I'm residing in London for a few months and traveling to different cities for work each week. I'm thinking about getting one of those 3G USB modems for my MacBook. Is anyone using those for roaming? Does it work in Japan too? Is your roaming bill reasonable, or outrageous?

I haven't tried this myself, but it should work in Japan, as Softbank mobile uses the same technology as voda and tmo UK. But best ask around for a better answer.
Also, I can ensure you it's going to be very expensive.

The Sony-Ericsson K610i, which is pretty inexpensive, works just like a USB modem, too. It comes with a USB cable and if you install the drivers off the CD, it acts just like a network card when you plug it into the computer. And, of course, it's also a real phone, unlike the USB modems.
