available etc.

Customize_upgrade.xml will only change what little thing you tell it to change. it's in plain text and easily understandable by anyone who can program a VCR (i.e. somewhat technically inclined).

topsony has most custpacks and FS. You can extract any java apps from the custpack, and FS (using main2raw and SEFStool). However I am pretty confident that the AIM application is fully embedded (like TracID) and cannot be extracted.

There is virtually no risk with customize_upgrade.xml , except those related to the FAR or XS++ program itself. Risks with flashing custpack or FS are much higher.
