White Palm Centro for ATT on Feb 18th!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: cellular_rep_9

I know I might get bashed or have some non believers becuase I dont have hard evidence in the way of pics and docs but one of my friends is a DM in chicago and showed me a grid that has the white centro releasing on feb 18 and a month later in back

Good news for those of you looking for it......

Posted by: scaredpoet

I think I'd be more enthused about it if Palm had launched a Centro-like device with a linux-based OS, like they've been promising for a long time now.

Posted by: zephxiii

well i hope its 3G, and i hope its Palm OS.... The vodafone one wasn't even HSPA and it was WM...

Posted by: plane

Great news, as I have had on on sprint since it went on sale, great phone, and now I will have one less phone cable to carry. Wonder if att will have the same high discount as sprint, $99, it was/is a steal.

Posted by: smartnewbie

I can verify the Feb 18th date for anyone who still cares about Palm. It's a cool device.

Posted by: Mr. Bond

Is it going to have the PalmOS like the CDMA one?

Posted by: rjl2001

I'll be looking forward to this phone. Hopefully more details will be out soon.

Posted by: Elfreshcuh

Oh yeah cant WAIT

Posted by: cjmedina

i also want to play with this phone but the lack of 3g will probably kill it. whats the diffrences between the 680 and the centro besides the size?

1.3mp camera on the Centro vs 680's VGA is one of the few differences I can think other than preloaded software maybe.

Posted by: SinatrasWorld

My rep in store was studying his centro product description sheet today..not far off

Posted by: cjmedina

according to this http://www.treonauts.com/palm-centr...-comparison.php doesnt look that much diffrent except the 1.3 cam and smaller battery

Posted by: Wide_opeN

So let me get this straight, this phone is considered a downgrade compared to the 750 and people are excited why about it coming out?

Posted by: cjmedina

after see the specs it looks like a 680 in a new housing, i hope they fixed the battery life casue the 680 was crap. i dont know if you can say downgrade, since its not windows but runs palm

You would be better informed if you went to phonescoop and read the reviews of the phone. Its a great phone, and will be an immediate hit, as it was on sprint. It is smaller, lighter, etc, and etc, than the others treo's. The operating system is what it is, and that is more dependant on the user. I too, was reluctantm, until I had used one for about an hour---battery life, with all screen @ full bright, and bluetooth on isn't very good, but small phone equals small battery.

Posted by: zephxiii

heh, Palm OS isn't all that special, so it could be a downgrade (had a 700P to play with for a few days, felt kinda disappointed afterwards). I guess it may be nicer to use, but surely outdated.

I also didn't like the what appeared to be lack of pop3 client. but i had a verizon branded which may have been lamed out.

could do jack with BT either....

Again, go to phonescoop and read what actual users have posted. Thoes from users who have owned other pda's and reflect the ease and simplicity for the average user seem to mirror what I have found. Every handset has cons, and the ones mentioned other than the windows/palm OS ones I agree with for the most part. To me the con about the "cheap" appearance holds more validity, but sorry, personaly I put function above beauty, and recently I notice tht every teenager has a more expensive phone than I do, so I have given up trying to impress people with a flashy phone, as this one certainly won't impresss anyone but it's owner. I had/have a blackjack, and while it has some qood qualities, the menus are from outer space, while the "outdated" palm, for the most part is very straigh forward. It also come with built in streaming for radio, which sold me the first day. I liked it so much, I went to att store a few days after getting the centro, to check out att's versions. While they are a lot better looking; they are monsters (big) compared to the centro, and much lighter--comparing the size/weight specs indicates no big diference, but IMO, a little less of both goes a long way. Another surprise what the great reception and speaker volumn, at least on the sprint system. If ATT prices this unit @ a $100 like sprint did their version
it is going to be a great bargain, except for someone wanting to pay 3-4 times for to impress someone, or for the users needed some special app not available on the palm. Again, read the reviews, try it, then come back and write your on review based on your experience.

Don't expect 3G on this one because PalmOS can't support GSM 3G since UMTS/HSDPA requires an OS that can natively multitask.

Posted by: RF9

I tried to move my wife over to the Treo 750, hated WinMo. So she went back to the 680 (from the 650 before that.) I think she'll be jazzed about the Centro.
Lack of 3G support on PalmOS does suck. But I guess for some people it really doesn't matter at this point. As it is, the browser on the PalmOS is so bad, I don't think 3G is going to do it much good.

Now if only they were launching the pink one instead of the white, I'd be in business. AT&T get with it! chicks like pink phones!

It is an upgrade from the Treo 680 though.

Posted by: Zap2

but how much unlocked from Palm?

Or atleast contract free from AT&T?

Its not a downgrade for AT&T users..the newest Palm OS phone we have is the 680...the Centro is a big step up from that!

Posted by: Wide_opeN

It just seems funny that in every news article, they refer to the Centro as being an entry level pda.

Posted by: plane

It's my understanding the reason they may call it entry, is the very reasonable price. Apparently one of the biggest potential markets for handsets is the one for those who don't yet have a pda type phone. I am no pda expert, but since having gotten the centro, I have read numerous reviews, and at least with the sprint version, the centro appears to be just a smaller and less costly version of the other palms ( with all of their features or problems) . I have not seen a statement contrary to this. Personally, I had interest in a pda type phone prior to centro, but the slight decrease in size and weight made me like it almost instantly, on the other hand, I went to an att store thinking I might get their version of palm, but compared to the centro they were just too big & heavy--so I just passed on getting one.

I know nothing of how the att version will be configured, but the sprint version is without a doubt the best phone I've ever owned, and I started out with a very negative attitude toward it. I somehow doubt the att version will be any less, but I'm only guessing. Hopefully, vzw will also have their own version, and if so, for the first time i'll be able to have the same handset on all my carriers.

Any new info on the AT&T release of the Centro? Date still Feb 18? Any firmer idea on color? I have heard white, and then saw someone thought a black one may be out in March? Do we think they will match the Sprint $99?

Posted by: cjmedina

according to engadget it will be white and 99 hope thats true my wife needs a phone

Posted by: anubis9278

anubis breaks into lab....

2yr $99.99 after $100.00 MIR
1yr $174.99 after $100.00 MIR
no commit $349.99

Edge, PTT, mobitv, telenav capable, mp3...same ole same ole

Posted by: madgalaxy

Green keys?! Not to sure about that...

Posted by: CeluGeek

Looks really nice. If it had Windows Mobile and 3G I'd be all over it. It is a nice step up from Treo 600 series users though.

Posted by: plane

Is release still 18th?

Posted by: zephxiii

I don't get the green buttons...DOES IT WANNA BE AN XBOX360??

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

Several stores already stock them. You can probably find one. Yes, the key pad is green and small.

Posted by: Mr. Bond

Yeah, the green is certainly interesting--shows they're going directly for the consumer market.

Posted by: SChris01

the palm centro sucks well it did for me had one on sprint and hated it.

Posted by: ivwshane

I was not impressed with it. The keypad is way to small (I don't have big hands either).

The web browser (no 3g) seemed decent enough and didn't seem slow like the 680. It comes with p-tunes which worked ok (it doesn't read all of my mp3 album art embedded pictures correctly). The speaker was nice but not that loud (a little softer than a bj).
The ear piece volume wasn't loud but it was quiet (better than the original v3).

I did like the navigation ring, it worked pretty good and was easy to navigate with (as opposed to previous treo rings and better than the bj2's wheel).

In summery:
It's a decent size not too big and not too small (perfect for those that would like the pearl but prefer a qwerty keyboard)
Screen quality was nice but nothing special
The keypad is too small
No 3g
Only supports bluetooth 1.2 (I'm hoping it supports a2dp but I didn't see it in the specs).
Ear piece and speaker volume are clear but have average loudness.
Its the same old palm OS
It support microsd
The navigation ring works well

All in all I see mostly women buying this phone and using it mostly for text messages.

Got my att version today, the menu sytem is somewhat different than the sprint version, but for the money it's gonna be hard to beat. Small & light phones are gonna have small key boards, but this one beats my blackjack (at least for numberical organization) Battery life appear better with gsm version, which was my biggest problem with the sprint one. Tis phone ain't gonna impress anyone but you, and IMO, you can spend a whole lot more and get very, very little more.

Got your pm, sorry for delay, have flu,; it will stream, have not found video yet, dunno. out the door $200 plus tax with a 2 yr extension, less $100 rebate

Posted by: plane

I am finding more no service areas than with my moto 635, or blackjack. I may just have a "bad" unit, dunno, as my sprint version (we have 3) works as good as any of my sanyo's which generally are considered the better or best with that carrier.

Also, they have mess around with the touch screen icons (removed some) which is highly irritating to me. I have only limited experience with pda, blackjack IMO, ok phone, menu not user friendly. The thing that made me like the sprint centro, was I could operate it w/o an instuction book in my hand. Still true with att's version, but shy have they taken off the touchscreend hand up icon, and sprints version had little written labels, for those of us who can't remember what all the little icons are for. I am still looking for the other little preference setttings that seem to either be not there or moved.

The sensitivity thing however, is going to be the more imporant issue, as I was just wanting a good phone with some stuff to play with, not the other way around.

Can I still get the $100 MIR if I'm a current customer?

Posted by: jetfxr

No commitment price is $349.99.

Posted by: experiment626

Why doesn't AT&T's version have 3G?

Posted by: jetfxr

Palm OS and 3G Radios don't play nice.

Posted by: RF9

Palm OS can't do simultaneous voice and data, which is what UMTS/HSPDA does. They can do 3G on Sprint/Verizon because their 3G doesn't support them simultaneously.
This is one of several reasons PalmOS has been "End Of Life" for a very long time and why they're working on a new linux based OS which is way behind schedule.
EOL or not, and despite this limitation, PalmOS is still very good as a smartphone OS, especially for the 'entry level' market. It does just about everything one needs, it's just limited to it's growth potential in comparison to other OS's out there.

Kind of a bummer.

Posted by: jetfxr

Well Put RF9!

Posted by: grandsuke

The Palm Centro from AT&T is available for $99.99 after a two-year
service agreement and a mail-in rebate.

for thoise who may be interested...

Posted by: anubis9278

wait for the black it looks better.

Posted by: 2saints

Just got mine today, the keypad is very small and it is hard to type if you have big/fat fingers. So far it's good, haven't had a chance to play with it much though.

Posted by: jetfxr

Yeah the keyboard is very uncomfortable, coming from a Blackjack and a Curve. My wife has smaller fingers and she says it OK. Not great but OK.

Posted by: Cardiff Giant

Curious if anyone who uses a mac has picked one up. I have a treo 750 which is great but I can't sync it with my mac without buying a $40 program which by most reports is far from great (I had limited luck with the demo). If the centro plays nice with the mac without needing to buy any additional software, I may get it and get rid of my Treo 750. I like WM6 but I am really sick of a lack of mac compatibility. Lack of 3G not a big deal as I use nearly no data. Had my 6682 had a qwerty keyboard I'd have kept that sucker.
